I hired Jessie Pharias to complete a bathroom remodel project that I had started on my home. He required that I put down 50% of the quote, which I am now told is illegal. The project was supposed to take 3 days, per Jessie. I thought that seemed really fast but he was supposed to be the expert so I trusted him. The day it was supposed to start I cleared my schedule to be home only to find out once the tile guy was overdue by a hour that he got hung up at another job and could not make it. I was told they were trying to find someone else. It took them several days to reschedule the start up. I found out halfway through the project that they were advertising on craigslist for a tile setter, they sent this person to my home as if he was a known employee. The tile guy was great and a extremely hard worker but the project took a week. During that time I received no visits from Jesse to check on the job or this worker that they did not even know, when I questioned them about why they have not checked in with the worker or me, they said they only send people they trust, so I had to call them on the fact that they sent a stranger to do the job. To make a long story shorter, they promised this worker he would be paid when he finished his part of the project. When the time came they refused to pay him! Although they had collected $1300 up front from me and never came to the job or did any work to earn what I had already paid. The disgruntled worker was threatening them and so they asked that I pay him the balance of the bid for the portion of work that was completed. I felt bad for this hard working person because he fulfilled his agreement and did the job. So I paid a additional $806 which covered what it cost for the tile portion of my bathroom. Jesse and Mindy promised to send him a check for the balance of what they owed him $500 on a Friday, which was 2-3 days after completing my tile work. Well when this tile guy did not receive a check he informed me that he did some checking with the Department of Industrial Relations and was told that he could come after me the homeowner for the balance. I informed Jesse Pharias and Mindy Lyon about this and was told that they were not going to pay him any additional amounts and that they are now saying he went over budget!!! Are you kidding me? They collected $1300 upfront and did no work!!! I am working on reporting this company to as many agencies as possible because I am finding out the license number they use is not valid. They probably have a history of not paying workers which is why they couldn't get a tile worker to show up and are advertising on craigslist. Homeowners and tradesman beware of this company and this couple as they will scam you! If anyone has any advice on what steps I can take to shut these folks down or help this worker get paid I would greatly appreciate it! We need to stop these type of businesses from ripping people off! I don't know why Yelp doesn't advertise negative reviews but I am hoping they will share this one as it is in everyones best interest. read more
