I don't know if that would fly in a country where Spanish is the official language (or one of the official languages), but we're in Canada, so here we are. I actually find it kinda funny, but for the rest of my review I'll just refer to it as "the store" because I don't want any abuelas upset with me, lol. So the store is a Mexican grocery store. They sell mostly shelf-stable goods, but have a few refrigerated items. They have a good selection of Mexican candies, including 3 different flavours of Pulparindo! They didn't have Extra Hot though :( I love the sweet, sour and spicy flavours of Mexican candies! The candies I looked at all had their "best before" dates in the future, which I liked, and means they have good turnover of merchandise. I find that many international grocery stores have products past their "best before" dates, but I didn't see that at this store. There's a sign in the window that advertises they also sell prepared foods, but no prices. They had lots of dried peppers, and they also had tortillas. Oh and lots of sauces. There are not a lot of Latin American grocery stores in Ottawa, so I'm happy to see this store open up. The store opened in 2021. The owner of the store also owns 2 restaurants nearby: Margarita, and Mona's Taqueria. Staff were friendly and courteous. Street parking only.

There's a selection of dried chilies in the front and a large selection of various items for the pantry. From beans, chilies, spices, coconut milk, hot sauces, etc There's also a bunch of snacks that I've probably never tried. There's a freezer with some nice frozen goods. I walked out with a few tamales to try. Check it out if you're in the area!

The Unrefined Olive is definitely not one of those standard, gimmicky shops. It is owned by a husband and wife team who are beyond passionate about food, and the products which they sell. The olive oils here are checked, and then double checked, for quality. Having partaken in guided olive oil tastings in the past, and I went into this shop thinking I knew a lot about olive oils. I ended up learning so much more from the owner and realizing how much more there is to learn! I am IN LOVE with the basil olive oil here. Having dinner guests and want to look like a professional chef? Just pour some infused olive oil on top of what you are serving. Want to make pizza night "fancy pizza night"? Drizzle some basil olive oil on top. Oh, and your salads will never be the same. The bottles here are also really nice looking and would make great gifts. Who am I kidding...I plan to keep mine all for myself ;-).

High tables neatly stacked with round stainless steel containers - holding either olive oil or vinegar. What's fun about this is - you can taste test! The staff is knowledgeable. They explain how the store works, what the general groupings are - and if you ask, will also give recommendations. We ended up with a while balsamic vinegar infused with pear - which, we are told, is wonderful on salad even without an oil. There are many many choices. Go check it out. This is (to me) a bit of a gourmet heaven - so go in with the right mindset for prices. (What I'm telling you: It's not inexpensive - but I think based on the product and service that it's not out of the realm of reality either.) Besides the Olive Oil and Vinegar, they have a small selection of other high quality cooking oils. Might be good to go in with a bit of a plan - for example - know that you are looking for an oil for dipping bread... or for salad... or for cooking - otherwise you may have a hard time making a choice. It was a tiny bit soggy by the time we drove home but still really good. I like the sauce a lot, and the portion is great for the price. It comes with a small side of pickled daikon, but it wasn't that pickled - could be better but a minor detail overall. The lady at the cashier was also super nice. The assortment of groceries looked really good too. They carry a lot of Korean food that I'm not sure where else you would find in Ottawa, and a few Japanese items as well.

You can order ahead or pick from the prepared food on the right of the cashier. I only wish the sweet and spicy sauce was spicier (it was very very mild to us) but they recently added a new soy & chili flavour that can scale up on the spice. It wasn't greasy and probably one of the better places for KFC by Ottawa standards. TIP: if you're getting take out and worried about the sauce making the chicken soft while you drive home, you can ask for the sauce on the side! They have plenty of Korean ingredients, snacks, noodles and a killer homemade kimchi that I believe is freshest on Fridays. There isn't much fresh produce but they do have lots of meats. Prices are a bit higher here but they're well stocked. The location is very clean and the staff are friendly. There's only street parking in front of the store but you can park in the lot across the street where the LCBO is.

What a cool store that I never knew existed! Hungry Ninja sells primarily imported snacks from Asia…read moresuch as chips, candies, and ramen, but they also sell Asian groceries, such as sauces, oils, vinegars, miso, kimchi and the sorts. They have the largest selection of exotic KitKats I've seen here in Ottawa. They sell bags for $6.99, which depending on the flavour have 9-14 mini bars. They also sell individual bars for $0.99 each. So you can try one before committing to an entire bag. They also have a large selection of Kracie Popin' Cooking' DIY candy kits! They are $5.99-$6.99 which is about half the price of places like Sugar Mountain and Sweet Escape Candy Emporium. Sure, you don't get the nostalgic candy store vibe here, but you save $4-$6 per kit. My little nieces are addicted to these kits, so I've scoured the city for these, lol. If you are a mochi-lover, they have a lot of mochi from Japan. Many grocery stores only carry mochi from Taiwan (and specifically the brand Royal Family), so if you want something different, you can check out the variety here. They sell Wong's Ice Cream (from Toronto)! This brand sells Asian-inspired flavours like Vietnamese Coffee, Thai Milk Tea, and Korean Banana Milk. In addition to ice cream, they sell other frozen goods too, like Korean dumplings, croquettes, and Tteokbokki. They have some bubble tea plushies at the back, as well as those happy/sad reversible octopus plushies. Staff pretty much leave you alone to browse. They were efficient at checkout. They are located in a strip mall. There's free parking in the strip mall parking lot. I definitely recommend checking out Hungry Ninja if you like imported Asian snacks :)

Worst customer service ever. I placed multiple orders over the last year, each well over $100. The…read moreshipping alone was 1/3 the cost of the order, however because they have unique items I can't get in my city I had no problem paying for it. When I received the last two orders (both of which were placed in September), I noticed that multiple bags had expiry dates of September and October of the same year. They were meant to be Christmas gifts for the Healthcare Workers at the Hospital where I work, so obviously they would be expired by then. There was no mention of the expiry date online on any of the items I purchased, nor did they mention anything before they sent me the items. The first time I contacted them they told me to send a photo of the items and I would receive a refund. I did this, but then I was told I would have to return the items (and pay for the shipping myself), show them a photo of the receipt and then they would issue me a credit for that amount. ...What??? Why would I have to pay for shipping AGAIN after paying a total of $60 the first time? What kind of business sells edible products that expire within weeks of shipment? This is mind boggling to me. I have told potential customers about my experience and will share this review in the hopes that others don't end up having to go through the same thing when they go to purchase stocking stuffers or Christmas gifts. There is something not right about the fact that this place is selling perishable food items without being transparent about the expiry dates.

This…read moretiny store located in the Market Building of the Byward Market should be a definite stop for anyone looking to bring home Canadian goods, whether you are a foreigner or Canadian. Jammed into every shelf and corner and carousel display of this store are goodies native to Canada. You won't find cheap souvenir T shirts here but items like local honey from numerous provinces, Saskatchewan jams, bison pate, Ice wine flavored teas--a truly dazzling assortment of authentic Canadian goods, for every budget, and from the familiar to the different. If your loved ones have had enough of maple, impress them with Ice-wine syrup then. Unlike the Ottawa duty free shop, which only has the cheaper version, Canada in a Basket has the premium one also. It must be good since I bought it and sis hasn't shared any with me. If you have an OCD friend you need relief from for a few hours, bring them here and let your buddy pore through what seems like an endless array of items, food items, jewelry, clothing etc. While I I don't envy the proprietor at inventory time, I am grateful she took the time to amass such an array of uniquely wonderful items. Canada in a Basket will even customize a basket for you and ship it, hence the name. Seriously, there was so much here, I was actually getting dizzy just looking at a few shelves of jams, and I hadn't even ventured to the Byward Market bars prior. You don't need to agonize over the meager pickings at the airport duty free shop. Come to this fun place to shop for Canadian souvenirs.
