We found Ixi'im inside of one of the most beautiful hotels in the world, Chablè. It is 40 minutes driving from Merida, you can ask your Hotel for transportation. It worths it... the place is a dream!!!! The food is amazing, is a little expensive, but believe me, every bite and drink you make, you will have a wonderful experience!!! We began with the Tequila of the house, the Restaurant has more than 3,000 tequilas, so we assumed that the House Tequila most be good, and it was!! The best tequila I ever drink in my life!!!!! Then, about the menu, you can ask for Menu Degustación that is like a little taste of everything of the menu in small portions or by the Menu... we have both, for the adults the Degustación, and for the children the Menu. The children's Menu is very small, but it seems that it is because the restaurant is more consider like a romantic destination, but the children had a delicious meal and have a wonderful time running around the amazing gardens.

There is also a brief walking tour and intro to the restaurant and hotel, although as a restaurant guest you are not allowed to wander around the grounds, for the privacy of the hotel guests (it does cost over $1500/nt!). The restaurant itself is also very stunning. If you're a tequila lover, you'll be in heaven, as they have thousands of bottles of tequila, over the decades. Not sure if all are tequila or some mezcal, but you get the picture. The dining ambiance is great. Sitting outside, you overlook the amazing hacienda gardens. Inside, there are floor to ceiling windows, and a very romantic mood in the evening. Service is excellent, can't fault it. Food is great. Menu is limited, but every dish is unique. I highly recommend ordering the lechon (suckling pig) - truly spectacular. In fact, its probably big enough to share between two, and just order separate appetisers. The venison risotto was recommended by the waiter (chef's signature?). While it was executed perfectly and delicious, it didn't have a huge "wow" factor. Still, if you like risottos, you'll have an amazing dish. For dessert, the chocolate tamale sounds interesting, but really it is just a spin on a chocolate brownie with ice cream. Delicious and well executed, but sounded more exotic than it actually was. The only blot was the pricing of water. Charging approximately 240 pesos for a half bottle of mineral water, is just price gouging in my opinion. The drive into the hacienda is also through some bumpy roads, and a very poor village. So if you come for dinner (from outside the hotel), be prepared for a somewhat scary drive/ride back. We dined at the well-celebrated Pujol in Mexico City; if given the choice, we'd rather come back to Ixi'im again instead.

Outside there is a beautiful water garden with almost an oriental feel. The decorations are beautiful, the ambience is upscale but casual. The service is exceptional. The food is excellent. Their food is Mayan fusion, serving traditional regional dishes with a modern flair. I had the pavo en escabeche indio (turkey with "pickled" onion). They also have great appetizers and some unusual but delicious desserts. I got some pictures off their Facebook page and posted them, most of which have the name of the dish on the picture itself. There is a lady and making fresh tortillas to one side of the restaurant next to their artisan bread bakery. If you want to take in some local flavor in an elegant atmosphere this is the place! Reservations are recommended. Bathrooms are very well maintained. Family friendly. Good for groups. Credit cards or cash accepted.

And I'm glad that we stepped in. We had an amazing dinner. I ordered enchiladas and I forget what my husband had. But I liked them because they tasted like the Mexican enchiladas that I'm used to. I got them with a red salsa, that wasn't too spicy, but it was good. The food in Merida is very different and it was nice to get back to some familiar flavors. We liked this place so much that we came back for breakfast the next day. Again, the meal was quite good and filling and had we come earlier in the week, we would have returned, however, there were other corners and interesting places to checkout. While there the service was very good. They weren't full. They had a cute little stand onto which I could put my purse. They also had an interesting looking bar. We did have some chips with three different salsas. Each was interesting. I also believe that we had the guacamole which was quite good and tomato-less. I would recommend this place for a good meal for breakfast or dinner.

TLDR: Overpriced AND they pressure you to tip - worst experience in Merida so far…read more I never write reviews, but our experience here was so poor that it warrants me warning others. Overall the food was decent, but drastically overpriced compared to the numerous other options in Merida. But the worst thing about Piñuela is the service. Our waiter was never to be found, and took forever to get us basic things like water and napkins.  In fact, our dishes were sitting on the pass for so long that another waiter ended up bringing us our food. All 5 dishes all at once of course. Finally, as other reviews have mentioned they tried to sneak in a 15% tip to the bill total. I asked about it and the waiter suggested it was "optional". He then waited at our table until I paid, which was tremendously awkward. It's obvious he was trying to pressure/guilt us into paying the full tip. The management at the restaurant clearly cares nothing about the experience of its customers. Please from my mistake and don't bother with Piñuela.

Located near the historical center of Merida, you'll find that the surrounding ambience to be a very colonial vibe. Parking is also easy in the many lots where it's basically 18 pesos a hour. We got the Combinado Vallisoletano with everything in it, which is a pretty large plate and easily serves two. Comes with 4 Pibihuas (2 cochinita and 2 lomitos), Longaniza Asada (A long and spicy sausage), Carne Ahumada (Diced meat that goes with the tortillas), and a few other sides. Not a bad price and works well as something to munch on. IMO their best item is the Pibihua, or the stuffed shell with meat. Very crunchy on the outside and filled with meaty pork loin or pulled pork, both are very good. Overall a good experience.

Taqueria La Lupita - Congratulations on your victory! To the uninitiated, let's spend a moment on discussing the regionally renowned Cochinita Pibil. This is a slow-cooked pork dish, made as a hybrid of traditional Mayan and more modern New World techniques, much as its name is a hybrid of Spanish (cochinta = little pig) and Mayan (pib = pit-cooked) itself. Traditionally it's cooked while wrapped in banana leaves, flavored with spices (especially achiote) and left in an underground pit oven for a LONG time. When done properly, it's a juicy, tangy, savory, delight that can go in a taco, a torta, or whatever you fancy. Taqueria La Lupita does serious volumes of business, and a highlight is certainly their cochinita pibil. But, they are more than a one-trick caballo. During our extended stay, we visited TLL several times, and got to try both form factors (tacos, salbutes, panuchos, tortas, polcan) as well as meats (cochinita pibil, relleno negro, lechon al horno, escabeche). We still couldn't try everything, and certainly not every combination. But we sure loved our experience throughout, even for the items that were not notable winners. This place is popular for all the right reasons: Deliciousness, variety, service, value, experience. Even when it was a bit busy, they have a lot of tables, and we had really good service there. Don't get discouraged by a little wait time...it's the best option we found in Santiago Plaza/Market. Some places in Mèrida may have struggled to maintain their experience after being highlighted by Netflix or Youtube programs, but Taqueria La Lupita has stayed true, and we couldn't have been more delighted by our visits there. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
