Staff were friendly and informative. The stills are the oldest continuously operated pot stills in the country and they are right in the tasting room. You look around and see tons of strip malls and chains. What's a local to do? Map yourself to nearby downtown Middletown, a charming reemerging historic city. On the outskirts of the downtown area, park easily on the street (or behind) and find yourself at a local husband and wife owned distillery. Here, you will find the real deal. Plentiful bourbon selection, owners who understand booze and make it too, peanuts, comfortable seating, friendly locals who care, great music, events, proximity to local events downtown, and access to delicious eats. And reasonable drinks! No longer are we going to pay $17 for our old fashioneds. We have found the place and it is here. Try the Mike's Old Fashioned, then walk out to the back patio, have a smoke, or cross the green space and find yourself at New Ales with delicious pizza. This distillery is interesting because they were the largest mail order alcohol provider back in the 1800s. The owner showcased some of their classic whiskeys between their bourbons and their ryes then brought us back to the barrels that you can bottle from and gave us a tasting to help us choose which barrels we would want to bottle. I ended up blending two barrels for an incredibly smooth bourbon that I'm excited to open up! We ended with a couple more tastings to choose between the maple rye and maple bourbon. We left with a couple bottles and an experience that we won't forget! The space is extremely small but I felt like it helped with the intimate experience. While that is a seasonal item and kind of like catching a unicorn, it was not to be, but the fella behind the bar offered to sample some of their other wines while we were in the neighborhood. I enjoyed the strawberry wine they produce and we picked up a bottle to take with us. Noticed that they were showing "the fight" that evening, and it looked like they would be an amazing place to grab a beverage and just relax for a few hours. Yellow Springs seems to be a perfect area for this type of place and I wish them success in the future.
