I go to Hamptons when I like to feel posh and pretentious.
Downstairs is an Aladdin's Cave of little nick-nacks and fancy furnishings for your house that you didn't realise you couldn't live without until you just happened to stumble across them, and enough artsy farsty, stylish and hilarious greetings cards to make you want to redecorate your house in them. We are in Penarth though so be prepared to shell out if you decide to take yourself up on the idea.
Upstairs is the Blue Pelican Café, which is just quivvering on the fine line between being delightfully quaint and sickeningly jolly.
I visit the café often with a friend who has small children, as it is particularly child friendly. The surrounding kitsch homewares make for a much more pleasant environment in which to endure the screaming tantrums of every 2 year-old in town, and the healthy kids' snack boxes on the menu seem to go down well with the mums.
There's also a lift to the café big enough to fit in a double buggy and some tag-alongs.
The real appeal of the café, however, is its centrepiece. The cake stands.
'Fuckin' hell this coffee cake is bloody brilliant!' doesn't receive the best looks from the Hawaiian shirt-clad staff, but is a point well made I feel. read more
