We were served by Richard S, who is a friendly and experience staff. The service that we received was the finest! He found a suit that fits me perfectly (finally). The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable and clearly take pride in their job - brilliant customer service! Price-wise they claim not to be beaten and even state that if you find the same garment cheaper elsewhere they will give you it for free! The selection for men is vast and should meet the needs of any formal wear shopping man...unless he wants something really unusual. There is also a section for women which is rather small...or microscopic by comparison to the men's section, though they do have a catalogue that you can order women's wear from with a bit more range but quite basic designs. If you're a man looking for formal wear I would definitely recommend trying Slaters.

Expect, as you enter, to be barely greeted by a lack lustre sales zombie and confronted by a world of bland and naff. So many times I have been tempted by their promises of cheapdom and thought, foolishly, that I might at least find one diamond in the rough. To this day it has never happened. I can't even place what it is, the quality is definitely lacking but then even the market has stylish cheap items. It's mostly, I believe, down to the fact that every item is just ever-so-slightly unconvincing - it looks similar to a decent pair of high heels but somehow the style of the toe just makes it look ugly. It looks like a nice pair of boots, except they added those horrid tassles. It looks like a decent pair of pumps except the heel is mis-shapen. You get the idea. On top of that they seem to lack utterly in colour and variation too. Perhaps if they had a rainbow of different shades I might be conned into thinking there was some variety. But let's be brutal, that is not very likely. I'm sorry Shoe Zone - be it your bland poor quality shoes, disinterested staff, or lack of variety - I just ain't buyin' it.

And then an assistant would pull out all the cutesy styles in my size and my mother would send back the ones she deemed inappropriate for school, and I would try on the remaining ones, pick my favourite, and we would leave with two pairs, as I would invariably destroy the first pair before Christmas. I was that clumsy. I like to think I've refined myself a bit these days, but when it comes to properly shoes, I'm not talking fashion shoes to go out with the girlies, but tidy work shoes that require me to be on my feet or out representing at an event and such, and I need something that's firstly comfortable and with some semblence of style, I always resort back to Clarks'. Funny how stuff like that stays with you. My official tidy boots, the boots I live in for walking around when required to be in a suit are Clarks and they don't cause me an ounce of trouble. All leather and beautifully made, comfortable, practical, hardwearing, and not hideous. Clarks' still cater to children, and it still amuses me watching a child getting fitted for new term shoes, and the styles have got a bit more child friendly since then, but they've got a bit more fashion friendly all around. Men, Women and Children, they even do the odd handbag, and the shoecare that everyone tries to sell you but you never want to buy. Styles reflect the fashions, albeit a more practical foot friendly version. Still irks me that they never sell the Clarks' Originals range in any Clarks' store I've been in lately, but you can't have it all now can you.

Aldo's prices are about average high street prices, or just above...their range appears to reflect this with most styles pretty standard for a high street shoe retailer but with a few standing out a as bit more fashion forward. For blokes , unless you're going for 'casual loafers' or 'sports shoes' you have to abide by the current apparently unbreakable fashion rule that is irritatingly long pointed toes. I must admit I'm getting a bit tired of this look. To me, most guys wearing a pair of these shoes just look overly-self-consciously trendy but it appears a man would have to try pretty hard to find a non-pointed toe on the high street...unless venturing into Clarks or Slaters. It has actually got to the point where a man wearing a more rounded toe will probably look like he's making some sort of fashion statement...cue rounded toes coming back 'in'. Yawn. But if you like your toes trendy and pointed there's plenty to choose from! So to sum up, Aldo's not breaking any boundaries, but probably serves the average shoe-shopper well.

Further poking around, led me to see another buckle clad biker boot for just £90, a quick sniff test and, yes, it was leather. Why hadn't I taken the plunge before? It's always been a place I'd walked by and never felt compelled to explore. Is it because I've got an uncle Aldo and I was avoiding it through disassociation? I'm not sure. It could be down to the fact that every time I've wandered by the store is absolutely teeming with people, or that I prejudged it to be super expensive and beyond my budget. My sensible shoe/non sneaker budget is always less than my kickass sneaker budget. In addition to women's shoes they do a range of men's boots and shoes, although on first glance, your man in your life would have to be a bit on the metrosexual side, as styles are more on the exploratory fashion conscience side of things rather than practical Clarks' types. Some of the selections are hit and miss, and as a demographic it's hard to decide if they're targeting the older middle aged crowd, the fashion conscience students, or the teenagers with far too much money yet a healthy appetite for switchblade stilettos and thigh highs. Hmmm. The last time I went in sale season was still in bloom, and due to busy periods staff were a little fraught and run ragged from traipsing up and down stairs, one imagines. More comment on that when I go back for my boots, preferably at a quieter time.

Having failed to find a sensible, waterproof, flat,…read moredecent looking boot so far in Leeds I was thinking of sacking off the whole search and just wearing some wellington boots. At least I would have dry feet. I didn't have much faith in Barratt fixing this for me, but spied what I imagined to be the perfect pair in their window display. Black, check, waterproof, check, nice, check! So I went in. I very nearly got distracted by a hoard of other non-essential pretty shoes, such as some lovely jade suede heels, but was put back to the real mission by my boyfriend. I asked the lady if she could show me those lovely ones in the window in a size five please. She said I should ask for them upstairs, in the *cough* children's section. Hrmph. So the one pair of reasonable, sensible, decent boots I could find were children's boots. Unhappy me. I went up and luckily they go up to a size 5 in kiddy shoes. I tried them on and they were comfy so I thought I'd just go for it. £25 they were. For an adult that is pretty good, but for kids shoes? Man alive! Pretty expensive. Thankfully I am not a child. As for the boots, the still look cool and have survived a good 2 months so far. One major problem is that they are a bit lethal on any shiny/wet surface. Be it rainy pavement, icy road or indeed waxen floor I am sure to fall flat on my behind unless I concentrate real hard at walking. And no one should have to use brain power to walk, surely. So, again, I worry for the kids. But still. Can't judge them on one pair of children's boots. Overall, they offer a large range of pretty looking shoes and boots. Prices tend to reflect quality - extra medium all the way. So not amazing, but not awful either. And the boots have kept my feet dry at the very least, so I'm happy about that.

One thing I would say is don't get flip flops from there, you can get them cheaper elsewhere, and they are exactly the same, same labels etc for up to £10 difference which is a lot (a whole other pair of shoes, or a top!) A metal staircase leads you down to the basement which is Adidas land. If only to gaze in morbid fascination at the freak of branding that is the Adidas leather couch complete with buttons! Any Adidas lover will be at home here, surrounded by classic tracksuits and exclusive collections. Upon ascending the stairs you see that each step denotes a key moment in the history of Adidas, elevating the importance of the basement store to something of a museum exhibit. Up to the second floor (this shop really is huge!) and you find the more general clothing with a variety of brands including fread Perry and Lyle & Scott. The gear is pricey but a little more varied and interesting than the usual suspects in the Adidas dungeon. There are loads of lavishly branded t-shirts, expensive jeans and some vintage-look cardigans and checked shirts...but I can't help but feel you'd be better off buying true vintage for a quarter of the price rather than paying through your nose just for the addition of a tiny embroidered logo. If you like labels of a certain ilk and don't mind paying a hefty chunk to do a bit of free advertising for your favourite brand then you'll probably love Size? If you're not into labels and are shopping on a budget then even the friendly and enthusiastic staff probably wouldn't get you over the threshold!

If its high tops or retro cool, basketball kicks or skater shoes that take your fancy, then definitely take a trip to Size if you fancy something different. One of the pleasant rarities with Size? The staff actually know what they're on about, there's a passion for the collections, and if you ask, there's usually an answer. That's without mentioning the content, the collections are unique, which is probably evident in the price tag; your average pair of Converse are going to cost you more at Size, but they're more than likely different, or limited edition, and for any sneakerhead, it's a bonus worth the price tag. And that was just the first floor. If the giant Converse boot on the ground floor doesn't tickle you (it still amuses me to this day) then there's the basement, dedicated to the uber-cool Adidas Originals brand. Everything is organised by colour palette and is typical of the Originals brand, again it's a bit pricey, but if you're a fan of the brand it's totally worth it to pick up something fairly unique. Once you've hit Adidas, jump in the lift, take the two floors up and get off at the equally uber-cool clothing department. Again there is staff on hand to provide informed answers to questions, and that's not forgetting the chance to browse the familiar brands with a different twist to them. If you like the idea of your Nike and your Lyle & Scott, or your Adidas and your Stussy all under one well informed, friendly and varied roof, check out Size on Vicar Lane, Leeds.
