For a little under $200, me and my husband had the best morning celebrating our first anniversary at Hanai Hives. We allotted enough time to head up to the North Shore and it was easy to find this location thanks to the clear directions in email. I've wanted to learn more about the bees for a long time and what better way than to put on a get a private tour where you get to suit up and get a fab lesson from Katie and team on the ins and outs of the bees working hard at making honey. Our tour was about 2 hours long. We were in awe of how hard the beekeepers and the bees here work. We even got to see another bee robbing another bee on site! And saw how to get the beetles out of there! I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to get the right sized suit. And they are super nice about taking photos for you!!! The tour ended with a honey tasting and charcuterie board with mint infused iced water! Then we were off to the gift shop which had all the flavors available for tasting -- we loved the hot honey. We arrived and no one was there. Luckily, Nam, a student at Hanai Hives, arrived with a mentee and her son by complete chance. Nam was a student beekeeper and tried her very best to take us on this tour. She was NOT our designated guide and did not need to do the tour. Only through the kindness of her heart did she show us her personal hive. I am slightly disappointed that our beekeeper did not show up. I am sure this tour is worth the price if your designated tour guide shows up. read more

Katie and her team were absolutely amazing during our tour today. We had a pretty big group including a toddler and they were so accommodating. Even though our toddler got tired and a little cranky they continued to be sweet and encouraging for her and didn't make us feel bad. The tour was so informative and yet fun too. Katie is truly passionate about her beekeeping and she has clearly passed that passion on to those who help her. She took pictures of everyone in our group and shared them with us at the end when we sat down to enjoy some of the honey with a beautiful charcuterie board and some ice cold water at no extra charge. Booked a visit not really knowing what to expect and we left full of smiles & an amazing experience that we will never forget. We were greeted by Katie then her helper Trinity took us on a tour of the property, gave us some knowledge about the area, plants and explained lots about bees & their habitat. We highly recommend this personalized opportunity to appreciate nature! Our 'ohana experienced Hānai Hives with friends as a homeschool field trip on the lush property. Hānai Hives recently purchased beekeeping suits large enough to fit our very, very tall 'ohana. We felt completely at ease to suit up for a hands-on check of the welfare of one hive to observe the inner workings of the healthy hive, including finding the queen at work. Hosts Aunty Katie and Trinity were generous with their time, their knowledge of the art of beekeeping, and they explained the beneficial community stewardship offered by their Adopt-A-Hive programs. We were refreshed by a honey tasting at the end of our visit and were pleased to offer our sticky serving platters and plates as a snack for the bees (no honey wasted!). We bought yummy jars of the chili infused honey and cinnamon vanilla honey. The only downfall was the road construction near Haleiwa town that delayed us, so bring patience and allow a cushion of extra time to arrive safely -- it's worth it to reach the Hānai Hives garden serenity on the North Shore. read more

She is patient, works so well with the children, and at the same time, provides an educational experience that is fun and informative for the whole family. Katie was an excellent host! She gave a tour of some of the plants and trees on her property. Lots of fruits. She made sure we were safe and comfortable around the hives. It was great to be around so many bees safely and have an opportunity to observe them. We got to see the queen! The honey and snacks afterwards were delicious. I found out about Katie and her company HĀNAI Hives nearly 2 years ago when I reached out to ask about mentorship for bee keeping. She was just getting this side of her business going and I am so glad I had the chance to learn from her. At first I didn't know if I would even like bee keeping and I wanted to know if it was something I would enjoy or could even do some day. Well since my first meeting with her and your of one of her apiaries, I was hooked! Katie is an amazing person who took the time to teach me so much about bee keeping and the different program levels that she offers allowed me to not have to buy any equipment, bee suit, or even the bees which was great because I had no idea about any the quality of the equipment, what sizes would fit, or even the different types of honey bees! I think one the best things about the mentorship program and just working with Katie is her patience and love for her job and it shows in everything that she does. I was able to bring my wife and 6 year old son with me on many occasions to join me in bee keeping. Which was truly a blessing to do this as a family and have them enjoy the bees with me. She was always super patient with my son, who loves to explore and check out everything he can and is always trying to hold the bees! Katie always worked around my schedule and encouraged me to come to the apiary as often as I could to continue to learn and hone my bee keeping skills. My family of 5 (2 adults and 3 teenagers) went on the Bee Farm Tour at Hanai Hives. We all had so much fun! Katie was such an amazing host and taught us so much! First, we toured the property learning about all kinds of fruit trees and plants, and even got to taste some of the fruit right off the trees. Then we suited up in beekeeper suits and went to the hives. We were able to look inside a hive and see the bees at work. We found the queen bee and even observed her laying eggs. Everything was so fascinating and I couldn't believe how much we learned throughout the tour! My teenagers (ages 17,16, and 14) all enjoyed themselves and it was really a great family-friendly event to do together. We ended the tour with a honey tasting and got to taste Katie's homemade honey with crackers, cheeses, nuts, and fruits and it was all so delicious. It was the best honey I have ever eaten. We bought a large jar to take home with us and I'm pretty sure when that runs out, we'll stop by for a refill. :) The thing I loved most was how passionate Katie is about the bees.
