In 1987, when my husband and I arrived in the area, the previous grocery store, standing in the…read moresame location but under a different name and having different owners, actually displayed rotting produce. I just couldn't bring myself to shop there, so I changed to a Hannaford's in Bangor. The original building burned down due to sheer recklessness. Blue Hill peninsula was left without a supermarket, so, in step the Lawrence family. About a year later they had built a new structure in the same place, the one that stands today. TradeWinds selection and quality of food is pretty darned good. The store is lovely, the staff are lovely, and the food quality is very good. TradeWinds may be THE best grocery store/supermarket that I've ever experienced. The owners and the employees are top notch, always very helpful and friendly. The Lawrence family prioritize community, they offer locally grown or made choices, they offer a Maine food section, and they've made this store a shining example of what is possible. Employees need daycare, provided. Employees and others need an exercise spot, provided. Need less expensive fuel for your vehicle, provided. Need a more community oriented pharmacy, they bring in Community Pharmacy! I've never witnessed such active community support in my life! Now to the difficult part. After more than two decades ownership is transitioning. Hannaford, the Maine distributor, which supplies TradeWinds, is the new owner. Hannaford's has been a good company as far as I know. But, like most changes, this is a hard for many of us. Will they continue to offer the unique products that TradeWinds has all these years? Will they keep the lower, more reasonable prices for groceries and fuel that the Lawrence family offered us? Will they allow Community Pharmacy to remain? Will the very cool Beer Cave stay, continuing to offer the amazing Maine and small brew company selections? Will the community awareness and cancer fundraising continue? I hope the answer will be a resounding YES, but we have to wait and see. Even though it's a difficult phase, I have to say thank you to the Lawrences and Hannaford, I'm glad the store has a new Maine-based owner with a decent track record. Thank you Chuck and Belinda Lawrence for all you have given us folks on the Blue Hill Peninsula over these many years! You are very appreciated. I hope you enjoy a well deserved retirement. Thank you also to the lovely staff, I hope the transition goes well for you. I'll see you soon. I love you all for who you are and what you do. THANK YOU!

The employees are consistently unfriendly and offer no service…read more We are locals, live here full-time and try to avoid this market -- it's actually very sad that the management does not really seem to put effort into providing quality service to year round residents.

This store has everything you can think of that you would need in a jiff! And it's great because…read morethey are open until 9pm. They also have great prices on everything. A fantastic store with a great village-feeling environment. There is one staff member there that is the rudest most miserable person ever. I have never done anything but say thank you or ask how her day is. Every time I ask she doesn't even look at me and says the total. She always is frowning and refuses to make eye contact or answer whenever I ask her anything. I see other people having the same problem. I don't know why she is there. She acts incredibly bored and is such a miserable presence we actually get bummed out going in there when she is there. Just the one. All the other staff members are super.

I'm a transgender woman. I was subjected to horrible transphobic abuse by a cashier here. If you're…read morequeer, don't shop here because you won't be welcome. Tradewinds up the hill was closed early due to staffing during the COVID pandemic, we were desperate to buy some stuff for dinner, so we came here instead. We were waiting in line and the lady working there (Diane) called for backup (I think the name was "Stafford?"). A man with a buzzcut and tattoos came out of the kitchen area (with no mask, which is required by law right now!) and started checking us out. He keeps staring at me over and over, and finally he starts antagonizing me to my face about how I look exactly like Marilyn Manson. He keeps at it through the whole checkout process. "You know, back when he used to dress up like a woman", he says. I'm absolutely appalled, but I also know that in a mom and pop place like M&H there are probably going to be zero repercussions for this guy. I also know that the kind of people who generally shop at M&H who *aren't* high school students probably don't use the Internet, so to some extent I may be shouting into a void here. But let it be known that Merrill and Hinckley has staff who antagonize queer people. Blue Hill always felt like it was a few decades behind, and I see nothing has changed.

One of the best breakfast/cafe spots we have been to…read more Breakfast Biscuit - 9.8 The biscuit alone was perfect. It was moist, buttery, soft with a great exterior. The biscuit and cut in half and placed on the griddle. The bacon here was really good and cooked well, as was the egg. I added homemade strawberry jam to my biscuit which was also great and contrasted nicely with the bacon. One of, if not the best biscuit I have ever had. Bagel - 8.8 The bagel was really good however, smaller than most. The bagel was really fresh and had a nice chew to it. We think the cream cheese may have even better than the bagel. The cream cheese was delicious, which we could have it at home. We stopped in from during our drive from Bar Harbor, Maine to Portland, Maine. It wasn't out of the way for us and we planned to stop here while planning our trip. After eating here though, even if it was out of the way, it would have been worth it. If you're within 30-45 minutes from this place, go! Even if it is out of your way. The biscuit sandwich is worth it. We had to order a second biscuit and ate it before hitting the road. We wish we could have tried some of their lunch items, mainly the reuben because it looks amazing. The service and staff here were very friendly and down to earth.
