Sometimes we relax in the lifeguard stands and people watch. Certain times of the year, the jellyfish fill the beach near the water and will sting if bothered. As a kid, my family and friends hung out further north on Scott Street which was less congested with limited chaos but may be slightly boring. The Hollywood Beach is well kept and a wonderful addition to South Florida.

He served as a City Commissioner and Mayor from 1961 to 1986. In 1963 he took a walk on this stretch of beach and it cemented in his mind that it should remain public. For the next two decades he led the fight to save this strip of beach from Sheridan Street to the Hollywood-Dania Beach line from Hollywood Inc., a development company that claimed they owned it, not the city. On September 4, 1981, the Fourth District Court of Appeal sided with the city and decided that the 1.5 mile of beach belonged to the city. Anyone who uses the beach here today has David Keating to thank. Today Keating Beach Park is under construction. It looks like there is structural damage to the pavilion and it is fenced off. There is no parking in this area either. The restrooms are closed and the slide is gone. Still the beach remains a glorious wide strip on sundrenched sand. This area is frequented more by locals than tourists. Here is to hopping that Hollywood gets the repairs done and opens this area back up soon.

The sand is so soft and clean, with not a single bit of seaweed. This was so surprising, as just a few miles away there was a substantial amount of seaweed. There were palm trees that offered a perfect amount of shade if you prefer to lie and read your book or take a nap on the beach. Be sure to layer on the sunscreen, I used an SPF 60, and still walked away a bit flushed. The water was very comfortable and clean. I took a swim a few times, and this is in April. Why can't every beach be like Keating Beach? But wait... there was a lady who came and was yelling profanities, I thought she was on her phone, but she was actually just venting loudly to herself. She had all eyes on her, there was no stopping her. I suppose that's one way to exercise your freedom of speech! Keating Beach is as perfect as they come. Hopefully you won't encounter the minor interruption like I did.

The park was renovated at a cost of $4.36 million as part of the City Wide Parks Master Plan and it reopened on March 1, 2015. South City Beach Park has beach access, restrooms, outdoor showers, open air pavilion, two bocce courts, a fenced in playground, sand volleyball court, and a beachfront concession stand. If you chose to come here do not let your parking time run out! I have been here twice and they are very aggressive about writing tickets. Both times I saw multiple tickets written. Online it says the minimum parking ticket is $39. I even saw one car with the barnacle which covers the windshield and makes it impossible to see to drive the car until you pay the fine to unlock it. You can pay for parking on your phone by app. In addition to being quick to write a ticket, another thing I didn't care for is they change the parking price whenever they want. If you come early or late you can get a discounted price of $2 and hour which is half off the normal $4 an hour rate but another time I came on the Sunday after Fourth of July and a holiday rate of $10 was in effect. If you are going to stay all day it is fine but at least for me it discourages dropping in for an hour or two. Make sure you keep an eye on the time so you can have your best beach day here.

The cafes whether good old Senor Frogs or nicer places like Broadwalk Italian, as well as dive bars even in the older little hotels are literally steps from the water. The beach itself doesn't close as early as Miami Beach which means it's also a nice spot to enjoy the Full Moon, and the waves are perfect for swimming. You can also see the cruise ships sailing out of nearby Port Everglades.
