The Smoke & Oak has been on my wish list list for a while and I'm happy I finally went! The location is nondescript, looking like a normal house from the street were it not for the sign. Street parking was not difficult to find. Inside, the ambiance is great. Soft warm lighting, ample plush leather chairs for seating, attractive displays of cigars and a huge selection of whiskeys. The staff are passionate, knowledgeable, and friendly and made great recommendations. Walking in as a complete novice felt intimidating, and they made it much easier than I expected. I was taught basic terminology and options on pairings. Pricing felt reasonable and fair. The atmosphere was extremely laid back and relaxing. Socializing and networking with the other men was fun. Our daughter moved to another state than us and it made some planning aspects more challenging but Jera and Nia filled every gap, helping answering questions with planning, giving advice and tips regarding etiquette and ordering and were just so hands on the day of the event that every single detail of the day flowed perfectly. And I do mean perfectly! That's rare!Weddings can be very stressful but honestly they took the stress right out by their knowledge, experience, work ethic and professional care over the entire day. The day was in their capable hands as they coordinated each detail. The weather looked a bit ominous early on but they planned for every option to host inside or out but then the sun did came out and their plan to use multiple spaces for day and night were the best decision anyway because why not want to use as much of this special property as possible! Our family also had the pleasure of staying at the venue the whole weekend and it was lovely to say the least! Comfy beds, soft sheets and pillows and a good hot shower after a few long days of getting ready for the wedding were so welcomed! We can't thank them enough for making the day so "extra" special! Either way, while the delivery was made by 11 am (I requested an early delivery), the bouquet had more greenery than flowers and did not come with a balloon at all. I called the florist and spoke with a lady named Tiffany. She explained that I had ordered through FTD and that they "only got 43 dollars" and some change (I can't remember the exact amount) of the money I paid and that they included the flowers and colors indicated. She was very nice but didn't offer to make it right in anyway. I plan to contact FTD as well. I'm ashamed to say I never checked the reviews on this business before I ordered because I myself am an elite Yelp reviewer and value others reviews. Lesson learned!

When I played, we had had an unseasonable amount of rain lately, and it was pretty soppy out there. Cart path only, and I think many un-intentional hazards around. Will definitely try it again based on my experience. This was one of those days that even though it was winter, and there was quite a bit of rain lately, a lot of people were trying to play, as it was the first golfable day in awhile. Because of this, the first tee was backed up, but was happy with the pace of play after that. This course is pretty old, original construction in the 1930s, so it is not long by today's standards. It is however, technical. Smart golfers here will opt to NOT use driver on many of the holes, as shot placement is much more important than distance. There are eagle opportunities here for big hitters that also have control (i.e. the 1% of golfers) There is a lot of slope. In some cases, being short on your approach can result in your ball rolling back 30 yards or more. Some of the greens as well are very challenging, but even in the winter, pretty well kept. Primary defenses here are the slope, the greens, and the placement of some bunkers. There is even a par 3 where you're going to have a hard time choosing a club, because the green is so far below the teebox. Overall, this course was a great value, and I would certainly come back and play again. I'll update my review when I do, hopefully the conditions will be better!

They have their own food services that are open all hours in case you arrive late and none of the nearby food places are open, gas stations are abundant in the area, there is a grocery store not far from the hotel, and it is right off Interstate 85. They did not have the type of room we initially reserved so we got to stay on the 3rd floor in a suite. I called it "the rock star suite." My family checked out this hotel before we came to stay here & the staff was kind enough to give them a tour and let them see a room. They also told them that they took pride in the hotel & are very strict about cleanliness. They weren't kidding; this has to be the cleanest & most spacious hotel I have ever stayed in. There is a train that comes through here but when it came by, I didn't really feel it. At best it felt more like you had turned on a vibrating bed. I also heard no noise from it. If you are not a smoker or have sensitivity to cigarette smoke, make sure to ask for a second or third floor room since those apparently have smoke smell in them. They also have free breakfast from 6-9:30 with a way to make your own waffles. I did this & my waffle was a little burned but turned out okay. I'd definitely stay here again if I were in the area.
