Was looking for a spot for dinner. Read over a few reviews and decide to come. Definitely don't let the outside fool you! The food is all that mattered and they did a great job. Very small facility with about 10 tables. Everything was made fresh as well as they didn't skimp on the food. The portion sizes were big as well as the drinks. Prices are fair and your definitely going to run into a few groups of friends out having a good time. It's definitely a little hidden gem. If I'm ever back in town I'll be back! read more

I was out for a motorcycle ride and started craving bad beer and good tacos. Mile after mile with nothing, and I was starting to get desperate. Then I came across this oasis in the desert. The bright colors of the building in the bars on the window let me know immediately that I was in the right place. I went inside, and the Happy Donkey was about half full, with not a single English word being spoken; more confirmation I was in the right place. I sat at the bar and ordered two tacos and two gorditas. The complimentary chips were warm with homemade salsa. The hot salsa was spicy but not overwhelming. The bartender must've sensed that I was able to handle spicier food and gave me a green sauce with my tacos that was amazing. The chicken tacos were full of meat, but I would say the chicken was a bit overdone. The beef gorditas, on the other hand, deserve their own special spot in heaven. I could've eaten 10 of those, but as I say that I remember I wasn't able to finish the food that was on my plate. The only real downside was it was Sunday and they don't serve alcohol on Sunday. When we arrived, we were taken to a dirty table under a loud tv. The waitress gave us menus with no prices. When I asked for the prices, she guessed at a couple and refused to go and check. After that she didn't come back but a super nice man came and told me the prices and we ordered. It took 47 minutes for chicken fajitas and a cheese quesadilla. No drink refills or other service. Get yourself to the Happy Donkey! Do not let the unassuming exterior turn you away! This place is clean, happy and serves up some pretty fabulous Mexican food. I'm dying to try the soup, which is only served weekends. The shrimp salad was yummy. The Trio was also great. Food is mildly and well spiced - I would not hesitate to try anything on the menu... and will probably do so. I've been here twice, and I'm already a fan. Everything here is homemade - even the tortillas. You can really taste the difference. The staff is friendly, helpful, and knowledgable. In two trips, I've sampled quite a few different dishes (hey, with a family of six, it doesn't take long) - everything I've had so far is excellent. The only drawback is it's a neighborhood location - a little out of the way for most. I think it's worth it though. Good food, good prices, good people. That's a tough combination to beat. Despite the unappealing entrance, the inside is fine and the food is spectacular! True true Mexican. Carne asada with roasted cactus was fantastic. Service was fine - you seat yourself and the waiter is attentive. I saw mostly Hispanic locals here which is a good sign. Authentic Mexican food reasonably priced. When we arrived in the parking lot, my first thought was "big mistake". If I had turned around I would have missed an excellent meal. We had quesadilla, steak and chicken fajitas. I had a vegetarian casedia with beans on the side. My husband had the chicken with vegetables, with nice hot tortillas on the side. He could not finish it all. The exterior is very unassuming however inside is clean and the staff friendly. Unfortunately I was not impressed with the food at qHappy Donkey. We ordered the shrimp quesadilla, which was ok, however for the price I would have expected it to be served with rice and beans (one or the other or both). The Speedy Gonzales from the lunch menu consists of a ground beef taco, rice and a small ground beef burrito with white queso. Being from Texas I found everything to be very bland. If you like very mild mexican food this is the place for you. read more
