    Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation

One of our vacations this year was to drive the entire length (469 miles) of the Blue Ridge…read moreParkway, starting in Cherokee, North Carolina and ending in Rockfish Gap, Virginia (near the entrance to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia). Unlike Shenandoah, which charges $30 for one week access for a private car, the Blue Ridge Parkway is free to drive. Unfortunately, the National Park Service's budget is insufficient to meet all of the programming and maintenance needs of the Parkway, and there is no dedicated source of funding from user fees. That's where the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation comes in. The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was funded in 1997, and is an official fundraising partner of the National Park Service. They provide support for initiatives along the entire 469-mile route, including historical and cultural preservation, environmental protection, visitor amenities, and education and outreach. For example, some more specific examples that we observed during our travels included, for instance: view-shed restoration (arborists oversee clearing of overgrown vegetation at viewpoints); traditional musician programming at the Blue Ridge Music Center; Mabry Mill complex repairs; Kids in Parks; and platform reconstruction at Mt. Pisgah. The Foundation has raised and implemented $22 million towards Parkway initiatives and programming since 1997. Having benefitted from their efforts, my husband and I decided to make a donation to the Foundation. That said, we first checked with the Charity Navigator, and found that their rating is very high at 99% or 4/4. Most (80%) of the rating reflects the Foundation's accountability and financing, but also leadership and adaptability (10%) and culture and community (10%).
