If I could give more than five stars I would. I left this place feeling like a million bucks without having to spend a million on my hair. I have been to some of the highest rated salons in the triangle (Douglas Carroll -where the top stylist did my hair, Sam and Bills -near Cameron Village, and Rock Paper Scissors- Downtown Durham). Since I quit my job to be a stay at home mom, I can't afford to spend $$$$ on my hair anymore. I needed to find a place that was reasonable with talent and hopefully a group of hair dressers that treated me like a person and not just a customer. I found that and more. Hairplay is a group of the nicest and most talented women. The salon itself is adorable and not over the top! It's very welcoming. Joy, the owner, did my hair and she is fabulous. Upon booking my appointment she blocked off plenty of time for just me. I've been to places before where I was one of three clients being thrown around. Here I felt like it was all about me and my hair! Joy is an amazing hair artist. She got my color EXACTLY how I wanted it and made it look so much healthier. I lost a lot of hair after my pregnancy and it was looking rough...but now it looks beautiful again! The rest of the ladies are fabulous too. Paula did my hair in 2011 for my bridal shoot & wedding and I received so many compliments and people asking me who did it so they could go to her for their wedding hair style. I was out running errands the other day and thought I would pop in to get a trim, thinking perhaps finally I could find a good salon in Roxboro to frequent. Hairplay has super cute decor, and when I stepped inside it seemed to be doing a good business. I sat down and expected someone would say something to me - I didn't want to jump in on any of the conversations the ladies seemed to be having with their clients and interrupt! Five minutes went by... ten... then fifteen. No one greeted me. No one said "sorry, we're booked today!" or "we'll be with you in a few". I think - I THINK - one of the girls might have made very, very brief eye contact with me on her way out to have a smoke with one of the other ladies working there. But seriously, I was in there for a while, just patiently sitting, looking around, texting friends occasionally.. and no one said a word to me! Seriously, if walk-ins aren't welcome, girls, maybe you should scrape off the big "WALK INS WELCOME" decal you have stuck to your door, hmm? read more

I was not happy about my experience at this place. I had an appointment for 3:00 and was kept waiting for 30 minutes. I was extremely upset about that. The whole time I was there I didn't see any of the employees sweep up the hair on the floor. The person doing my hair blew hair all over my pocketbook. This was my first and last visit to this place. I would not recommend this place at all!! read more

I've always heard great things about Hairplay, and I was referred to Amanda recently by some of my friends. I am very satisfied with my haircut! I have long thick hair and do use heat styling products so naturally my hair has damage. Anywhere else I have been they have tried to cut my hair to my shoulders to get rid of all the damage, but Amanda gave me the exact length and layering I wanted, and my hair is refreshed just as a wanted. Also, any other salon I have been to they have either shampooed my hair and "gave up" while drying and sent me out with damp, unstyled hair (but still charged me for styling) or didn't even shampoo it because there was a ridiculous "long hair drying charge" and instead used a spray bottle as if I was some disobedient cat! Amanda gave me a great shampoo, cut a little length, then FULLY dried and straightened my hair before cutting the layers. Needless to say, I am pretty sure I have finally found my hair stylist! The salon itself is very clean, bright, and Roxboro is a small town so if you are from here, you probably know someone working in there. :) read more

I've been looking for a place for me and my wild thick hair to call home for a while and I've finally found it here and especially with Meredith. She is the sweetest most kind person I've ever known and manages my crazy hair to boot. I'm one of those people that likes to change their hair as often as they change their mind and Meredith always talks me through the pros and cons of each decision I make. She is very helpful and informative about how each color and cut is going to look on my hair and what the damage or other effects might be. I've been coming to Meredith since 2012 and have never felt more welcome in a salon than I have at Hairplay! Every time I walk in the door whoever is working stops to say hi and ask how I'm doing! I have always been overly satisfied with both atmosphere and services every time I leave. My review of Hairplay pertains to it's staff and their behavior, not to the work they do. First, let me say that the person who cuts my hair has done so for years, and does a great job. I like her very much, and she always behaves in a professional manner. As to the rest of the staff, they contribute to an unprofessional, chaotic, loud, messy atmosphere. They discuss their tea party politics loudly, whether or not customers are present, and they gossip with each other, often over the customer's head. When I go for a haircut, I would like to be able to think straight, and to enjoy a reasonably peaceful atmosphere, but this is not it, and because I like my haircutter, I put up with it. But these people should be reminded that so-called professionals in a public place should NEVER discuss politics, religion, relationships and their private lives...and here, they do all of these. read more
