Hancock County Court - Castle-like courthouse

Geake and Henry constructed the building. The limestone Courthouse sits on a prominent plaza on Main Street in Greenfield, the county seat. In front, stands a beautiful statue of the town's favorite poet, James Whitcomb Riley. Several towers and a prominent center clock tower are exterior focal points. Inside, the deputy staff is friendly and welcoming. They directed me to several cases of historical information and told me I could take photos anywhere except courtrooms, which were in session. This is a fully operational Courthouse. The original treasurer's safe sits in the marble lined lobby. The floor is marble mosaic tiled. The building is mostly original and remodeled in 1990's. Gargoyles peer down periodically. The ceilings have beautiful gilded trim. There are several murals of Revolutionary war scenes and a prominent mural of James Whitcomb Riley surrounded by a group of children. Two sets of fabulous ornate wrought iron stairways lead up two flights. An elevator was added at some point and other updates were evident in several offices. The third floor sits under a beautiful stained glass dome. Arched stain glass windows surround the magnificent dome. The courtrooms sit in the third floor. I really wanted to see the courtrooms, but I didn't want to go to jail. This 130 year old structure is remarkable and a must visit if you are in Greenfield. In fact, this is a destination worthy visit for history and architecture buffs. Free street parking surrounds the building. The building is accessible.

I didn't get the officers name or badge number. The officer was such a kind person. He explained the change while I was admitting running the light. Overall, I had a good encounter. Not all police are rude and disrespectful, and not all citizen they protect are criminals and out to break laws. He joked, and I made a joke. We treated each other with respect. Officer, thanks for the warning instead of a citation. P. Thomas

Why does department even exist? why are they paying these people to just sit there and think it's funny when you call? A robot can answer calls and dispatch a squad car if it's available to come tell the neighbors to cut their music down and shut the party down. And then she has the nerve to say there isn't a noise ordinance! really! every city in every town in the US of A unless you're in the back woods somewhere has a noise ordinance! Is just beyond pathetic and the only thing you can do about it is VOTE. Try to vote these lame people out of their position and get somebody there who gets it and gives a hoot.

I have had nothing but extremely negative experiences with the Indiana State Police. I've been stopped many times over the years, and some states and departments are worse than others, but when these guys pull me over I almost always get the maximum ticket for any offense they can figure out or trump up. Even worse was this... as an example: when I was late for a concert in Cleveland, he not only wrote me a speeding ticket, but after hearing that I had a concert and fans waiting, proceeded to search every inch of my car for about 45 minutes, taking his time as much as he possibly could. He decided to do that when I honestly told him I had been in a hurry and I was sorry. He did it because he could and he made me very late for the show. As it happened, not many people showed up anyway, but I don't forget things like that. To me these guys are representative of their Department, and if their mission in life is to make life miserable for honest people with nothing to hide, then they're doing a great job.

There have been several death investigations over the years attributed to suicide. Reports of physical abuse rarely get noticed. The mental health cell blocks are where I experienced the most inhumane treatment. Deputies and mental health staff can place a defendant on suicide watch whenever they feel he or she is a threat to themselves or others. This authority is often abused by the staff and defendants are placed on suicide watch frequently without just cause. The housing units used to hold those on suicide watch are the nastiest areas, with serious health-code violations. Defendants are placed in cells naked with a mat, special blanket, and smock to wear if they have to leave their cell. Feces, from who knows how many different defendants over however long period of time, is clearly visible on most of the surfaces in the majority of cells. Defendants are rarely given the opportunity to shower and when they do, they find the showers covered in the same fecal matter as described in the cells. Defendants are under 24 hour surveillance by a camera sitting on the second row of bars directly in front of cells. Deputies are also suppose to make rounds verifying the physical safety and well-being of defendants. Since the majority of those placed on suicide watch have documented mental health issues, the environment is loud and agitating. It is almost impossible to sleep with the constant yelling, banging, and shaking of the bars. If you did not have serious mental health issues before going to suicide watch, you most certainly did after a few days in this environment. Deputies often physically abuse defendants and have the authority to take away the mat, blanket, and smock. I was left in my cell with nothing but my naked body and a steel bed-frame for several days at a time. This only further caused my mental health state to deteriorate. There are so many more horrendous, gruesome details that I am not including in this review. I feel they deserve their proper attention in a court of law. Through it all I never once attempted to harm myself or anyone else, which was their justification for keeping me on suicide watch. I was fortunate in that regard knowing many other people who ,while being held at Marion County Jail, took their last breath.
