11/2/25 parakeet died after 2.5 month long battle with West Nile Virus…read more After seeing me crying hysterically for a couple days, Niki, a 13-year-old male cockatiel from a breeder I've had all his life (we are bonded at the soul), proceeded to eat a walnut size worth chunk out of his wooden perch the morning of 11/4/25 as a stress reaction to me crying. I had cleaned the cage and perch the previous day. I could see that no shards were on the bottom of the cage. He ingested all of that. He puked up 2-3 drops blood by afternoon, and I rushed him to a vet in Staten Island who prescribed Carafate. On 11/9/25 Niki vomited blood (seen all over his beak) all over my head, splattering it all over the walls and couch. I brought him back to the Staten Island vet who provided a referral noting complaint hematemesis, suggesting an MRI is likely the next step and agreeing something is going on in the upper GI tract. Niki was otherwise acting perfectly fine - these 2 hematemesis events were isolated symptoms. Absolutely horrified at the reviews at places throughout NJ and NYC (saying things like they took blood from a parakeet without consent and it died instantly despite being brought in healthy, and saying things like various birds not surviving anesthesia for procedures), I noticed a number of the bad reviews around the region kept saying things like I should have just waited a few more days for Dr. Malka's services. I next researched Dr. Malka and recognized his credentials, experience, and achievements far exceed those of his peers. I messaged Dr. Malka's practice through their website. They called me something like 5 minutes later. They read my story and listened to it again in the office, but they believe in the scientific method and doing their due diligence. Communities of bird owners were likewise skeptical of my story, pointing out it's normal for birds to ingest some wood. However, this was a large amount in one sitting in the context of an intensely stressful mourning of another bird in the house. I fear there is not much in the literature about mourning behaviors in birds. Fully satisfied that Mr. Malka is Niki's best chance, I ultimately chose on 11/15/25 to bring my cockatiel with internal bleeding over an hour of bumpy travel each way. It was a serious risk with no acceptable alternative that turned out to be not a bad move. Niki was given an x-ray and then anesthetized for bloodwork, CT scan, and endoscopy. All results were unremarkable or negative. Bloodwork results were available a couple of days later and reflected low iron as a recent episode, expected as would be consistent with hematemesis episodes. I was provided with images and reports as requested. About to fly out of the area, Dr. Malka passed me off to Dr. Lambert appropriately given how I expressed I specifically wanted only his services. Both doctors held their professionalism and presented with good bedside manner as I experienced much anxiety and likely overcommunicated throughout everything as a result, but also in the name of being thorough. They may have the knowledge, but they don't have unlimited time. But, I do have less limited time to think through every detail of what I'm seeing and hearing. This makes for a great doctor-patient team. They tolerated the extra time consumption in a way that was exemplary. After anesthesia, Niki was holding up his right leg a lot (could have been discomfort from the procedure rather than from the drug), he slept excessively for a couple days (80-90% of the time), was shaky for about 10 minutes upon wake-up, barely ate or drank for two days, was irritable, and had constant photophobia for about 3-4 days. This is not a complaint. I fully understand this is the drug that was necessary, and others would have been insufficient or had worse side effects, but for a while there I did not know if he was hurt from the procedures until I researched the drug, being their office was closed on Sunday. They also offered to hospitalize him overnight, which I believe would have had no extra charge, but that ultimately would not have changed anything because he was still somewhat affected on day 4. Some inflammation was noted on endoscopy, and Dr. Lambert explained on the phone that they cannot rule out my story about the wood, but there were no foreign bodies found. Having achieved a number of rule outs to the original 5-6 possibilities Dr. Malka initially wrote on a dry erase board, I have yet to get anyone anywhere, professional or layman, to have a potentially lifesaving hypothetical conversation with me about what if it is the wood. I can't say it wasn't worth it. Before the procedures, some of the possibilities included things like cancer and heavy metal poisoning. I now know that, if whatever it was is indeed over, I otherwise have a healthy bird whose life likely isn't quite half over. The cost was reasonable - less than half what others wanted.

I'm a new patient, and I'm happy to share that the staff was very kind and welcoming! I really…read moreappreciate Dr. Lambert and the nurses in the office. I came in with a tight budget, and let them know. With increasing prices everywhere, the office offered the lowest rate I could find in my area at $108 per bird physical exam (I was previously paying $120 and quoted $160 elsewhere). They did the best they could with my pets with my budget, and welcomed me back for a later time to get further tests done that I couldn't afford at the time. The staff were very patient and accommodating, offices were nice and clean. I did not feel rushed at all and was able to voice all my concerns and get advice on husbandry. I will definitely continue to come here from now on!

I feel it's imperative that I post this review, as I felt extremely uncomfortable after my…read moreexperience with this company. Fortunately, my puppy is safe. I had reached out to various dog trainers on Yelp to find one for my puppy. I came across Michael of Genius K9 who offered me some free training advice. He then pitched dog walks and dog boarding with his company if I was ever interested. Since my regular dog walker was going to be away a few days this month, I was interested. It was downhill from here. I tried to set up a "meet and greet" with the dog walker that Michael suggested (I will not name him here), and I couldn't reach Michael via text. After I sent him a follow up, I got a message on Yelp from the dog walker. We exchanged a few messages, and despite me getting an uncomfortable vibe from the person, I agreed to a "meet and greet." The meeting further confirmed the uncomfortable vibe, but I was going to go for it anyway because I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and trust them. The next day, when I was confirming the walk, it took almost seven hours to hear back from the walker to the point that I started contacting other walkers. At this point, I no longer felt comfortable using a company that did not carry insurance where I did trust the walker. Boy, did I make the right decision. I message Michael on Yelp that night to cancel and he says no worries and please feel free to use them in the future. Okay, sounds fine. Next day, I get a text message from the walker saying that he'll be by in 25 minutes to pick up my puppy for the walk. I told him that I cancelled last night and asked if Michael told him. Michael hadn't. The walker responded that I should pay him anyway because he traveled part of the way and really needs the money. He also gave me the impression that he was going to go pick up my puppy. Fortunately, he wasn't going to still pick up my puppy. He just wanted to be paid. I am still shaken up by this experience and want to warn others out there to be careful with this company. I am still worried now that I should change the code to my lock box, as I had told the walker the code before deciding to use another walker. If anyone has questions about my experience, please feel free to message me directly.

With a shortage of airlines that allow rabbits and the stress it puts on them to travel, finding a rabbit boarder near me was a priority upon moving to New York. I'm so glad I chose Civil Street.
