The In Between - Trio of House Made Dips 3/5

My husband and I really enjoyed our Saturday night visit to The In Between in Port Townsend. While…read moreit's billed as a speakeasy, there is no gimmicky password or secret door, which is honestly a relief. To get to The In Between, you simply go through the main entrance to the Sirens Pub building, but instead of heading into the pub go up one flight of stairs. We checked in at the bar and seated ourselves, and then were quickly greeted with menus and water. We very much got the sense that while the folks here take cocktails very seriously, they don't take themselves overly seriously. There's no unnecessary pretense, and no need to be an expert to enjoy your time here. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, which made us feel so at ease. That plus the comfortable space, dim lighting, and perfect noise level (not eerily quiet, but no so loud that you couldn't have a conversation with the person in front of you) made for a lovely experience. We each nursed a delicious drink -- a mezcal cocktail for me and a straight up spirit for him (we enjoyed that they feature local producers!) -- while enjoying each other's company and the excellent atmosphere here. What more could you ask for?

And the copper straw for that drink suited it perfectly, really brought out the ice cream coldness in each sip. Alas this wasn't my drink, but my wife's. I had the sotol cocktail and that was smoky and interesting too. Vibes were immaculate here for the weekend night I went. The gold and art deco furnishing with the varied lighting and green-gold wallpaper, along with the unexpectedly detailed wood carvings under the bar were great. Plus the relaxed but bassy music selection added to the lounge experience. Very happy, hope I can return and order the pistachio drink for myself. Fast service, no complaints.

Wow. Amazing. We were on a romantic getaway to Victoria this summer and decided to stop by Bodega…read morefor lunch. We got there when it opened and the few people working that day just made the experience one to remember. Sat at the bar and had a few spectacular cocktails while sampling many meats and cheeses on their charcuterie board. Bread was perfect... ordered a refill. Everything we tried was perfect so I need to go back and try the rest of the menu. Best meal of our trip to BC.

I should start with a disclaimer - tapas is one of my absolute favorite meals, and I didn't care…read morefor some of my dishes here. HOWEVER. I also live in Washington DC (one of my favorite tapas places there is funnilly also called Bodega) and it is very possible tapas here is different from what I am used to. I haven't had tapas elsewhere in Victoria or anywhere else in Canada. I also wonder if I would have preferred its sister restaurant next door. I asked the hostess what the difference was and she said the one next door was more of a sit down family restaurant. And, to that effect, all of the indoor tables at Bodega were high tops, which I find uncomfortable, so we had to sit on the patio. The ceviche here is incredible. A standout. I have had ceviche in many places over many years and in many countries and types of restaurants, including places that just do ceviche. This may be my favorite ceviche ever. The next most impressive dish we had was a squash with pepitas and other toppings. I asked what kind of squash it was and they said they didn't know for sure because it comes from the chef's mother's farm so it can rotate. On the one hand I find this incredibly charming. On the other hand, I asked because I have dietary restrictions and cannot digest patty pan squash. They assured me it wasn't that, but their inability to tell me exactly what it was didn't engender confidence. Luckily, chatgpt was able to identify it from a photo and it was one that I know is safe for me. We ordered gambas al ajillo, which is normally one of my favorites, and I found it underwhelming. Just not very flavorful. Also I am used to it coming out in a ceramic baking dish or cast iron but this was just in a bowl which seemed odd and may contribute to why I found it less flavorful. Patatas Bravas were solid but also hard to mess up. My husband got some meat items that I didn't eat as a pescatarian but he enjoyed them. And my least favorite dish was a dish featuring albacore tuna, egg and tapenade. I normally love all three of these things and was intrigued by the fact that it was albacore vs ahi or yellow fin or some other fancier type. I ended up finding the tuna dry and tough and the olive tapenade and hard boiled egg offered a lot of the exact same types of flavors and it just wasn't a very pleasant dish to eat in my opinion. Other people might love this. I dunno. I also found service here a little chilly. This is a hard thing for me to rate because I am aware that there are significant cultural differences between Canada and the US and servers in the US are unusually effusive and attentive, in extreme cases to a point of being overbearing, whereas in Canada servers may prioritize not interrupting or getting in the way over being chatty. But even compared to other restaurants we visited in Victoria this felt a little frosty, especially when it came to my dietary restrictions. I very much got a vibe from multiple people that it was weird for me to ask questions about what was in the food or about the restaurant. All in all this wasn't bad. Other people seemed to be enjoying themselves. I think it is a very distinctive style and ambiance and it is going to be a match for some customers and not others, but I personally prefer something with warmer ambiance and more accessible dishes.

Amazing. Unforgettable. Delicious…read more We came to celebrate a birthday. The setting was intimate and felt high scale but humble and comfortable not stuffy. Perfect for date night or dinner. I can see us coming for drinks and a pizza at the bar, for celebrating milestones or coming with friends for out of town. I got an espresso martini and it was perfection. It was ice cold with the right amount of sweetness. Second drink I got was their pina colada and it was to die for. Their coconut cream is chef's kiss. We got the focaccia bread and burrata for appetizers and boy were we not disappointed. The focaccia was crispy and came with two toppings a butter and oil. The burrata was dream worthy and perfectly seasoned. Everything complimented each other. My wife got the cheese pizza and it's probably the best pizza we have ever had. The sauce was refreshing and the cheese creamy. There was some sort of crumb or topping that gave it a little extra crunch that we liked a lot. I got the surf and turf. It was as tasty as it was beautiful. The steak was cooked perfectly and the lobster tail was a gracious size. They gave me three lobster dumplings that were a gracious size. There are so many other items on the menu that we can't wait to try. Next time we will make a reservation just to be courteous.

Lots of items to choose from on the menu, but not overwhelming. We shared a mozzarella pizza, tavern burger, and ceasar salad. Hubs had a beer. Pizza crust was pretty burnt (personally I like that but hubs did not), otherwise flavors were great!!! Burger was huge (2 patties), however I wasnt a fan of the sweet ketchup sauce they used. Fries were fresh and hot, but pretty salty. Same with the dressing on the salad. Croutons were freshly made and warm! For the hype this place gets I was expecting more, just not sure what. The place was packed, clearly people enjoy it here. Reservations for a weekend definitly need to be booked out 2 weeks in advance for a decent time. Bar seating is first come first serve which is lovely. Pretty much elevated bar food- Id like to try more of the apps and pizzas next time, or see the new menu. Our bartender was meh... didnt seem thrilled to be serving us and didnt have any opinions/recommendations for us which was a BIG turn off. The only reason Im giving 4 stars. Id come again, or look into it for a hosting a larger event. Its worth trying, especially with a rotating menu, but I wouldn't make it my "go to" spot. My burger pic was blurry so I cant post it, but its a big guy! Also prices are pretty reasonable for downtown Tacoma- we could easily spend this much elsewhere... so that was a plus!

The staff are all very friendly and welcoming, and Anita in particular was awesome. We asked for recommendations and Anita recommended the Seafood Chowder to start which was to die for!!! Best one my Gf and I have ever had anywhere.. For the main dishes we had the Rack of Lamb, and the Beef Bourguignon and both very delicious and very tender. The owner Roxanne and Stephan came by and mingled with everyone and I have to say are incredible hosts and have done an amazing job with the place and the staff. Did I mention they have a 3-Michelin Star Chef?!! We will definitely be back and highly recommend this place to any and everyone to stay, relax, enjoy great dining and unwind. Michael and Teresa:)

For dessert, they had a special Japanese style cheesecake which was light and fluffy and accompanied with ice cream, a sprinkle of nuts, and edible flowers. Great friendly service as well!
