This is a review of my experience with H&R Block, location on Joe Howe Drive in Halifax, Nova Scotia. CRA was giving me a difficult time regarding claiming the care expenses for my late mother. Helene, such an awesome human being, took care of addressing my taxes for the last 10 years after getting approved for the Disability Tax Credit. It did take 18 months to get everything taken care of and many sleepless nights. I am very thankful to Helene for her diligent work and her patience dealing with me. I highly recommend her. I will NEVER use H R Block again. Im still waiting (2024 now) for my refund from them filing and making a mistake which made me pay more $to Revenue Canad due to their error in filing my 2020 income taxes. I was told I would revieve the amount back ($300.00 odd dollars) as I had paid for the insurance they offer if they make a mistake, It's now 2024 and I've never recieved anything or been approached by them at all. I use INtuit and file myself my simple tax filing since then. If I had a more complicated return I would go to a REAL accountant and pay him or her. read more

I booked an appointment over a week in advanced. Upon arrival they didn't have me in their system and then they did. but the person I was scheduled to meet was in the middle of a social visit. I've been a client from H&R Block for 5 years, and always get the protection plan. H&R Block representative committed a mistake in my 2018 and 2020 return and now I'm dealing with a huge penalty with CRA. The customer service from H&R Block has been rude, took a long time to get back to me, and they were not helpful at all. I REGRET had been a client of this company for so long!!! read more

I cannot even begin to explain how terrible of an experience I had working with these people. I am an American working in Canada and these people completely screwed up my taxes. The reason I go to an accountant is because I am unfamiliar with the tax code in Canada. It would be reasonable then that I have questions. The people at H&R block treated every question I had as an insinuation that they were lying to me. I simply wanted to know what I was being charged for and why. I had to come back over 4 times because they were unwilling to explain the forms that I needed to bring in. Each time I would come in with the wrong information and they would make me leave and come back a week later to again be told to leave. At the end of this process I was left with the Canadian government thinking I owe them over $8000. After this ordeal I had to find another accountant to correct the damage done by H&R block (at a very high cost) to find out the in fact the Canadian government owes me $1000. If you have any kind of non-standard, non-trivial tax situation like I do, DO NOT GO HERE. read more

Ive done my taxes with H&R Block online software for the past 7 years and have always paid the extra to have someone look it all over before filing. Ive never had an issue before this year. Last week I completed my taxes using the online software. Unfortunately there was no indication of system requirements. I thought I had my taxes all done and spoke with the person who was reviewing them. He found inconsistencies which were all related to the yes/no toggle switches which kept changing back to yes after I would click no. The software also disappeared CCA info from previous years. I had to spend hours on the phone trying to sort it out. Their solution was for me to start a new return using a different browser which meant that I would have to pay again. The woman assured me that I would get a refund credited to my card for the initial expense directing me to call back after starting the new return for the refund. I paid to file a new return and called back asking for a refund on the initial return I had started. The fella I spoke to said he would get that started immediately. Easy peasy, right? Not so fast though...I got the new return completed and had it looked at by the same person. He gave me the go ahead to file. I tried to but there was an issue with the netfile number I had entered. I had accidentally hit the 2 key instead of 1. No problem I thought I will just go back and change it. haha. Not so easy. I called customer service again explaining the problem and the woman told me that I should wait 24 hours to see if the software might change over night. Ridiculous. Feeling very frustrated at this point I asked for a refund and was planning to take my info elsewhere to get my taxes done. She told me that only a manager could give me a refund and I would have to wait 5-10 days to get a call from him from which time I would have to wait 30 days to get a refund to my credit card. Huh?The last fella I spoke with told me that he was just issuing a refund. One of you is lying or has absolutely no idea of policy. Currently I am frustrated. Apparently out a couple hundred bucks that I may or may not get back and my taxes still are up in the air. Unless you feel like swimming in glue or stumbling around the corridors of a Kafka novel take your taxes elsewhere to have them done. read more

I purchased the software and a week later I canceled it. They told I will have the reimbursement. Two months later no news, finally I called again and the financial department decided that I just can't have the reimbursement and I didn't even use the software read more

Avoid this software at all costs, even for free use. I've purchased a service called "Ask A Tax Expert" to get help for my tax return. Because I run my own business I had a problem filling out few sections. Here is the H&R Block message on the following page: " Buy an Expert Review and talk to a tax expert. They'll help you complete this page and review the rest of your return too." It took them 2 days to call me, and when I talk to the "Tax expert" he says: "See, I'm not a software guy, unfortunately, I should leave you to struggle through this and find out how to fill it out, if you have any questions please let me know!" I don't see how that would help me, and I've already paid them 35 dollars to tell me that! Avoid this company at all cost, just surprising why they're still in business with this level of incompetency and false advertising. read more

worst service I have ever experienced very rude older lady was rude and disrespectful, don't file ur taxes here !

They are not professionals, and take no responsibility for their mistakes. Hire a real accountant! I trusted HnR Block to do my taxes for 6 years. I was recently audited, and learned that they changed my account number, not even recignizing I was a repeat client, made errors in my dependent claims, happily took their % of my inflated up rebate due to their mistakes, and now claim they are not responsible for their own errors. I am faced with a $10,0000 bill from the government for overpaid refunds, and they won't give me a dime of their fees back! Run, don't walk away. These guys are dangerous. read more

Filed my taxes with them for several years, and and every experience I've had with one particular accountant has been fantastic. Sadly, he's retired. This year I was stuck with someone who didn't seem to ow what they were doing. I did half the work for her, and she literally only plugged in numbers. In the end, I filed as a small business and paid $250 for the service and was told I would make back nearly $500. Several weeks later, the CRA sends me my refund and it's about $400 short! I did my homework and looked up a reason for this huge change, and found that it was all due to one box that the accountant filled with what seems to be an imaginary number. I've called H&R Block on several occasions now trying to get someone to review this filing that I paid $250 on, and have gotten nothing but rude replies saying it's not their fault and that they NEVER REVIEW THEIR WORK. (?!?!?!) I've had my life saved by one of their accountants before, but on the two occasions that I got someone else, the experience was a nightmare. Terrible. Don't go here unless you want your taxes to get screwed out of money. read more

This was my first time getting professional help on my taxes. Previously I did them myself, but I had a complicated situation this year so I thought I'd get some help. It was a disappointing experience. For one thing, 9 times out of 10 when I try to call them, it goes to voice mail, and then informs me that the voice mail box is full. When I finally got an appointment with a tax consultant, he took about 20 minutes to enter in the information I brought with me and then billed me $250! Subsequently, when I received follow up notices from CRA, and tried to get his help, I couldn't reach him by phone (due to the voice mail issue above). I tried him on email - he took two weeks to respond and asked me to email him a scan of the notices I received. I did that right away, and then didn't hear back from him again for 2-3 weeks. Again I tried on phone/email to get in touch, but never heard back. Finally today I got a hold of him and he told me he responded to the CRA on my behalf (but had neglected to tell me). To add to all of that, when I showed the completed tax return to someone in my family who has a lot of experience with filing tax returns, he pointed out 4 or 5 places where I could have saved some money - e.g., I work as an independent consultant, so he told me I could claim some of my home office expenses as business expenses. Why didn't the H&R Block consultant point that out to me? In fact, the H&R Block consultant wasn't even going to put in my dental expenses because he assumed they wouldn't be significant - it was only when I insisted that they were significant (I spent about 3,500 on dental expenses in the last year) that he bothered to put them in. Isn't the whole purpose of hiring someone to do your taxes, that they help you fill everything out properly and completely? Very disappointed. Next year I'll look for a different tax consultant. read more

The worst communication, in terms of customer service, I've seen before. First, my wife and I arranged for them to do the taxes (remote tax expert), we uploaded all the docs, that was in the beginning of March. On March 12th we send a message asking price and details, on March 16th we got a reply saying we would get an answer the next day. On March 22nd we sent another message. On April 1, we send another message for an update because we were for almost a month. The next day, Ovidiu Palivan, finally replied saying he was fully booked. At this point we started doing it by ourselves and we paid for all the extra services. When we finally managed to get an appointment for Expert Reviee (April 6th) the only available date was April 19th with Handel Jaikumar, at 10:20AM. At 10:33AM we got a message to reschedule the appointment because they tried 3 times and nothing, LIE! My wife works from home and I was with our baby daughter at home and no phone calls. Now there's no way to contact them as all communication with HR block is not available. Avoid using HR block and if you absolutely needs to use it, watch out for those experts, THEY LIE. read more

Horrible experience and how this was handled. The remote "expert" that was assigned to me Trudie asked about what my medical premiums were this is after l had submitted my T4 to her, surprised l had to show her where to find this on the T4, then it was asking me about classification on another bill, who is the expert here, after finally completing the process l was given such an astronomical rate, they wanted to check my previous years rate and then came back to essentially accuse me by saying l they have no record of me haven filed my taxes with them, until l sent the receipt for taxes filed in 2020 and another proof only then was l believed. The District Manager who Finally called for resolution Scott, his very matter of fact delivery and in no uncertain terms told me among other things that Trudie basically was the best caliber tax person they have, that says it all, one who isn't able to decipher premiums on a T4. He made matters worse with his messaging and delivery. I finally Used another company, not only did l feel like l.was seal ng with someone who was knowledgable in this field, they got me nearly $800 in returns, when Trudie at the end of a chaotic process said l owed. Never again. read more

It is what it is. If you plan ahead and have an appointment, you will encounter a frantic office with lots of people in a panic and not nearly enough staff, but you will be served. The problems arise here when you have further issues or problems after you leave. You cannot drop in here and expect to get help, much less find anyone at the desk. They are clearly trying to move as many people through as fast as possible. Make sure you are on that list before you show up and then hope all is correct or you may have a tough time getting last minute help. read more

Horrible! It was disorganized and unprofessional. People kept coming in and out of the office as the accountant was doing our taxes. He kept confusing my information with my boyfriends and just seemed lazy about putting our information in. Was not impressed and will not be going back! She asked if she would get more taxes back because she has native status and the receptionist replied something like " No . . . you people are always trying to get more and more" We couldn't believe it and I wish we had just left then. read more

Do not have your taxes done here!!! Big rip off, Charged me $175.00 and scammed me into a credit card that i did not ask for! They didn't even apologize for this mistake just left me with the job of fixing their mistake of changing my direct deposit which of course was going into their bank acct. Now i must fix this mistake and get rid of the credit card they forced on me. They said in broken English "card or esend?". I mistakenly thought she ment how am i paying for their services? I simply said "card" and almost instantly passed me a credit card. I replied "oh no! No! I don't want a credit card! She just said "too late, i asked you card or esend" There is a big difference in asking a person if they want a CREDIT CARD or not. Was not made clear at all and they have already, automatically taken $175.00 just to do taxes from a single mother of one child that has a disability!! Nice. Will never go back! read more

Terrible. I should have heeded the other online reviews. I was desperate to get my taxes done (late, as I do) and it being a Saturday, called in the morning to make sure they were actually open and to make an appointment. I was told that no appointment was needed but if I showed up by 3PM (they closed at 4PM) I should be able to get in. I showed up at 2:30PM, just to be safe, and there were already eight other people in line before me! No one was at the reception desk, simply a sign in sheet. I waited until 3:45PM at which point there were still 3 people to go and gave up. No acknowledgement from the staff to anyone but the next customer, not even a "sorry about the long wait". I used H&R Block 10 years ago for my taxes and regretted it, guess the one positive thing is that I will not have to regret them screwing up my taxes! read more

I'm raising my review by a couple of stars because I just got my return and I got a lot more than I expected. Avoid H&R Block at all costs. I went in for a normal tax return. Two T4's - nothing that should have caused anyone any problems. I got a fairly large return, which seemed great. Their sales person offered the "cash now" option, stating that you'd have to pay a bit more, but it would be worth it because you don't have to wait. He held up the corner of a form and told me to sign there. Fast forward a month. It's a Friday, and in the mail I get a notice that there was a shortcoming in what the government actually paid H&R Block. I now owe them $1500. I get on the phone to my local branch where I filed and am told I must go to HQ - call Alberta. I call in and am passed around until I finally demand a manager. At this point I'm more than a little upset. I speak to the manager and she says that my employer incorrectly completed the form, and there is nothing they can do - so of course I get on the phone with my employer. They let me know that it was in fact H&R Blocks error. At this point it's the weekend. I call and leave a voicemail asking to hear back from the manager who lied. Now it is mid-week and I have heard nothing. I call in and ask to speak to the manager's manager. He bawks at me. Tells me they have done what they can do - to which I reply that I will have to report them to the Better Business Bureau, and the Consumer Protection Act. He laughs - they won't protect you he tells me. I tell him that I will go ahead anyway, and he asks what I want. I tell him to at least hear the truth - that they are at fault. He barely admits that, and so I move forward. After filing my complaint with the Better Business Bureau and CPA I started to hear back from H&R Block. They offered to refund my fees - a meager $150 off of what they wanted from me. I tell them at this point it is principle. I was knocked around, lied to, and treated like I meant nothing. None of their promised protections applied when it was their agent who mis-entered information. I'm still fighting - and will for a long time to come. Avoid the pain yourself and file with someone who knows what they're doing. read more

I only gave one star because I have no choice. I have been a customer of H R Block for 17 years and I have never in my life been so disgusted in a company that I thought was pretty good to be honest. I'm a single mom of two kids and thanks to this lovely covid 19 I lost my job . I filed my return with H&R back in February and I am receiving $2,500 refund. My refund was paid to H&R March 5th direct deposit by canada revenue a it is now April 4th and they still have my money will not give me my money or tell me where my money or why they're holding it. I have spoke to multiple managers ,customer service reps oddly enough they even had a random person claiming to be a manager whose number and address goes to auto shop not an H&R location. She called me stating she was a manager for H&R and guaranted me my chq was cut, signed and being sent FedEx overnight with a guarant . These assholes have put me through nothing but hell. I have no income because of covid 19 I have I really needed my refund I have begged the manager for my e my refund. I even offered to pay a fee so that they could load a prepaid Mastercard of theirs so that I could get my refund faster and hopefully try and avoid having to go out during this pandemic with my two boys and wait outside of a bank who is letting people in one by one to deposit this check that has never even showed up yet. Every time I talk to these assholes all they say is we have 30 days to issue your payment we have 30 days to issue your payment you'll get it by the 5th of April. Like the whole entire world right now is working together to make life easier the CRA is making it a point to to pay people as fast as can with their tax refund, they are also paying people within 6 days their employment app like Rogers is even giving people free service and On Demand. All I am asking for is for the money that is owed to me wtf is so hard about that. I was told I signed a contract that stated they had 30 days to issue my refund but after reading the small print it actually says 7 days. they also will charge 10% interest if I owe them money and don't pay within 7 days. Maybe I should hold them to the same standards that they hold us and after a call to customer service today I have been told that I have to wait another 3 to 5 business days as now they may investigate the issue . my money is probably in a GIC and they're collecting interest on it. It's nice to know that when the world is in crisis don't use these pricks it's pathetic that c r a is paying people before HR Block. Obviously being a customer for 18 years means nothing to them and I will never be returning to H&R Block again . Pretty sad that I had to contact a news station to help me get answers!!! read more

I went in to have my taxes done by the "tax experts." I was behind a couple years, the lady at the front was helpful with her information (some not accurate). I dropped everything off and told her i didn't have all my T4 slips yet for 2017. She said that was fine and they would get them online. I got called down to come pick up my taxes and they weren't actually ready, I do live 20 minutes away from the office. Got called back 3 days later and went into sign everything(not even with the accountant, not once did i actually speak to the person who did my taxes) and was handed a VISA card that my money would be put onto, not only did i NOT ask for this you have to actually pay to get your money off of this card. I asked them to please fix it for me as i did not want the card and they said everything was sent away already and there was nothing they could do. I went home and realized they also did NOT put all my T4 slips in my 2017 year and only put my part time slip on there. I called them right away took all my stuff back in only to be told they could not do anything and i would have to wait until i was audit by the government. I also received 4 letters in the mail stating i now owed money. I called into the Head office to tell them my experience as i was extremely unimpressed with my experience as i was not offered the guarantee and i paid a lot of money to have my taxes done to be done incorrectly. He told me that my T4 slips were not accessible(which was a lie) and not on the internet for them to be able to do my taxes. I called Canada Revenue Agency and they said they were there and all in there by March 1 so they were clearly there. I than made another complaint to have someone call me to see what could be done to assist me in fixing my taxes as they were extremely screwed up. I filed that the second week of April and someone called me May 31. Since than i have asked CRA to review my taxes. The only thing the head office could offer me was for me to return to the branch i had filed my taxes with and have them review it and fix it, however when i tried that in April i was told they could not help me. Now we are 2 months after i have got my taxes back and they expected me to just sit back and wait. Customer service is lack there of. --- So not only did HnR block happily take my money for my taxes, they DIDNT even do them properly. I paid for services i did not receive. This place is a scam and i would never want the same thing to happen to someone else. Save yourself the money and hire someone who actually knows what they are doing. Dont waste your money or your time, I will NEVER go back nor refer anyone to use this company. read more

You realize how big a scam they are, only when something goes wrong. I'd filed with them once before and it went OK. The next time, their accountant messed up my filing. I had to refile through somebody else and spend more money for that. So please avoid this very unprofessional company. read more

Would give zero stars if I could. We drove 2 hours into town because no one local could do US taxes and we were assured multiple times that the person we'd booked our appointment with was fully qualified for US taxes as well as Canadian. We get to our appointment and he can't do "THAT" kind of U.S. taxes and is quoting me very different rates from the phone quote for our Canadian taxes. Plus he apparently needed none of the piles of paperwork I'm supposed to have with me, including last year's taxes (that he very specifically told me to bring). Staff were generally polite and we weren't kept waiting long for our appointment, so one star. But still a complete waste of my and my partner's time. read more

Me and my partner filed taxes this and the previous year using H&R Block services. Although the staff were quite helpful once we got to them, we had a problem with their online appointment system. I booked an early appointment online for an office downtown. We showed up on time, and they tell us that the office "doesn't take online appointments and we didn't have one". They accommodated us for two hours later in an office in the suburbs. We ended up loosing the whole morning at work due to this misunderstanding. Why do you people have an online appointment application if you do not take appointments online? Plus in the mail reminding you of the appointment, they say you need to pay if you don't show up! They on the other hand do not compensate you for the waste of time. Very unprofessional appointment booking system, though professionals do a decent job when u manage to get a real appointment. read more
