They are truly the best! 1. Appointment is necessary. 2. Hair cut is done with precision, professionalism in a clean, nice environment. Very polite, listens to you, do not rush you and the end result is better than you expected. If you have fine, straight and long hair, they are especially good at dealing with such hair type. 3. Price is reasonable (about ~$100) for long hair. Ask for Young Kim, she is fabulous! I always see her and I have been coming here for over 2 years. They are also personable and genuinely nice. I had some unfortunate coloring/highlight from a year before and she blended it and cut it really nicely. 4. Good product recommendations, but does not actually try to sell you if you aren't interested, which is rare and awesome. All in all, highly recommend. Especially if you are Asian and have long hair! read more

I have been coming to Hair Mode for over 20 years! Young did an impeccable job for my wedding hair and make-up many years ago and I have continued to come for regular hair cuts since. There's nobody else in the DMV who I trust to cut my hair, given the specific blunt cut that I ask for. Young is so meticulous and exacting with her hair cuts and goes above and beyond every time, checking and rechecking the cut. It continues to look like a fresh cut even as it grows out. She does the BEST job!! Young is the consummate professional and has the loveliest and kind personality to boot. She is simply amazing all around!! read more

Updated review. They were great the first few times I went but also just got a straight forward long haircut. I went back recently for a shorter/mid length one and got the worst haircut ever. They just aren't very good at designing and customizing the hairstyle requested to look good on you. Won't be back read more

I can't say enough great things about Young and her team! I've come here a few times over the years and they always exceed my expectations. She's a color mixing genius and she really understands how to handle tough brassy Asian hair that can require a ton of lightening. She and her team work with a lot of care and incorporate hair treatments in the process as well. She also gives great advice on how to maintain hair health afterwards so you stay happy with your results for a long time. You can really feel the care and consideration she has for her clients! Highly recommend for any of your coloring or styling needs! read more

Young did an amazing job on my hair! It has been six months since my last haircut due to quarantine, and she handled my hair very well. Even though my hair was very damaged from past hair dyes, she was still able to do the V-Shape that I requested! Masks were used at all times, and a lot of safety precautions were taken due to COVID-19. I highly recommend this salon for your hair needs! read more

Ms. Young did a fantastic job cutting my boyfriend's long hair (almost a man bun). It was a multi step process: she did a cut with dry hair, washed it and cut it wet, and then blow dried it and did a final touch up cut. This was the most comprehensive men's haircut I've ever seen, which just shows how skilled she is! We brought in several photos (Bradley Cooper long layered hair look) and she did a great job copying the look. She checked in throughout the process and was open to feedback as she went. It felt like a collaborative process which we really appreciated. If you're looking for a men's styled haircut with layers, I can't recommend Ms. Young enough! We will definitely be returning. read more

Came to Hair Mode to get a haircut with my mom and sister. Ms Young did not disappoint. I have long straight hair and went to get a trim, relayer, and bangs retrimmed. I love that Ms Young asks how I like the cut and fixes my bangs to my liking. She is very quick but efficient with her cuts :) read more

The best place to get your hair cut in Northern VA! I have only gone to Mrs. Young and highly recommend her! I have gone to numerous people in this area and she is the one person who cuts my hair how I ask her too. She's very thoughtful to ask for photos of the hairstyle I'm hoping for, and also provides good insight and suggestions into how to make some changes for the hairstyle to better fit my face. She also provides good recommendations for hair care. You can usually book a reservation in 1-2 weeks in advance as well! Love Mrs. Young and will always be going to her while I'm here in nova! read more

I've gotten my haircut here twice by Young and she is the only person I'll trust to cut my hair. She's always making sure I get the haircut I'm looking for and even takes a picture of exactly what I want my haircut to look like!! I have long hair so haircuts typically cost me $65 (before tip). read more

I had grown out my hair during the pandemic and wanted to take the opportunity to change my hairstyle. Before the pandemic, I had gone to Young for men's haircuts and consistently received compliments on my hair. The trifecta of cost ($30 male haircut), quality, and delivery of service offers the biggest bang for the smallest buck. Hair Mode is my most trusted and reliable salon for the last 3 years. The storefront makes you feel at home and there's a sign that states 'Walk-Ins Welcomed!' so it's very easy to grab a hair session. These two stylists never fail to disappoint and go the extra length for your personal care & satisfaction. I bring a picture to support my request each visit. And without fail, Jessica meticulously crafts my thick hair and delivers every time. On visits where I wasn't sure, she would offer constructive feedback and recommendations based on face shape, hair texture, and/or popular trends. I've had a few misses regarding my aesthetic, but that was due to my poor judgment or stubbornness. The hair? Always on point. Can't thank you enough Jessica. read more

I do NOT recommend Young for men's cuts. My husband usually goes to Jessica but the last two times he's made appointments with her, Young shows up to cut his hair instead. This time around, she cut a gaping hole into my husband's hair. There was literally a hole on the side of his head. I'm not sure if she wasn't paying attention or if she just has no idea how to cut men's hair. She clearly did not consider the direction of natural hair growth/ hair lines. Now, it's even worse as it's growing out and he is dealing with hair growth that sticks straight out. I'm adding photos but be aware- it looks much worse in person. I would skip this place unless you like having holes on your head. Not to mention, he paid over $40 for this botched cut. read more

This place is my God-send. I had been looking for a hair stylist who could simply do what I asked for and in the last 4 years of living in nova, I had never had an experience where I was really truly happy with the end result. Young is amazingly talented, and everyone else at the salon is super nice and friendly! I have really thick hair and usually keep it long, but I wanted to do something drastic: go for an asymmetrical bob (one side longer than the other). I was nervous to do something so dramatic at a place I had never been to, but I trusted the other bob pics I saw, and I'm so glad I did. Let me just say: I LOVE HER AND I'M NEVER GOING ANYWHERE ELSE EVER. I recommend her to everyone I talk to. I showed her a couple of pics of what I wanted, she took a picture on her own phone, and kept it front of us against the mirror the whole time to reference. You can tell she knows how to work with *YOUR* hair specifically to maneuver it, so that it ends up looking like the inspiration. That's how I knew that she really is an expert. Thank you, Young I will be back soon for a trim!! read more

12-year update: Still my favorite place for a haircut. I've been grateful to be her client. I've tried four other hairstylists over the last 12 years (twice at Le Barbiere - Saigon, once in Orange County, CA, another in Annandale). I keep coming back here. Young has accommodated various hair styles I've had from my college years through now. It's always a great job. She's also sometimes my therapist while I'm in her chair. read more

I've been coming to Hair Mode since 2010. Even though, I go get my hair done once or twice a year from Ms.Kim, she remembers my style and she knows exactly what hair style you want. She will give you the best hair cut, hair coloring, perm and anything else you can think of to get done on your hair. In 2012, I got my hair and make up done on my wedding day. Ms.Kim made me so beautiful. This is my #1 "go to" hair salon. And Ms.Kim has made me her regular customer. Always friendly and feels comfortable getting hair/make up done by Ms.Kim. I wouldn't go anywhere else to get my hair done. Every time I get my hair done here, it looks so nice and always the way I want it done. Don't wait and look for hair salon any longer to get your hair done. Just book an appointment at Hair Mode with Ms. Young Kim! read more

Definitely a pleasant experience and the staff were very accommodating. I was extremely late to my appointment, but even then, there was no hesitation to seat and cut my hair. Jessica did my hair, and it's been about 3 days now. Overall, I am satisfied with my hair, probably the best version of two block cut I've had in the states. It is important to note that it's definitely more pricey here than I'm used to, at a base of $30 for a men's cut - I'm used to paying $20 or $25 with tip. Anyway, I do think I'll come back here unless there's a better recommendation. read more

Jessica is gem -- she's detailed, thorough and skilled at cutting hair. Such a rare find these days. She can color, too! She wants to know exactly what you want to achieve in her chair. Jessica will work with your hair goals, not just for your present visit but she considers what you're working towards in the next few months with your hair. If there is time, she will take the time to show the styling options for your hair and provide you with styling tips. I love that She doesn't try to sell you on any products! Realized I've been coming to Mrs. Young for over 5 years and never written a review. All I can say is if you're asian, want a stylist who can actually understand your hair type, or (for the guys out there) have a barber your satisfied with but not thrilled with. Give Mrs.Young a call, she can help you get whatever asian hair style you're striving for or tell you it's not meant to be (kindly). Because (let's be real) anyone can "cut asian hair" shit even I can, does that mean I'm any good? Def not. But Mrs.Young is :) The entire staff is SUPER friendly, and makes you feel right at home. None of that uppity "too good for you"ook an appointment, you won't regret it! read more

I was in need of an updo for a formal wedding and was looking for something more reasonably priced in NoVa. I called and was set up with Young, who was extremely pleasant and enthusiastic on the phone. She had no problem getting me an early appointment and even texted me her phone number so I could send her pictures of what my hair looked like and what ideas I had. When it came to the day of the appointment, I got a warm greeting from her and the rest of the shop and we got to work. She performed magic on my hair and went above and beyond. She gave me a really beautiful, intricate hairstyle that I was in love with and it was a hit! She's very detail oriented and doesn't miss a hair (literally). My hairstyle stayed out for well over 12 hours! I am very happy with the choice I made to come here and I'd come back if I'm in need in this area again. read more

Updated review After I left my review. Young reaches out and ask if I could come in so she can make it right. Due to my experience I don't feel comfortable coming back. However I truly appreciate that she cares and sincerely want to make up for it. I would give 4 stars for customer service. But I have to give 3 stars since I can't over look for the hair cut I had. I came here based on the reviews. Pretty disappointed. The place looks outdated. But since Young asked me everything as if I'm a hair stylist. I thought I came here to trust on someone 's experience to help me look good. I told her what style of hair I want. And she asked if I want layers , or no layers and add texture. The only reason I know what to answer her because I traveled and lived in big cities. I heard some of my hair stylist told me one or two of these. Otherwise I wouldn't have any glue. She chop my hair pretty fast. Not cut. Cause I see many hair stylist did before. They cut fast but they look where needed to cut. Not like young. She cut whatever her scissor was near. I could tell by my eyes that she cut some place more and other place less. That is why my hair pretty uneven . Very choppy. My heart sink when I saw that. I already know my hair would suffer and I would never return here. But I'm always kinda playing nice. Even in my heard I wanted to cry for my hair cause it was ugly. But I try to be diplomatic about the whole thing. Just tell myself I won't return here ever again. If you are someone want a smooth and nice hair cut. I would suggest to stay away. These pic I took right after I left the hair salon. I have never had hair cut and my hair look dry and uneven like this. read more

I got my hair done by Ms. Young Kim and I love it! I haven't gotten a haircut since before the pandemic, so it was really nice to shed a few inches and add some layers/style. The person who has been cutting my hair since I was little moved, so I had to do research to find a new go-to salon and chose Hair Mode. I'm so happy I did. Young-Eun trimmed my fringes and chopped 6 inches off my hair: a much needed chop. Her attention to detail was amazing and took her time to make sure everything was perfect. She's also warm, super sweet and really cares about her craft. She doesn't try to sell me on any additional services which is also wonderful! Not to mention, her salon is super clean and she also has a certificate to show she can conduct her business with the necessary precautions against COVID-19. I have been stuck with the same style for years because my hair is extremely thick and hard. I've been going here for several years now and Young is pretty familiar with my haircut and i would say after all this time, we've even become friends. I truly believe she tries to give the best service to her clients and really isn't just looking for a quick buck. She'll frequently tell me all the extra special trainings she takes to learn new techniques and get better at her craft, which I don't think many other stylists do. This is even after years and years of working as a hair stylist. In regards to some of the negative reviews, I think with anyone in life, sometimes communication gets lost and there are misunderstandings. However, if you do take the time to try and understand her hair process or what type of cut you're getting, I think she'll really try to do her best to give you top notch service. I highly recommend her but you should also make clear what you're getting and whether the service she's giving is what you want. read more

I have been wanting to get a digital perm for about three years. So, I went into a salon in downtown DC and asked them if they'd perm my hair. The stylist told me he'd rather color it because it's faster and makes him more money. No thanks!! On recommendation through the Korean (American) grapevine, I took the bus to Annandale and let Young curl me up. Perming hair is no joke, but Young knows exactly what she's doing. She's clearly an expert (read: hair scientist/artist). Highly recommended! I will never let anyone else touch my hair in DC. read more

AMAZING! Let me start off by saying that I have quite damaged hair after about 4 years of getting Japanese straight perms and using heat everyday. I was nervous to even think about getting a perm because I was afraid of more damage. At Hair Mode they were extremely careful around damaged areas of my hair, and meticulously worked to give me EXACTLY what I wanted and to prevent any further damage from occurring. The end result is exactly what I asked for and they were all very communicative with me throughout my time there. I highly recommend them for any of your hair care needs and they give AMAZING perms. They all have quite a bit of experience and knowledge regarding perms, and make sure to explain exactly what is happening when you get a perm. I have attached a before and after picture after getting a regular perm. Thank you so much Young Kim! read more

They were nice and polite when I went two months ago to get my hair cut and root touch up. However, my second time experience was highly disappointing. They are rude and ungrateful; the owner young barely said thanks when I paid her via venmo. I don't even know why I even tipped her. The other lady Jessica? comes off super fake and rude as well.
