Handshake Speakeasy is worth the hype! I managed to snag a Friday night reservation in the basement room. The interior was dimly lit and moody, and the staff would yell a welcome every time patrons entered the space. They also did the same once people started leaving. For my first drink, I chose the Mexi-Thai. Handshake is known for their clarified cocktails and I was shocked by how complex the flavors were in this clear beverage. It was almost savory with makrut lime coconut, tomato, and basil oil. For my second drink, I chose the Banana Split. This one was much sweeter with rum, banana, and a blend of sherries. It came topped with a chocolate lego filled with banana ganache, which was insanely decadent and tasty. Our reservation was limited to 90 minutes, which was enough time for me. Hard to see why this has been getting top speakeasy when I feel I've been to better... Pretty easy to find - it's in a hotel and there is sure to be a super long line waiting, so make sure you check in with one of the waitstaff especially if you haven't booked a reservation. Although our group did not book ahead, we got there right as they opened and only had to wait about 30 min to get seated - but it was also a Monday so maybe that had something to do with it... Aside from the entrance being anticlimactic compared to the bars I have been to, I think the drinks were quite delicious. I got the Earl Grey and the Once Upon in Oaxaca. The first one was honestly my favorite. It was such a refreshing drink that was a really fun take on Earl Grey tea. I really liked the lemongrass straw as well. Drinking out of the straw vs drinking the drink directly made a huge difference in flavor, which I thought was particularly unique. The Once Upon in Oaxaca was slightly smoky and definitely a more liquor forward drink. Perfect for a second cocktail. I would have liked it to be just a tad more smoky with a thicker mouthfeel. Honestly, I totally understand the hype! You definitely need to make a reservation because it gets booked up QUICK. Reservations open 2 weeks in advance so make it as soon as they open! I didn't realize this, but Handshake is in the lobby of a hotel. Check-in was smooth. There was a hostess that greeted us at the hotel entrance and we were escorted inside to our table. The ambiance was very dark and moody to resemble how it felt during the prohibition era. We had 2 servers and both were so fun and playful! On to the drinks. They were delish! I ordered the Thai-inspired drink and my friend ordered the olive oil martini. Both were great and totally inspired me to make more savory cocktails! Now something to note...they serve you a bowl of trailmix when you sit down. There are roasted grasshoppers in this trailmix! It was certainly a shocker, so just be aware of that as you're munching. Great conversation starter for sure, haha! You get 90 minutes before you're booted from your table which I felt was plenty of time to enjoy. I get it. I am not usually one to come to places blown up on social media however Handshake is WELL worth it. I think I can say these were the best cocktails I have ever had. I had both the Peanut Butter and Jelly and the Banana Split and both were wildly good. I have never had cocktails like these before and they were worth every penny. I thought this was a really cool bar and would definitely go back. My brother and I had reservations and arrived on time, we had to wait for a bit to be taken down to the bar upon our arrival. When you walk inside the bar, the staff shouts a greeting to you as you enter a dimly lit, small, but vibey bar. We ordered a couple of drinks and were provided complimentary spiced nuts with toasted crickets which were good. My first drink (don't recall the name) was not good, I did not send it back, but our server saw me screw my face up at the drink after my first sip and offered to get me something else, I replaced it with a White Russian which was delicious. My White Russian had this beautiful and large piece of ice in it, had it been taken out, there would not have been that much actual drink in my glass, but I get it, it's for aesthetics. My brother also did not like his first drink, but he drank it and then got something different for his second drink and that he loved. This was, far and away, the best bar I've ever been to. It's hidden by the hotel entrance, and is an adventure in itself finding the spot. We got extremely lucky and managed walk in with a party of 4, split up into two tables of 2. The drinks were amazing; my favorites were the cookies and cream and the salt and pepper. The entire process, from lining up in a hotel lobby, to being led down dingy steps to sitting on a tiny toad stool..there are so many fabulous cocktail bars in CDMX, do not be upset if you could not snag a reservation here, you are doing your self a favor. I made a reservation here right as they opened 2 weeks in advance. When we got there, we had to wait in line to be let in for about 10 minutes, so make sure to arrive early. The speakeasy itself is shockingly small, so not many people can dine at the same time. Service was extremely fast and great, and everyone we spoke to spoke English. The drinks were good. Currently distinguished as the #2 rated bar in the world (January 2026), expectations were high. It's great to get a reservation, but once reservations open, the spots are taken almost immediately. You can do walk ins and, if people don't show up, the walk ins are given those seats, but you may be waiting for some time, and you are given a one got know for walk ins to drink. We were about to get a reservation so, with that done 90 minutes of time inside. Obviously expectations are high, but can those expectations me match the reality of the drinks? In this case, yes. First, the service, impeccable. You are walked in to your seat from the outside, water is brought and the baby is explained. And, when drinks are brought, each drink is explained in detail from ingredients to the thought process behind the drink. The flavors? Amazing. So much goes in to each drink, and you can really taste the nuisances in each digital. From the forward notes, to middle notes and backend flavors, it's really like drinking art but with so much flavor. You really can't go wrong with any cocktail at Handshake. Came on a Tuesday night around 8:15 PM with no reservation. After an hour waiting, we were able to get in due to some cancellations. I say it's worth the wait! But reservations are highly recommended weeks in advance, maybe even months. You get an hour total once inside, last call when you're 30 minutes in. We tried a few drinks, no food since we weren't hungry. They gave a complimentary mixed nuts. I had the mini Espresso Martini (one of the best i've had), mini Mezcal Negroni (smooth and bold) , Matcha + Yuzu (I wish i had more) and Hojicha Tea Champagne (non-alcoholic and so refreshing). Hubbs got the Butter Mushroom Old Fashioned, Olive Oil Gimlet and mini Dirty Gin Martini. He enjoyed all of them. I tried his drinks too and everything went down nicely. Make a reservation asap as they open up thru OpenTable within 14 days ahead of time so make sure that you nab the one you want as this space is small exclusive and seats are limited.The awesome Javier greeted us outside a hotel and briefed behind door number 13. Each patron is given a timespan of 1.5 hours to enjoy their time within the magical laboratory that is Handshake. The entire restaurant is excited to great you and does loudly which adds to the very upbeat and exciting atmosphere. HipHop on blast is the music that textures and if you're lucky enough to sit at the bar, you get to see everything made live and in person. The menu is big but their selection is limited to just the right amount of familiar, then one of a kind then elevated familiar again. They have 4 pre-batched 'miniature cocktails' and it is an amazing concept and serves as a perfect sipper while one looks over their densely curated menu of cocktails that are specifically from here. Our official first round was none other that the Pina Colada. However nothing about this is traditional. Its airy approach to our creamed iced expectation. The tastes are strong and the tallboy they serve it is lovely all around. The next round we enjoyed was a 'Banana' Manhattan straight from a forbidden jungle and probably the most tiki item on this menu. Our final round was a cocktail called One Night in Oaxaca. This is a mezcal central complex libation which is very very well done. While the menu is very adventurous, I do wish there was two things more to build out this program. We need a Cosmopolitan and we need a Classic Martini with a twist. The variations of these they have listed are so rich in a syrup and doesn't have enough valume to be priced as such. There is also sadly an elevated part of the menu that showcases vintage cocktails but sadly are only made with very rare liquors and the price points are not an option when making this spot part of your date night. After a few trips to Mexico City and not being able to visit Handshake, I was finally able to check out this acclaimed bar not once but twice. I planned ahead and made two separate reservations, one in the basement and one on the main floor. The menus are slightly different with speciality cocktails that are unique for each space. The OG cocktails are the same however which include the staple drinks that they're famous for. Out of all the drinks I tried my favorites had to be the Mexi Thai with coconut milk, tomato, makrut lime and basil oil and the Matcha Yuzu! All their drinks are unique and feel so special! What I didn't expect was how friendly and lively the space would be! The bartenders all greet you with a bienvenido when someone arrives and hasta leaves when someone leaves. On the main floor this is especially fun as the space is one large rectangle vs the basement which is more intimate. Everyone was so friendly and dancing to the music. The bartenders and staff looked like they were having a ton of fun as well! We were the last party to leave during our time slot and were trying to take a group picture in front of the bar when they invited us behind the bar to take a picture with all the bartenders and stuff. Did I stay up until 2am to get a reservation at HandShake? Yes. Would I do it again? Definitely. We wanted to visit since it was on the World's 50 Best Bars List. Sometimes I am wary of the "lists" and feel like it's warranted. In the case of HandShake, it was not. While the "welcome" was a little over the top, it was still fun. We were the first seating of the night and were seating at the bar versus a table. It was so fun! They start you off with hot towels and tell you about the bar. It reminded me a little bit of our experience with bars in Seoul and Tokyo. Given a mix of snacks (that includes crickets!), we ordered our first round. I actually don't drink due to health reasons, but my partner does. Thankfully, HandShake had several mocktail options but they actually made an off-menu one for me after I described to them what I liked. I wasn't going to order another one but they gave me a sample of the chamomile tea champagne and it was not what I expected and was absolutely delicious so I ordered that as well. After a two-hour wait in the walk-in line (worth every minute), we descended into a velvet-clad time capsule where the Roaring '20s meets 2025 mixology. We got to Handshake Speakeasy around 7:15pm. So much for it being a secret. We found the black door with the "13" on it but saw a person with an iPad outside the door. We checked in with her and asked about availability. They were able to accommodate us, so we lucked out with a walk-in! They even sat us at a cozy, romantic corner at the back of the bar. Loved the chill hip hop they played so I was definitely vibing with the place. Service was excellent. The cocktails were made fast, which was much appreciated since we had to be out of there in 30 minutes to make a dinner reservation. The servers were friendly and actually all looked like they could be bartenders. We ordered the 2 most popular cocktails off the menu: Once Upon a Time in Oaxaca and Banana Manhattan. Once Upon a Time in Oaxaca was smoked by steel wool, which made it a spectacle. The flavor was super interesting and reminded me of clarified milk punch cocktail. Sure they have the music bumping, but it helps drain out the background conversations so you can focus on your own. The mini coctails are a great way to try multiple drinks. I had the Mezcal Negroni and it was strong in flavor, the profile is not for the weak! The Lychee Highball and Cariño are good for those wanting a yummy, fruity drink. The Fig Martini was also nice. I couldn't have had a better experience at this bar; it exceeded all expectations! It is the #1 bar in the world! It truly is. I encourage you all to Google it for confirmation. That fact alone was the primary reason I wanted to go during my visit to Mexico City. There were four people total, and we were all like little kids in a candy store. We knew we wanted to try every single cocktail on their menu, and we did just that! I was very proud of us, actually! I am normally a tequila drinker and almost 40 years old, so I was a little nervous about mixing alcohols, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I was willing to gamble the hangover the next day! Glad to announce that none of us were hungover, which just proved to us that these were all QUALITY, PREMIUM cocktails. One of the world's top 50 bars, but IMO a little overrated. Very difficult to get in without a reservation, we were lucky and had some cancellations with rainy weather and got in after waiting about 45 min on a Saturday The ambience was nice, cool speakeasy vibes through a fire escape door. The setting was moody and intimate, albeit the music was a bit loud The drinks were probably the most disappointing part of the entire experience. About 300-400 pesos per drink, but most of the ones we got were just not that tasty - the mushroom maple old fashioned tasted like Tennessee honey with a hint of maple syrup, and one of the other drinks we got had a strangely medicinal taste to it. The only drink we liked was the saffron drink. Oh, also if you're afraid of insects beware the nut medley - they do indeed have some surprise chapulines in there (although granted they were quite tasty) I'd probably go again if there wasn't a wait and the drinks were a little cheaper, but as it stands not sure how they topped the world's best 50 bars read more

I truly do not get the hype at all. This spot was recommended by two friends (not to mention every list of bars in CDMX), but we would not recommend wasting your time or energy here. We showed up 15 mins before our reservation and were told to come back right on time. We went upstairs to the hotel bar for a quick drink and came back one minute before our reservation. We were told to get in line (which was at least 20 people deep- so if people are lined up why weren't we able to get in line when we arrived?). There were three lines- 2 for those with reservations and 1 for walk-ins. We were welcomed in 25 mins after our reserved time. This is when we realized, they flip the whole space with each reservation time. So everyone was getting settled in and their first drink order at the same time. Walk-ins were seated 5 mins after us. The staff was on a mission - we were asked for our order 2 mins after being seated...we hadn't even picked a drink yet. They were clearly rushing and more focused on getting everyone in and out according to the reservation "shifts" versus providing a customer-focused environment. Drinks were just okay. The Orange Blossom is the only one I would have again. Fast forward to 10pm (we've been inside for only 30 mins despite the 9pm reservation). The server comes up and tells us its last call because the 90-min window is up at 10:30. Ummm, we had only been seated for 30 mins. When we questioned them, they walked away then came back with a much nicer attitude and told us we could stay as long as we wanted. Well, that's great. We will take our 90 mins since we had to make a reservation, wait in line, etc. But honestly, we were so turned off by the whole experience and the last 20 mins we were there they were "flipping" to a new group of patrons, so it wasn't an enjoyable environment. As for ambience, think dark, stark bank vault or something. No character, no vibe (other than stuffy and pretentious). We found several other bars in CDMX that we liked much much more. THE BIG: Number one bar in the world (in 2025)! Located in the Juarez neighborhood of CDMX, it's also very close to the Roma Norte neighborhood and the angel of independence monument is a stone throw away. Very vibey inside and street parking available. THE BLACK AND WHITE: We came here 20 mins before the bar opened to snag a seat because we didn't have reservations and there was already a line that was 15 ppl deep. Fortunately we only had to wait about 45 mins to get inside. For drinks, we got the Mini espresso martini, matcha yuzu, tea champagne (non alcoholic), and olive oil gimlit. All were delicious and the espresso martini came in such a cute small glass. There were also assorted nuts that were complimentary. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall a great speakeasy bar that warrants the number one spot. We spent around 900 MXN for four drinks. Not too shabby and the vibes are here. read more

A really fun and unique experience! The entire speakeasy was a special experience from the moment you walk in the door. The baristas explain each drink in detail and the ingredients and care that goes into every cocktail are really special. The bar itself is really cozy and dim but has a nice vibe to it. An incredible place that blew away my already high expectations. Came for a midnight reservation with a group of four. The area was lively and fun to walk around at that time on a Friday night. We were moved into a waiting line and then brought down through several areas until we were seated. The drink list had so many tempting options and we worked our way through a good chunk of them. The clarified pina colada was a flavor standout. The micro cilantro on top was funky and different and you can certainly remove it if it's not your style. The pb and j cocktail was mind blowing as well. The chocolate work on the top was so intricate and realistic, such a unique touch. Nothing new to say here except that if you don't get a reservation, you still have a chance at getting in! Especially on an off night and toward the end of the evening. Cocktails are definitely very cool and unique and our favorite was the PB and J! Service is excellent and I wish we could have stayed longer and not had food poisoning :P read more
