Keating Beach Park is off the beaten path at the far north end of the Hollywood Boardwalk. This park was named in honor of former Hollywood Mayor David Keating. He served as a City Commissioner and Mayor from 1961 to 1986. In 1963 he took a walk on this stretch of beach and it cemented in his mind that it should remain public. For the next two decades he led the fight to save this strip of beach from Sheridan Street to the Hollywood-Dania Beach line from Hollywood Inc., a development company that claimed they owned it, not the city. On September 4, 1981, the Fourth District Court of Appeal sided with the city and decided that the 1.5 mile of beach belonged to the city. Anyone who uses the beach here today has David Keating to thank. Today Keating Beach Park is under construction. It looks like there is structural damage to the pavilion and it is fenced off. There is no parking in this area either. The restrooms are closed and the slide is gone. Still the beach remains a glorious wide strip on sundrenched sand. This area is frequented more by locals than tourists. Here is to hopping that Hollywood gets the repairs done and opens this area back up soon.

The sand is so soft and clean, with not a single bit of seaweed. This was so surprising, as just a few miles away there was a substantial amount of seaweed. There were palm trees that offered a perfect amount of shade if you prefer to lie and read your book or take a nap on the beach. Be sure to layer on the sunscreen, I used an SPF 60, and still walked away a bit flushed. The water was very comfortable and clean. I took a swim a few times, and this is in April. Why can't every beach be like Keating Beach? But wait... there was a lady who came and was yelling profanities, I thought she was on her phone, but she was actually just venting loudly to herself. She had all eyes on her, there was no stopping her. I suppose that's one way to exercise your freedom of speech! Keating Beach is as perfect as they come. Hopefully you won't encounter the minor interruption like I did.

The park was renovated at a cost of $4.36 million as part of the City Wide Parks Master Plan and it reopened on March 1, 2015. South City Beach Park has beach access, restrooms, outdoor showers, open air pavilion, two bocce courts, a fenced in playground, sand volleyball court, and a beachfront concession stand. If you chose to come here do not let your parking time run out! I have been here twice and they are very aggressive about writing tickets. Both times I saw multiple tickets written. Online it says the minimum parking ticket is $39. I even saw one car with the barnacle which covers the windshield and makes it impossible to see to drive the car until you pay the fine to unlock it. You can pay for parking on your phone by app. In addition to being quick to write a ticket, another thing I didn't care for is they change the parking price whenever they want. If you come early or late you can get a discounted price of $2 and hour which is half off the normal $4 an hour rate but another time I came on the Sunday after Fourth of July and a holiday rate of $10 was in effect. If you are going to stay all day it is fine but at least for me it discourages dropping in for an hour or two. Make sure you keep an eye on the time so you can have your best beach day here.

The result is an engaging park full of amenities for everyone to enjoy. Heritage Park has two playgrounds with Evos and Weevos play structures designed to let children flex their mental and physical muscles for creative play and upper body and core strength. a water play area, Veterans Memorial, performance stage used for the signature event Sunny Isles Beach Jazz Fest every October, dog area, great lawn, picnic tables, benches, and restrooms. The water & shoreline has continued to uphold its beauty. I love coming here when I'm feeling the itch to get out by the water. The biggest change (for the worse) is there's now a parking fee. I preferred back when it was free but since I haven't been in a while I'm not sure how long it's been like this. The fee isn't terrible, which is somewhat a positive at least. The parking lot itself is massive so I've never had an issue finding a spot even on busy days. I noticed there's a lot more trash cans along the beach, which was great to see. There's some picnic tables, a fishing pier, multiple showers to rinse off at & plenty of space to lounge. There's a smaller public restroom which is definitely a smart new addition (since I'd last been). The scattered trees provide some shade but don't expect to find much else unless you're by the pier/restaurant. As far as this coast goes, I really enjoy coming to Dania compared to others. Most of the time I can take a short walk in either direction & find myself relatively alone which is my favorite thing to do outdoors. P.S. Utilize those trash cans! Pick up after YOURSELF & OTHERS. Whatever you bring with you, take it back. Just because you didn't bring the trash doesn't mean you can't pick it up. Let's work together to keep our beaches clean.

We were fortunate to find metered street parking just steps away from the beach, making access very convenient. This boardwalk is long and you can find yourself on any part of the beach. The boardwalk had a lively atmosphere with people rollerblading, riding electric bikes, and even pedaling those fun four wheel family bikes. It created a really enjoyable and energetic vibe. When we made our way onto the beach, it wasn't crowded at all, so finding a comfortable spot to sit was easy. We even took a swim in the ocean. The water felt cool when we first stepped in, but after a few minutes our bodies adjusted, and it became a very refreshing and enjoyable swim. There was a lifeguard on duty until around 6:30 PM, which added an extra sense of comfort and safety. Across the street, there was a restaurant and bar where visitors could grab drinks, food, or snacks and bring them back to enjoy by the beach. Overall, we had a wonderful time at Hollywood Beach. The relaxed atmosphere, beautiful shoreline, and lively boardwalk made for a memorable visit, and I would definitely return.
