Today was my second appointment with Landon at Handsome Hawaii. He cut his teeth at Mojo; it seems many quality barbers have that Mojo connection. They opened sometime last year on S. King St...right after Sheridan St. and directly across from Easy Music Center...it's easy to find. Parking may not be so quick to procure; there are metered street parking stalls but I just walk to their location, as I don't live too far away. Landon is quick, efficient, and personable. My second cut with him and the second time we conversed about the NFL and UH football - he mentioned that there was player dissension on the team due to former HC Graham back in late December. He is a die-hard Saints fan and one day I'll roast him on it when I get to know him better. Interior was painted by an artist from the LA area, if I recall correctly. Handsome is a clean, minimalist shop. They have one big screen TV - pretty sure it is just one. There are three chairs but I've only ever seen one other barber. I signed up with their text messaging and got a $5 coupon which I used this morning. Handsome's standard haircut is $45. read more

I'm into "roll the dice" haircuts. I like to go to a new place with 3 months of hair growth, never having been there before, getting a barber I've never had, and then tell them, do whatever you think is best based on my hair type and face. All I ask is I want it shorter and not skin tight anywhere. I made the reservation online with a barber named Landon, which was new for me, but I liked that. I was able to do it late at night when the shop wasn't open too which for a busy guy like me was ideal. I told him my stipulations, and he turned around the chair so I couldn't see what was going on. I got to watch Guy Fieri for a bit and listen to some cool tunes. 40 min later, he spun me around, and presented me with a fantastic hair cut. He rec'd that I go shorter next time, and I would definitely try that. It's great to find a barber you have faith in like that. He did me right stylewise too. I never know what to ask for when I go in to get my hair cut. I normally point at the wall at some poster and get some crappy haircut. Not this time. I'm pleased and will be coming back. Located on King St. Next to Golden Pork ramen shop, Handsome is a cozy, trendy shop for those who like to looks stylish in town. I think it's a perfect mix of the modern haircut experience; clean lines, tattoo inspired logo, large light rings, and a flat screen streaming whichever sporting event is hot at the moment. And local shop culture; young, friendly barbers & stylists, 90s & 00s hip hop and chill vibes. As always it's best to make an appointment, as I'm not sure if I've ever seen a walk-in, but I'm certain you can on certain days. Pricing is on par with other shops on island, $40 for haircut only. I know on Oahu the price may seem astronomical, but for the location and caliber of talent I think it's fair. I always get a fresh cut from Travis and good conversation. As a woman I've never felt uneasy here and that's a plus. Some places get nervous when a woman comes in for a haircut which is odd to me, but the team here are professionals that care about making you look good, period! Great haircuts by Melfredo. Just very disappointed that I made an appointment weeks in advance and got the second class treatment of having a buddy of his take my time slot at my last visit. Was he a walk-in? Then your appointment system is useless! In fact, I was there 15 minutes early. When it was time, he looked me straight in the eyes and wouldn't acknowledge me that there would be a delay. Double-booked? If I was simply acknowledged, it would've been dandy and I'd be like, "bro, you do you; it's all good." But it never happened. Whatever. I should've just walked out, but I'm not a dick. I was on my lunch break... so, it's lost wages for you, if you are being paid hourly. Probably numb to the fact, being fee-for-service. He took half an hour on that guy who took my spot, and rushed thru mines. If I wanted a rushed haircut, which normally took 45 mins to an hour (I always appreciated the attention to details), I could've walked over to A's next door and saved money while I was at it. Would I return? What happened to me was straight up disrespect, and would be for anyone else, loyal patron or first time. Melfredo has the skills, certainly. And I recommended him to my friends for his talents, assuredly. Otherwise, my patronage has been terminated. The market is saturated with talent and many price points, so... no one's at a real loss. read more

When it comes to a great men's haircut, it's difficult to find someone else on this island with the expertise as Channing does. Handsome Hawaii is Channing's new shop. Prior, Channing used to work at Mojo so you know he's very skilled. Since I was going to a wedding, I figured I would get it done fancy and Channing had an opening via online. Channing did a great job on my cut as I left it to him to decide what I should get done. He even managed my crazy whorl that I The shop is located on South King Street next to Golden Pork. Giving 5-stars to this barbershop is way too easy. They're located across the street from Tipsy Pig and have plenty of street parking. I called for a last minute cut and sure enough they picked up the phone on the first call and I got an appointment set up same day. I arrived a few minutes early and was greeted upon entering the shop. It's clean, organized and professional. My barber Melfredo Cruz did an amazing job! Another older review so this was from 2019 so not sure how things have changed. I will not put names of people I don't review good because people have off-days but this review is for Andrew. He made my hair better than what I thought I wanted. This guy knows what he's doing, courteous, professional and real easy to talk to, smart guy, far easier to talk to then some of the other younger barbers I'd been to the past at other shops, time went by quick with him. What I didn't like was the street parking situation which I would not to go during morning and afternoon rush hour. The music and general noise level was a little too loud for me but I can see real young guys liking this spot. I'd come back again for Andrew except my work is closer to some of the other shops. So let me start off with it's rare I find a barber I like and like many other reviewers on here have gone through the gambit of barbers on Oahu. So first off let me say I've been here a couple times now so it's good enough that it gets repeat business and I will go again in the future. The chairs are comfortable, you don't have to wait if you actually show up at your appointment time, staff is personable, they actually have parking, hours are good, I like the taco joint next door, and never been (overly) disappointed with my haircut. That being said what cost them a star was two things: (1) I really hate inconsistency in quality between different staff, i.e. I'm going to "Handsome Hawaii", not "John Smith, Barber". I've had four different barbers and the quality of their worked was widely divergent to the point I might as well went to Supercuts for one of them (and saved $60) while another I would put among the top two cuts I have had in my entire life. Yes I know I can book an appointment with a specific person, I shouldn't have to. (2) I really hate barbers that refuse to take ownership of their craft. Like when they ask "how do you want it cut" and I say "I don't, whatever you think will look good on me" I shouldn't get the safe inferior standard fair, i.e. the adult equivalent of a kids bowl or buzz cut. You went to school to learn to cut hair, you cut hair for a living, etc you know better than I do what is currently fashionable, what sort of cut looks good on different head shapes, body types, hair attributes, ethnicity, occupation, etc. When I hire a plumber to fix my toilet I'm not going to tell the man how to do his job as I trust his expertise on the matter. When I hire you to cut my hair, and I communicate to you I have no preference on style, I shouldn't have to tell you how to do your job. You are the expert, not me and that expertise is what I'm paying top dollar for. Mojo suffered from both these problems and it's why I quit going after a couple visits, hopefully Handsome Hawaii isn't hoping to emulate them. Regardless would (and will) go again as definitely better than my last barber. Will the last the test of time, I don't know. read more
