Ha Ling is labelled as an easy hike (moderate for those who are out of shape) the higher you get the steeper it becomes and yes it is steep going down.
I would strongly recommend going on a sunny day, the chance of going on a rainy day does increase your chances in slipping on your butt. The summer time is the best, yes it would be busy but the view is absolutely beautiful. My girlfriend, brother, and I started at 8am so the early you go the better!
I had hiked Ha Ling 3 times the past two weeks and what I learn each time since I am out of shape is that you would need a minimum of 4 bottles of water, a couple of snacks to munch on here and there, proper walking shoes, walking stick, and comfortable attire. You will sweat while you're in the trees but it does kinda get chilly once you reach the peak. Face towels are also the best since of course you can wipe your face from time to time.
Ha Ling is meant for everyone; occasionally you'll see seniors, kids, couples, dogs, and even parents carrying their baby in backpacks!
Once you reach the top, it is almost a crime to not head over along the ridge to Miner's Peak which is right next door to your right!
For the beginners your toes, ball of foot, and knees will hurt coming down so make sure you have proper foot wear that have good grip. Yes your legs will feel sore for a few days but that's normal! It's kind of worst on the first day after the hike because it will be hard to bend and walk up/down the stairs but hey it's a good life time experience.
I would STRONGLY recommend Ha Ling Peak and of course would so come back. read more
