The shoppers perfectly represent the cesspool that is Fulton, MO with their stomachs hanging over the waistline of their pants and, like another reviewer mentioned, a tattooed, skinny boyfriend with a wallet chain and probably a Tapout shirt or something. Probably a screaming toddler neglected in the cart who grabs at toys and pesters the 20-year-old parents. I did meet a cashier who complimented my Misfits shirt. So that's a plus. The facing is nice sometimes. It's a wreck around the holidays.

Fiddling with his dashboard is somewhat like being thrown behind the wheel of the USS Enterprise, so we weren't sure if we had hit the right button when the car delivered it's grim, panic inducing message - 4 miles to empty. With much alacrity, we pulled off the highway to seek a desperately needed refill. To the left was Auxvasse, 6 miles, to the right, Callaway, a mere 3 miles. We decided that Callaway would be a lovely destination and turned south, nervously watching the display and hoping we wouldn't be subjected to yet another 4 hour rescue wait from AAA on this particular road trip. With 1 mile left to empty (and my father having reassured me over the phone that his swank-mobile is quite accurate on these things), we found Wright Brothers Grocery and pulled in with great relief. Ha ha, said Jeff and I, petrol, salvation, hooray for not running out of gas! Alas, Fate, that cruel and fickle bitch, was merely toying with us. Wright Brothers is not actually open on Sundays...foiled. In desperation, Jeff went to speak to some neighbors to see if we could buy enough gas from them to make it to another gas station. Amid a swarm of friendly dogs, we learned that the neighbors,sadly, had empty gas cans (it is lawn mowing season, after all) , but a nice fellow named Joel offered to drive Jeff to the nearest open gas station 7 miles away so he could get enough go-buggy juiceto get us back on the road. I bid Jeff adieu and waited with the car, wondering what horrible thing I'd done in a past life to deserve such rotten luck. I sat, idly watching the dogs buzzing my vehicle and wondering if we could manage to sleep in the car if necessary, when a couple pulled into the lot. "Do you need gas," queried the friendly gentlemen. "Why, indeed I do," I replied. Turns out, this was my lucky day after all. The kind proprietor of Wright Brothers came by his shop to pick up some charcoal and that lovely man turned the pump on for me, saving Jeff and I at least an hour of hassle. Jeff and Joel came back to me gleefully filling the tank, hooray! I went into the store briefly to pay up and was boggled by the vast selection of...everything...contained within. Why, hello, Awesome! This place is floor to rafters stocked with booze, groceries, auto parts, hunting knives, candy, stuff, stuff and more stuff, and I'm pretty sure I spotted several varieties of locally made jerky too, bonus. It's like a modern day general store, I was bummed that I wasn't there on an open day to peruse this amazing store, it looked to be packed with treasures. So, for saving my sorry ass from yet another road disaster and for the wonderful family owned goodness contained within, 5 stars. I'll be sure to stop off here when on this stretch of road to patronize this place and I encourage you to do the same, it's a nifty little establishment with wonderful neighbors and an owner with a heart of gold. Huzzah for Wright Brothers!

About 2 hours in we see signs on highway 54 for "Barnyard Smokehouse". Drooling over the signs and starving my wife start calculating by the time we arrive at our destination it'll be too late to eat with family so we follow the signs. There's no offramp, just hang an instant right off the highway onto the dirt road at the barnyard. Used to clearly marked offramps I missed it and had to take a detour. Luckily in Missouri you can make u-turns on the freeway :-D The entire property is the "Central Missouri Meat & Sausage". There's a deli, market, and restaurant called "Barnyard Smokehouse". Beef and pork is locally raised and butchered on site. Walking in the door we're greeted by warm and friendly people telling us to sit wherever. The restaurant is inside the market/deli to the right. Lots of tables. To start we order some fried pickles. They're sliced thin and battered in cornmeal and served with ranch dressing which is one of the food groups in Missouri. I wish the pickles used were more sour but they tasted really good. For dinner I had their smoked brisket with Texas toast, BBQ beans and Mac-n-Cheese. My wife had the same thing but with "bacon, cheddar, and ranch potato salad" and mac-n-cheese. When it came out I was skeptical since the tri-tip came out in paper thin slices but I shouldn't have judged a pile of meat by its looks since it was fantastic. Beef was saturated with smoky goodness and due to the thin cuts it was super tender. On the table was several made in house BBQ sauces. I really enjoyed their spicy one and my wife liked the sweet one. Side dishes were great too. Due to our odd flight times we only had a tiny sandwich on the airplane so we both devoured everything on our plates. While waiting for our food I walked over to the dessert case and perused. Another standard item in Missouri are refrigerated whip creamed based "pies". We ordered the oreo cookie one. It was gut busting rich. Thick slab of dense vanilla custard topped with crushed oreos and whipped cream. Super rich and decadent. We both felt like we were going to burst after our meals but it was a great start to our vacation. When walking around the market after we saw these giant 6 to 7 foot cured meat sticks made from pork. Since we were going to a potluck in a few days we got 4 of them and at the party cut them up into bite sized pieces. These pork sticks are AMAZING. The BBQ flavor was the favorite followed by the jalapeno. They have them in more reasonable sized pieces too that are vacuum sealed. I bought some for myself and some co-workers. If you find yourself driving on Highway 54 through Fulton, MO do yourself a favor and follow the signs to this great place!!
