My local Newsagent was not only the proud winner of the prestigious 'Best Newsagent' award (2006) it is also involved in the honorable struggle against the onslaught of porn in our community and has been since 1989. A huge banner decorates the cheerful front window of Hamdy's declaring "THIS IS A PORN FREE NEWSAGENT." Thank goodness for that I say. I agree with Hamdy's and have no problem with people that partake in the purchase of porn, I just don't want to witness them doing it when I buy my morning paper and orange juice. Although it is not possible to buy porn here, Hamdy's has a huge selection of other types of magazines, from fashion to fishing and everything in between. It's almost as if they are trying to encourage non porn related hobbies and I think it's all very refreshing. They also stock everything else a porn free newsagent should have: cigarettes, sweeties and Ebony cards. These are my favourite cards, they feature ebony beauties in all sorts of situations (playing pool, going to church, etc.) and say things like "You are a strong, good man, a man that doesn't walk away, Happy Birthday brother." What more could you ask from a paper shop? If your answer is porn than go buy it in Soho, because in Stoke Newington, we like to keep things nice and clean. read more

Yes Eden's review is funny but I don't really get why she is hatin' on this place. I think it's lovely that a newsagents doesn't sell porn. Hamdy's sells loads of toys and sweets and slushes... All stuff aimed at kids, why would you not be happy that they didn't litter their shelves with stuff that young eyes probably shouldn't see? I also like this place because they sell sparklers most of the year around. They're also are super friendly whenever I go in there to by magazines. It's an Alladin's cave of news and all nice newsagenty things. At the moment it's awash with all things pink, like a sugar coated almond, pre sucked! Wonderfully horrid stuffed toys hang from the low ceiling, the lighting washes you with fluorescence, making you look like death but what do you care?! You are in a Porn Free heaven! And that's what sets this place apart from most other newsagents and gee! are they proud of it! And thank God! I rarely buy magazines, I don't have the attention span to read them or something, but I do occasionally glance over the racks when I go into to buy my fags or a sneaky packet of Wotsits and always, my eye can't help rest on the top shelf and the pictures of the bubble boobs popping out of a ripped white vest and instantly I go red. Completely ridiculous. No, I prefer a newsagent where I'm free from the embarrassment cause by an accidental glance and can instead buy a bargain Time Out guide book to Patagonia as an inpromtu gift for my girlfriend. read more
