After my own experiences and those of friends of mine, I'm hereby leaving this statement in the comment section as a warning as well as a reference for all Asians who intend to visit this place.
It's indeed a fantastic restaurant with great food and great atmosphere. I've visited twice, both of which didn't disappoint me. The choices might be limited but each dish is well prepared. The price is also considerably acceptable. But I would carry on my decision to give only one star after my second visit. The reason is simple - I was surely discriminated during the service.
As an Asian with a great obsession with Japanese food, I've visited an uncountable amount of Japanese restaurants overseas. From the Ramen restaurant in Hong Kong to the sushi bar in London, the first standard for me to choose a Japanese restaurant is authenticity. But even neglecting the rating and comments, I've NEVER received any disappointing service from all these experiences before, until this one.
I'm able to communicate in Japanese. At least ordering food would not be a big problem for me and I'm always willing to do so as a respect to the cooks and other staffs. But I didn't do it here even for once. A waitress (I want to stress out the singularity because there's indeed only one waitress who leaves me this kind of impression. My second experience with another waitress was fantastic.) kept showing me her face of reluctance from the moment I stepped in. She had ignored me several times when I made a clear signal that I intended to order/pay by raising my hands and slightly calling out the phrase 'すみませ/Entschuldigung'. But all these signals were deliberately ignored by her. It was only after a long wait that I finally received the service, with her face of reluctance and ignorance all over again. She was not that busy at all because from where I sat, I could witness all of these.
A warm farewell did make me better later, but it only happened after I tipped, even all the guests received a better service and at least one smile except me, the only non-Japanese Asian sitting in that room. Not to mention that she hit me against my elbows accidentally(?) several times without saying a single Sorry when she wanted to serve the desk next to me during my second visit.
I'm not sure if you would take any further action to respond to my statement, and I have no expectation of an apology from her. Nor would I leave a promise like 'I would never visit this place next time' because she cannot represent other staffs, who didn't leave any bad impression but instead were quite patient with my questions.
We're all foreigners who temporary settle in this country on our own purpose. And I'm sure none of us would avoid some bad memories of discrimination. Some regard that discrimination is impossible among Asians or people from the same race, from the same religion or even from the same country. This is simply incorrect. What discrimination really means, is treating someone differently, only because he/she is in some certain way different from you. I'm not a Japanese and I'm almost on my own all the time during the meal in quiet and relaxation. I might tip whoever serve me no matter how badly I was treated. But it doesn't mean I don't deserve a nicer service and respects.
I didn't regard it as a big problem at the very first beginning and I assumed that her behaviors were simply out of inattention. But after a couple of friends of mine shared their experiences with me today, we all agreed that she did it on purpose. I think whoever takes charge of this restaurant with great quality should at least be aware that - you have a waitress who treated non-Japanese Asian poorly and disrespectfully.
Discrimination against any certain group of people is imbecilic, shameful and pathetic. read more
