Similarly, being 'out on an island' renting commercial space within earshot of contractors, accounting offices, chiropractic, etc - would inevitably result in me having to accommodate, rearrange schedules, set-up tear-down my gear, compromising... I don't feel alone and out numbered, but I also feel understood and respected when I and my art need some distance. I moved in February 1st, excited to start my journey back to music…read more I knew I was going to miss a couple weeks, and ended up moving in late on February. The first night, I already could tell this was a waste of money. I was sandwiched between two loud producers, one of which a non-black rapper constantly saying the n word in his music. He also said it outside in the hall. (A white man) I am a lifelong musician, loud rehearsal neighbors aren't new to me- but what bothers me is that this studio is not actually a studio. They are office buildings. There is absolutely NO noise isolation and to top that off, the door I had was broken. After 5 min of my walls rumbling from both sides with absolutely no insulation to soften the blow, so loud my head was throbbing - I realized the lockout owners were likely cash grabbers with no passion for sound. Very different from Sac Rehearsal and the other one off El Camino where you at least get SOME LEVEL of isolation and professional attempts at noise reduction. On top of that- I was offered a tour with a measly $100 off my next room selection. When I attempted to reschedule the tour, their only available hours to do so were 10A-2:45P, Mon-Fri, which as you might expect - will not work for 90% of people who can afford rehearsal studios. When I finally was able to schedule a time, they canceled for a family emergency and rebooked for Monday the 24th, leaving me a measly 7 days of a potential rehearsal experience. When I brought this to their attention, they nastily retorted, "well you've had access to the space the whole time!" A space with no noise isolation that is entirely impossible to think in, let alone rehearse in. Save your money- even if you're a mile away like I am, it's better to go to House of Hits. Even Sac Rehearsal. The only benefit of this place is the "safe" location- but it's really built with no regards to musicians and the customer service is built equally as shitty.

The i-house has a great location in Davis across from the University and has plenty of free parking. It's located next to a nice neighborhood and has parks and plenty of shaded tree-lined streets for a quick walk to get the creative juices flowing. Davis Co-Working has big desks and comfortable chairs, with nice lighting, lots of electrical plugs, coffee and tea, all in a nicely decorated and comfortable environment. It has a nice-sized conference room and clean bathrooms. The wi-fi is top notch! I have used the facility for several years and cannot recommend it highly enough. I would run into the owner once in a while and she is very friendly. Lastly, the price is very reasonable, dare I even say a bargain for the chance to work in such a great environment.

I ran across Davis Co-Working and checked it out. I liked what I saw, and I have been a delighted member ever since. What do I like about it, gentle reader? Well, pull up a chair, and I'll tell you. For starters, the sign-up process couldn't be more straightforward; you just go to their website, create an account, select a package, enter your payment info, and voila, within a few hours, you get a welcome message and instructions on accessing the site. The Owner, Do, is always happy to answer questions and has been very quick to respond to any questions or concerns. As for the site, I work at the International House site, and I really like the layout. It's in the lower section of the house, but there is still plenty of natural light from the windows. The space is clean and comfortable, with lots of seating and tables. They have a large conference room that can be used ad hoc or scheduled. Amenities include coffee and tea, a refrigerator for your lunch, fast Wi-Fi, and even a printer. The facility has several clean and well-stocked restrooms and is just a few blocks from plenty of restaurants and markets. I have met many friendly people here at Davis Co-Working who are students, project managers, software developers, and more. They have all been very polite and professional, and we share the space nicely. If you are looking for a place to work 24/7 for a reasonable price, with excellent service, then I would run, not walk, to their website and join today. Your only regret will be not having signed up sooner.

Today was a special day as we are celebrating her birthday weekend. This was our first stop of her celebration. For some reason we weren't patient enough or the elevator was out of service. We took the stairs so it wasn't an issue. I just have concerns with her walking up stairs in her advanced age. She was a trooper. My favorite exhibits were on the 2nd floor. There is a new pink room that we got to explore. Either they use opened it up for public viewing or we just missed it every time we've gone. It was a very fun room to experience. I also loved the paper cuts on the first and 2nd floor. So intricate. I love that this Galley is in the heart of Davis and is walking distance from a free parking lot and lots of restaurants. We scored on the free parking and found a 3 hours spot that we didn't' have to parallel park for. The nice thing about Davis there are a lot of art installations. So you aren't just limited to one gallery, you can enjoy art all around the city.

This gallery is right at the corner of 1st and E street, just after that dip in the road off the…read morefreeway in DTDavis. It's in an old house structure 3 stories high or more. Inside it is an Art Gallery, and also a multipurpose activity/community space. Through the front door, which is located at the corner of 1st and E streets past some large art sculptures, is a book store of published art books, and to the left corner is a info/cashier counter and person. Past that opens up to a large multistory atrium area, filled with art, but also a couple of tables with 4-5 chairs each. In the hot Davis summers, this is a cool place to hang out, literally, as there is OPAC available for you (Other People's AC), and WiFi! Currently the artist featured on this floor is Mark Bullwinkle, an American artist with SF Bay Area roots and metal quirky sculpture installations, particularly in Emeryville and Berkeley, that he created with a blowtorch. Up the stairs or elevator to floor 2, there is a study/lounge that over looks the atrium below, with other artists' work in the nooks and crannies around the staircase and little rooms. The 3rd floor is a full art floor, with mostly ceramic sculptures from various artists. It is free to enter. I did an event here a year ago, a UC Davis student's birthday party with entertainment in the atrium space. And more recently I came here with 2 friends to chill in the OPAC and tables/chairs in the 1st floor Atrium before heading on to dinner on a lazy Sunday afternoon road trip.

The Davis art center offers a variety of eclectic cultural arts classes. For instance the first…read morestudio to the left of the entrance is where three-dimensional art and ceramics class are held. Although I don't take 3-dim art classes here it looks like it would be rewarding to create beautiful mosaics from huge chunks of clay and chipped glass while listening to cool retro background music. There are dramatics classes who rehearse outside behind the stage for the "theatre in the park" productions. There are music classes, singing classes, and a variety of cultural dance classes. As an Added bonus... All DAC dance studio floors are solid tongue and groove wood. Did I mention that wood dance floors are almost nonexistent in Northern California? With that said its the floors that drew me to the Davis art center, as any respectable rhythm tapper would. As a community non profit organization taking classes at the DAC should not burn a hole in your octet book. Plus 1 star for that. Enrollment fees & tuition fees are nominal compared to a private studio plus you automatically become a member of the DAC after enrolling in a class. You should really check this place and take a class for fun. Go ahead and dust off that old Yamaha instrument in the back of your closet...you won't regret it. After all cultural arts classes give your mind an opportunity to create while making new friends from the community.

I brought my Kambala djembe and jammed until the sun set. Djembe masters like Mamadu are rare these days and I was fortunate enough to have networked with him through the Sacramento drum circle rhythm community. There are people of all ages and backgrounds who share a collective interest in rhythm and the origins of music. The djembe is the roots! I will be back!
