Booking: I booked online prior to arrival with recommendations from Hotel Solar de Animas. The hotel said reservations not required but recommended reservation so that we got a spot at the time we wanted. The hotel recommended the Jose Cuervo Experience. I booked that, it was $30 US per person. I was shocked they were open on Christmas Day! Limited hours of 12-4. I did request tour in English. I booked 2pm. Arrival: we arrived 15 minutes early at 1:45pm and glad we did arrive early because I was told English tours are only 1pm and 3pm and our tour was Spanish only. We got our arm bands and said we would return at 3pm. I was a bit unhappy since the website did not mention that online, but oh well, went to explore Tequila some more. We arrived 10 minutes early and walked around. We ended up waiting around, don't come too early once you have your arm bands, there is not much to see prior to tour start time. Tour: there is a video of the history of the distillery and some marketing to promote the hotel and other businesses and then you get greeted by your tour guide. Diego was our tour guide. Diego did a great job and a nice sense of humor. We enjoyed learning about the process of making tequila. Seeing the agave in raw form to the smoking to distillation to maturing. Being able to smell all the processes and then tasting was very nice through the tour... from the smoked agave heart (so unique) to the agave in pure form to the different aging stages. Because we paid for the Jose Cuervo experience (orange wrist band), we got a special tasting experience. We were taken to a private room with our tour guide and got to learn the proper way to bring out the flavors of tequila. I learned so much! Never thought breathing through nose vs mouth changes the taste. Holding the tequila in your mouth. Worth taking this tour to really learn and understand how to really enjoy tequila. .

Worth the travel!! Such a gorgeous place and lovely people. Tequila is worth it. The hangovers are not as bad if bought from the actual factory.

The tour overall was a great experience. From start to finish I learned quite a bit about the process and how the entire distillery is run. The only unfortunate part is you can be placed In a rather large group. Members of your random group can get obnoxiously loud, and hearing is almost impossible. Our tour guide was very informative, he thoroughly explained from start to finish the entire operation and how the distillery functions. There was plenty of opportunities for questions and the facility itself carries plenty of neat history with it. Definitely enjoyed how you are walked through each process in the manufacturing from start to finish. Last but not least, the tasting. At the very end of the tour, you are allotted as many samples as your dear liver can handle. The taste straight from the distillery is so smooth and enjoyable. Overall, great tour, definitely recommend if in the area.

It's been a while since I've been to Tequila - 13 years to be exact. Several people were visiting, including us, so a friend booked the tour here. Since I have something to compare it against, I found this tour just okay. It's in the heart of downtown, which is probably why it's such a popular spot, not to mention the name. However, I went to another tequilera away from town in the middle of agave fields and it blew this one away. I found that one way more informative and interactive. I would encourage people to explore options of tours before just settling on one they might be familiar with. I'll end by saying you'll have fun no matter where you go!

The obligatory tourist attraction when travelling thru Jalisco. The English tour is very well done and left me with a new appreciation for Jose Cuervo and 100% agave Tequila in general. The whole tour lasts about an hour or more and includes an instructive tasting of several tequilas, pure, blanco, reposado, anejo, and extra anejo. At the end of the tour there is a bar where you can order more booze or continue onto the next Tequileria. Andale!

I came here as part of a larger Tequila tour from Guadalajara. This is THE ORIGINAL Jose Cuervo distillery. I looooove drinking tequila, but seeing how they make tequila.... not that interesting. They have an intro video and then you get to walk through the distillery. You get to try cooked agave which was definitely very cool. They explain the different types of tequila from reposado to anejo. The most interesting part of the tour was when they let us try 50% concentrated tequila. The concentration is so high you can't buy it anywhere! I took a shot, but others on my tour were too afraid. It felt awesome! We also got a simple tasting at the end of our tour. But I'd recommend possibly doing the tasting tour instead. You get to go inside one of the rooms and drink from a nice glass ;)

If you're looking for the one responsible for your college-day black-outs, you've come to the right place. If you're looking to discover artisanal, quality tequila products you might want to venture elsewhere such as Don Roberto, La Cofradia, or Tres Mujares. The experience left me feeling like cattle in the sense that it was very rushed and lacked a personable touch. However, I can relate to the urge of discovering the people responsible for multiple hang-overs and dry heaving. After all, it's the strongest brand in the industry and who doesn't have a bottle from 10 years ago stashed deep in their garage with bottled up memories.

It doesn't really get better than being at the actual Jose Cuervo distillery. We took the Spanish tour as my sister speaks it, and we really didn't have time to wait another hour for the English one as it would have cut into our food & shopping time. (We were on a tour van from Guadalajara.) It was a really cool way to spend the day and learn about the different types and flavors of tequila. I was really surprised to see the raven in the cage at the end. We might have missed that part of the tour, but I still don't know why the raven is there. You get to taste cooked agave in addition to tasting the various tequilas. It's really like a yam which I had no idea! The tasting room is beautiful and has a fountain across the center. The gift shop has a ton of stuff, but I just wish the sizing in the women's shirts was better. So small! I went with a small men's shirt, and it fits just fine. I highly recommend coming here if you are anywhere near the vicinity or the state of Jalisco! It gave me a new appreciation for tequila (as I don't really drink it other than in margaritas) so I'm excited to try out new cocktails with it! Squirt (the grapefruit soda) is super popular in Mexico, and they mix it with tequila all the time. I decided to get a drink from the little stand that Jose Cuervo runs just inside the entrance, and I have no idea what was in my drink, but it was a fantastic fruity mixture! The bartender was generous with the tequila too so that was nice.

That said, even with those constraints, it was still a very cool and worthwhile experience. The tequila itself is absolutely delicious -- truly top-tier. The tasting pours were generous (definitely heavy-handed in the best way), which made it easy to fully appreciate the craftsmanship and complexity behind each expression. You can immediately tell how much care and tradition goes into their process. What was open gave us a glimpse into the fascinating history of Fortaleza, and the staff did a great job sharing the story behind the brand. The campus itself is beautiful, serene, and clearly special -- even partially closed, it left a strong impression and made us want to come back when everything is fully accessible. All in all, while the timing wasn't ideal, the quality of the tequila and the experience still shined through. This is a must-visit for tequila lovers, and we'll absolutely be back to see it in full once renovations are complete. See you soon, Fortaleza.

Guide Kim provided a fascinating, lively narrative throughout our visit. We started with a wonderful hike through the estate with Kim describing the cultivation of agave, the propagation of the plant and the critical role of jimadors. Our group got a closeup view of the extraction of juice from the cooked agave piñas and the bottling process--a mere six at a time! I now understand why Fortaleza is nearly impossible to find in our hometown of Chicago. Shout-out to Chris at the Map Room who encouraged us to book this tour! No tour is complete without a tasting; ours was held within Cava La Fortaleza, a hand-hewn cave equipped with a bar and tables. Without much fuss--unlike other distilleries--Kim guided us through samples of Fortaleza's blanco, reposado and anejo tequilas. Delicioso!

(Jose Cuervo is owned by Germans and Sauza is owned by Japanese). The tour starts at the central plaza of the town of Tequila. Be careful because a number of different tour operators will approach you and you really have to be specific that you want Orendain, not another brand. They start at ambiguous times, but generally around the noon hour. The English speaking tour guide provided a background to the history of the town as we were driven out in their barrel-shaped, fun, coach out to the factory. The Orendain tour demonstrated how agave cores are pressure-steamed, crushed, fermented and distilled. The tour was quite well explained and I felt quite enlightened. However, I recommend you do some reading about the history of the settlement of the town because it adds to the whole experience (it starts in the 1500's with bloody battles between the Spanish army and the indigenous led by a priest, and continues to the 20th century industrialization). The tequila tour ends at their store, where you get really good prices on the amazing bottles of tequila and liqueurs (tequila suffused with coffee, almonds, and apricots).

It was frustrating- we traveled from the US for this special birthday celebration and what was promised should have been delivered. No amount was deducted from the bill for any of this, Mickey couldn't care less once he had received the fee about anything else. Disappointing.
