Needing to clear out space in my garage I gathered up enough books to overflow my laundry hamper and set out for Half Price Books. The man helping me explained the process. The would go through my books, determine their value, and give me their offer. While I was waiting, I looked through the store. The book selection really is great! The books are all at least in "good" condition if not like-new. After about 45 minutes I was called to the service desk for my offer. I was slightly stunned that I only was offered $13 in exchange for the ~50ish books I brought in! Especially given the prices of books I noted when I was browsing their inventory. I took the cash though, because really I was just trying to clutter clear. I think in the future though I will just pass along books to friends! read more

FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING HOLY DO NOT SELL YOUR STUFF HERE. They have a computer that they scan every item into, and the computer tells them what to pay. If you ask them what they paid for an individual item they'll say "Oh, it's a lot offer." This is a lie. They have an itemized list right in front of them that they don't want you to see. Why? Because a lot of what you brought in went into the computer for zero dollars. That's right, they will pay you zero dollars for merchandise they intend to sell. And you know they intend to sell it, because they're never like "Oh, we can't pay anything for these items, would you like them back?" No, they hope you'll just take the offer so they can slap a price tag on merchandise that was free for them. They deliberately withhold information about what they pay for individual items and deceive customers by telling them it's not itemized when it is. In my book that's theft by deception. read more

If you're itching to add a few books to your personal library, but not willing to empty out your wallet, Half Price is a great place to go and look through the ever-changing collection of books. Yes, most of the books are used, but the selection is generally pretty good, even with newer, mainstream titles. And of course, they're priced lower than usual bookstores. Not always priced at half the price, but lower, for sure. The employees are great. If you're looking for a specific book, you can ask them and they will look up the book for you. If it's not in store, they can call the nearby store locations and inquire. I appreciated that, because sometimes books seem a bit random and it's easy to miss if you're not looking carefully. (The specific book I was looking for wasn't there. Boo. Found it at the library.) The store also has DVDs, VHS, vinyl, comic books, etc. I don't usually pay attention to that area of the store (I'm a bookworm), but it's there. Worth a look if it's your cup of tea. One of my favorite places to shop. I love listening to records and my parent's collection that I inherited is lacking in a lot of funk and pop. There are great vinyl staples to be found in this location. I love the 50 cent VHS tapes. I found a Harold and Maude VHS last year and I was ecstatic! They always have a great clearance section with books for just a dollar or two. The best thing about HPB is that you never know what you will find. I like the search. I also like the fact that if I am looking for a classic novel I will probably find it, and for half the price that I would pay for it new. Everything is so cheap that I end up buying way too much. I have to say, I love books. No, I LOVE books. I have been a fan of reading all of my life. I have worked in libraries. I have volunteered in school libraries. I own two Kindles. I love to read. So, needless to say, I have to visit Half Price Books when I travel to Lexington. I have since infected my oldest son in reading, so we occasionally make the 100 mile trip just to visit HPB. The Sir Barton HPB location was my first experience with the HPB franchise. I later discovered this location. This one is the smaller one, but each one is unique enough to visit both. HPB is not just a used book store. It does have the best sellers, but it has much more. It has old books. It has collectible books. It has books that were popular but are currently not. It has vinyl records. It has dvd's and blu-rays. It has old table games. It has calendars, stationary, and journals. I just love coming here. I could spend hours, and have before. If you love books and anything to do with books, please, PLEASE visit these two locations. My next trip to Texas, I want to visit the flagship store, and when I do, you will know!! read more

Went in looking for a book on tai chi. A very friendly clerk showed me where it might be. Unfortunately, there were none, but if you're into yoga there are several. I also found many copies of Bill Clinton's life, about which I personally could care less, and several by Bishop Spong, who is certain St. Paul's thorn in the flesh was homosexuality. In short, there are plenty of books there, just brouse with more than a little care. Have what you want in mind before you go in would be my advice. read more

This is a good place to dump off books and items that nobody else will buy. I wouldn't take anything here if you think it's valuable at all, they pay very little but they will take just about any book or magazine you have lying around if donating to Goodwill for a tax deduction isn't your plan. I pretty much only come here when I have stuff that doesn't or won't sell on eBay or through other venues. They don't just carry books but movies, DVDs, music, comics, games, toys and the like as well as the usual book store additions of stationary, calendars and the like. A lot of what they buy does end up on the shelf but don't expect any bargains, as far as I can tell everything is cross checked against eBay or Amazon marketplace and priced accordingly. I've looked at a couple of items and they were priced at exactly the last sold price on eBay. read more

Half-Price Books is basically just a used bookstore, operated like a college bookstore. They do have a decent, ever-evolving selection of used books. If you're looking for a mainstream title at a good price, there's a good chance you'll find it here. The music selection is hit or miss. I've found a couple of rare records there priced at just a few dollars. They had no idea what they had. But at the same time, sometimes they'll think they have something that's worth a lot of money when it really isn't, so you might see a $20 price on a record that shouldn't cost more than $6. Don't bother trying to sell your stuff here. That's where the college bookstore operation kicks in. No matter what you take in, they won't offer you anything remotely close to what it's worth. Obviously, businesses need to make a profit. But frankly, if you try to sell at Half-Price Books, prepare to be insulted. You'd do just as well donating your items to charity and declaring them on your taxes. read more

Lets be honest, I don't read. I use Half Price Books as my go to place for used DVDS. The regular price for the average movie is $3.99. I have been to 3 actual locations and all 3 carried a good sized selection as well. A real plus is that they buy some seriously old/obscure movie titles so you are likely to find some real true favorites. This is especially true when looking for IFC/Sundance films. But the trick is to check in often. Things are bought and sold in a blink of an eye sometimes. I've even seen parking lot deals go down before sellers even reach the store. Weird but true. But as an example of older/obscure, I recently purchased "Kentucky Fried Movie". And I have been looking for that for like ever. Aside from older dvds they carry old cds at a good price, toy collectibles, old video/computer games, kids stuff and hey BOOKS! Give the store a gander. read more

This store has greatly exceeded my expectations, particularly the employee named Richard. Ive been searching for a book for several months, randomly checking in at Half Price Books to see if they have it. This time, there was a worker standing in the section I was in so I decided to asked if he has seen that book. He searched the shelf, the database, called the other store in Lexington and eventually gave me the option to have it sent to my house from a store out of state. Richard went above and beyond what I asked. He was so polite and helpful. He said if it arrived as a paperback (I wanted hardcover) I could bring it to the store and they would sort it out. Staff is extremely nice and always willing to help if you ask. I brought in over 50+ VHS tapes and a couple of books and a record and got 8$ for the lot. I did have to wait over an hour to get that. I really didn't mind that i only got 8$ its the fact i had to wait an hour to get it. read more

I enjoy coming here to look through the graphic novels and find a new deal on something new. This location also has great deals on CDs, especially the clearance area where they are only 1 dollar. Unless you want to receive next-to-nothing for your old books, etc., avoid this place. They will take advantage of you and to top it all off, the employees are unhelpful, to say the least. A few are friendly but many, including the guy who runs this location, are pretentious and very inefficient. One more thing, don't believe for a second that anything in this store is "half price". That is merely a technique they use to get your foot in the door and take advantage of you. They do not sell things at half price. That is absolutly a lie. So, right off the bat, the very first thing about this business you'll notice is untrue. The very name is a clever, however inaccurate, marketing ploy.
