Went here for the first time over a month ago. Visit went smoothly, Dr Hansen was helpful. However, they lost my check (because they do not except credit card). They thought I had not paid, called me and looked for it again. Approx. 1 week later it was cashed. 2 weeks after the check cleared, they sent me a bill for the visit. I called several times over the following 2 weeks and left messages each time. No return call. I even stopped by the office during regular hours a and they were not there. I have tried to reschedule another visit for a follow up but they are non responsive. read more

I've known Dr. Hansen since the late 1970s and he is still the most compassionate, intelligent, competent physician I've ever met. I loved his former secretary, I think her name was Kathy and she spoke italian. She was wonderful and so very sweet. Didn't care much about Eva though, she was more rude than nice. read more

Wow awkward. So I call for an appointment, ask if they are taking new patients and the "sweet" woman on the phone replies full-heartedly yes and we can get me in quick. I then tell her my symptoms (I think I have pneumonia) and her tone changes. She puts me on hold for a few moments, returns and informs me they can be of no service to me. They recommend that I go to the hospital (which I've already done mind you and they are charging me up the wazu) but when I tell her I can't afford a hospital, that I just need to get in front of a doctor, she says they are booked full-for at least a week. She then wished me luck. This is why I HATE Western medicine. read more

He's old school. His office looks like it was decorated in 1972. He doesn't take credit cards. He doesn't take HMO's. But he's a very cool, mild mannered, no nonsense, type of guy that I trust. I've been a patient of his for nearly seven years now and he's been helping me turn my unhealhty life around since I've become a type 2 diabetic. He loses one star because of the no credit card policy. read more

I'm a new patient of Dr. Hansen. Unlike so many other physicians I've had in the past, Dr. Hansen's great asset is he totally listens to you, takes furious notes. He's big on preventive medicine and I'm all for that. His assistant, Eva, is a lovely woman and an absolute pro at drawing blood. Not even a pinch when the needle went in! The office decor probably has not been changed in decades, but, I don't visit for spiffy decor. I want a professional who knows his medicine and I believe 110% that Dr. Hansen knows exactly that. read more

I have been visiting Dr Hansen for the last few years for annual check ups. I tend to find he is a thoughtful and gives good advice.

I received an emergency referral to this doctor from my own physician who was out of town. However, as they took several hours to get back with me, I had already made other arrangements to be seen by another doctor who was immediately responsive. Emergency patient care needs immediate response. Bad! read more

I cannot recommend Dr. Jim Hansen more highly. I've always said he deserves 10 stars out of five stars! He is an exemplary credit to the medical profession. I remember another specialist saying to me a couple of years ago, "Oh, Dr. Hansen is your internist?" "Yes, I replied." "Do you realize you have the best internist in San Francisco?" "Well that's good to know, I said." Dr. Jim Hansen has a unique way of transferring his mid-west values into the treatment of his patients with incredible sincerity, excellent bedside manners, compassion, and understanding~all with a sense of humor. He is able to most effectively diagnose medical problems (I've had my share of unique ones), be proactive, suggest the best treatment while using the most conservative approach. He is a true thinker, always taking in the "whole" picture of the patient into consideration and presenting the best options in the most professional manner. read more

Hansen James P, MD - Oh, it's just me, Yvonne Fortier holding the jar of hydrating lotion I use for my skin. - Internal Medicine Near Me - San Francisco, California

Dr James Hansen and his staff, were extremely friendly and helpful. Funny Doctor with good humor really makes the visits go by quickly. Good location for people in the Marina/Nob HIll area! read more

Jeez, I hate to be this person reviewing a medical provider with fewer than 5 stars, because they have a very hard job; but honestly this place is so out of date it's bizarre. They do not have a credit card machine (in 2017) so I can't use my medical HSA card; which was the whole reason I selected this provider. And honestly the front desk woman was so unpleasant it has stuck out in my mind like crazy. From the first time I went in, to when I called to ask about the bill (because the random person who handled billing didn't have a voicemail set up) she was so unpleasant, and almost condescending. Again, I really like to keep this stuff off yelp, because generally this is a haven for jerks, but I would have been remiss not to say a word! If you are looking for a nice experience when you have a HEALTH ISSUE (already stressful), this is not the place! read more

I like Dr. Hansen. He is knowledgeable and kind. He's been my primary care physician since the late 90's. If you forget to bring cash, there's an ATM downstairs. I've used it more than once. read more

I have been a patient of Dr Hansen for more than 25 years. I became a patient when I lived near his Union St office years ago and have remained since I moved to Marin approximately 25 years ago. I remain a patient even though I now commute from San Rafael because Dr Hansen is the best doctor I have ever had. I am 58 years old and I have had innumerable occasions when I needed Dr Hansen's advice, counsel, and treatment. I could go into details, but there are too many of them. But knowledge, compassion, bedside manner, and quality are among the main reasons Dr Hansen will always be my doctor. I recommend him without reservation. Good luck! read more

This is by far the worst experience I've ever had with a doctor. I had requested a refill for my heartburn prescription and the doctor refused to call in a refill order only because I had not seen him for a year. Seriously?!! Who doesn't call in a heartburn prescription just because he's not making money from it! Then I called to request my medical records be mailed to me... after leaving several voicemails, the receptionist finally called me back a few days later and told me that they will mail a copy of my records to me for a $25 charge. I have NEVER been charged for this with any other doctor's office. These people are just out to make a buck. Worst experience ever! read more

A highly intelligent and personable physician. I like the fact that I am given quality skilled professionals whenever a referral's necessary. read more

Dr Hansen has been my primary care physician since the late 1980s, except when I lived away from San Francisco. They always manage to get me an appointment when I need to see him and Dr Hansen is the only doctor I have that does not book three patients at the same time and make me wait. My doctors in Los Angeles were terribly disrespectful of my time. Dr. Hansen is just the opposite. If your appointment is at 2:30, he sees you at 2:30 and isn't bouncing around three different treatment rooms. He is an old style general practitioner, yet he is fully up to date in his medical knowledge. He listens and works his care around my life, rather than insisting on things that are not practical for me. I trust him and I like him. He is a good person and a professional medical care provider. When I have kids I will trust their care to him. read more

I have been going to Dr. Hansen since 1991. He is highly competent & a good person. Further, his assistant Eva is incredible! My wife has also been seeing him for many years, as well as my daughter. He is the go-to doctor. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. James Hansen for many years. My mom had been a patient of his as well for many, many years. She had only wonderful things to say about him. As for myself, I feel that he is extremely knowledgeable about what he does and I have the utmost respect for him. He is very thorough in his overall approach in addressing my medical needs. I drive 3 hours from the Sacramento, CA area to see him. That should speak for itself. As far as the different things that people have said regarding the office atmosphere, etc., is his personal taste and should not reflect what he does as a professional doctor. read more

Minus one star for the Lab Tech/Receptionist lady with crosses and tons of pictures of Jesus and Mary in the room in which she takes your blood. She's good at what she does but she's cold as ice (figuratively) and wears 6 inch heals and caked on doll-mascara ... in a doctor's office? Come on. I seriously thought I was on the verge of having an oncoming heart attack, so I called another office where I found out BOTH doctors were soon to go on vacation until late October and that they were totally booked prior to. The receptionist, sensing my anxiety, referred me to Dr. Hansen. They were able to fit me in later that week and I am glad I came here. Dr. Hansen, like previous said, has excellent bedside manner and is really easy to talk to. After leaving his office, i already felt better. You can tell he really knows his shit -- when you enter the office there's a plaque that he was awarded that reads "San Francisco's Top 500 Doctors." ...Yeah, I know 500 is a lot, but still, I really believe it after my experience with him. Oh, did I mention he's totally hot? I recommend! read more

I was informed by Safeway pharmacy that Dr. Hansen had refused to refill my thyroid medication unless I came in for a physical. I had my gastro doctor forward a full blood panel that was done in august which showed my thyroid levels to be unchanged, which they have been for some time. I then had an extremely unpleasant conversation with Eva, his assistant who told me that thyroid medication needs to be adjusted every now and then. I understand that but I have been feeling fine and fiercely resent being blackmailed over my medication. If thyroid medication needs adjusting I don't think it is in the patient's best interest to adjust it to zero. Obviously, Dr. Hansen does not care about my health or he wouldn't behave in this reprehensible manner. If I needed to see him to have my meds adjusted I should have been called directly from his office and not been informed by Safeway. I was very upset talking with Eva but instead of hearing me out she kept interrupting me. Finally, she told me she would talk with the doctor and get back to me and then hung up on me. I have not received a return call. Abruptly stopping thyroid medication has serious health consequences but this bully of a doctor doesn't care. I called my insurance company and they agreed that his behavior is unethical. This is no way to treat another human being much less a patient. Dr. Hansen has deliberately and callously put my health at serious risk. What true physician does that? read more

I liked Dr Hansen but after dealing with his witch like nurse/admin I was so turned off I found another doctor. She seems to dominate the practice & has " I'm doing you a favor" attitude which felt like patient combat to me. Better size her up if you want customer friendly patient service! read more

Dr. Hansen is what anyone should want in a primary physician: a knowledgeable, sincere, respectful, forthright, honest, responsive, humane professional. I'm planning an annual exam shortly. That I would drive 2.5 hours for an appointment attests to my high regard for him. His fees are reasonable and unpadded. I love that he does not take credit cards. An old school doc whose uncluttered, simple office reflects his focus on delivery, not appearance. read more

Dr, Hansen has been my treating primary care physician for over 15 years and I have NEVER been disappointed with him. He has a very gentle touch and an excellent bedside manner, More, I always feel better leaving his office than I did going in. He is that rare find - - a true healer. He aways has time for me. He has seen me through some really rocky times and I have always been gratefull that he is my doctor. I had a wonderful physician for almost 20 years however he retired. I doctor shopped for five years before finding Dr. Hansen. I'm so glad I didn't settle for less. Rather than hazard a guess (as I know some doctors do rather than appear ignorant), Dr. Hansen will admit that he does not know and refer you to a specialist. It doesn't hurt that he is a very good looking man who dresses very fashionably, always looking like he stepped down from the pages of GQ. You want a professional who takes pride in his appearence without being vain! I have recommended him to all my friends and those who have been treated by him have not been disappointed. I wish all physicians were more like Dr. Hansen. read more
