There was little communication between us and the relationship we did have was taken for granted. Within 6 months of therapy with Brent, my problem with them was solved. First, Brent had me enumerate the stresses associated with the roles I had with these people. Then we developed a plan of action to reduce these stressors. One assignment was to list pros & cons of asserting myself. An example was the erosion of my relationship with my spouse caused by my rumination on the problem. I was also worried about the pressure getting to me and having an outburst of emotion with these relatives which would greatly damage our relationship. The pros, which I learned from listing my values and how I demonstrated them, helped to justify my faith in myself, and reduced the tension I felt when I talked to them to set boundaries. All in all, my relationship became a win-win between my family and myself with Brent giving me guidance and support to achieve my goal.
