TL;DR: check your receipts, and an employee signing your credit card charges for you is fraud.
This rating is based entirely on the service/fraud committed by one of the employees (William), not the drinks or the bar itself. Just stay alert when paying for your bill.
First, as noted in other posts it gets busy. It's a very small place with limited seating, so it's understandable for the service to not necessarily be the most outstanding. That being said, that is no excuse to be fraudulent.
After asking for the check, William brought over the terminal and showed me the bill. It took me a moment for me to scan the charges and make sure it accurately reflected what we ordered. While I was still scanning, William asked if I would like to give a tip. Again, I was still scanning the charges, so it took a moment for me to respond. He continued, "10, 15, 18 percent?" while I was still scanning. A moment later, I said 10 (which is common in Mexico), and it looked like he had already pressed one of the buttons before my response, and he said, "ok" to the 10%. Immediately after, he signs for me on the credit card terminal (which I did not ask nor give permission to do, and he did not attempt to give me the terminal to sign myself). When he asked if I wanted a copy of the receipt, I said yes and also kept the itemized one since my friends and I were going to split later. I double-checked the receipt because I had a feeling something sketchy was going on, especially because he thought it was appropriate to sign for me. When I did the mental math, I knew it was higher than 10%, but I also checked using the calculator on my phone, and it indeed came up to 15%.
I considered letting it go but was extremely uncomfortable with William having signed for me, so I went up to him and told him calmly and sternly, "I said 10%. You charged 15. I'm going to dispute it with my credit card company." He feigned ignorance and was apologizing, saying "I'm so sorry" and then asked me to wait while he took my receipts somewhere. He came back with some pesos (the difference between the 10 and 15 percent) and continued to apologize but did not give me the receipts back. At first I tried not to take the pesos, but he insisted, so I took them. I then said, "I'm going to need my receipts." He asked me to follow him to the other side of the bar, which I did, and he asked the cashier for my receipt. At first he just gave me the itemized one, but I told him I would need both. I was able to get both and left.
I still called my credit card company to inform them of the fraud, and there will still be a dispute moving forward. I share this review to say -- just make sure to check your receipts. Maybe he thought I was drunk and wouldn't notice, but I was sober and had only 2 drinks in more than 1-2 hours, plus water.
All this to say, just stay savvy, be mindful, and look at your receipts. read more
