I had Hokkaido fresh cream soft serve when I visited Japan a few years back, and I've always wanted to enjoy it again. It is not overly sweet like our very own Mr. Softie; the Hokkaido fresh cream is silky soft and has a natural sweetness. Love it so much! Not sure if I could find a better NY bagel in Hong Kong, so the jury is out a bit on the bagel from Holly Brown. My breakfast sandwich was salmon, avacado and a poached egg on top of a plain bagel. Along with my regular coffee americano, something left me a bit flat about this place. The coffee was thin, no punch of flavor or fullness in the bean. My Holly Brown experience was average. Not great, not awful, not memorable, just average. My breakfast had no wow moment. I had no moment of customer service amazement. Coffe was average. Average is a 3 to me on Yelp. It has the prominent corner location that is right next to the TST N1 Subway entrance and is facing the popular Hanoi Road. There aren't many dessert options in this part of TST, which makes Owl's Choux an easy destination for post meal treats or a cool down option from the treacherous summer heat. Two things that don't work in favor for Owl's Choux is the price and the fact they sell gelato. In Chinese, "雪糕" or "冰淇淋" is the only way to describe gelato, but is in fact the same word for ice cream, which gets confusing. This is where the price point becomes tricky, as the gelato is handmade. That's right, not imported or store bought, but handmade at home by the owner, Mr. Ricky Chin. For all the sleepness nights Ricky has put into the business, it's quite clear presentation and quality matter above all other things. Dessert fiends, take note. The chouxs themselves don't disappoint. At $58 for a scoop between the choux, one might flinch at the price, but after a bite of their red velvet choux, I was actually semi-stuffed. I'm all for variety, so be sure to indulge on samples before committing to the real thing. If we're talking gelato exclusively, I appreciate the hazelnut / praline + cinnamon crumble the most. In fact I could just eat those two and life would be grand. Lastly, the service has always been my cup of tea. They're generally overly polite and good with dealing with the influx of random crowds that come here. The shop is bright and elegant, on the third floor of Hopewell Center, covering up a full corner. They sell small chocolates, bars, spreads and ice cream made of milk, dark, white, sugar-free, hazelnut...all kind basically! As small pieces of dark choc (or 'chocaviar') they have one that is at least 75% and a blend with truffle. They both looked amazing. Little pricey, won't deny it...but it makes for the perfect present, as it is presented in an elegant box. Other gift ideas are their assortment of dark chocs or their bars, all packaged in thick nicely designed paper. I didn't look into the ice creams (gelatos) but from what I saw they have a big range of flavors: lemon, orange, cacao, nuts...all very neatly laid at the central counter. So, if you are into chocolate and want to treat yourself or you're looking for a small present, this is probably a great place for that.
