I've used HR Block at multiple locations on the west side for the past 5+ years and have been using this location for last year and now this year; my senior tax specialist is Dennis, a really nice man who did an amazing job handling my taxes last year but unfortunately, I can't say the same for this year and has led to my decision to stop using HR Block in the future. My appt was for APR 12 at 5pm and sad to say Dennis is not very punctual with his appointment times. I've had to wait 20-30 minutes OVER my scheduled time both times due to him still being with another client. Last year it wasn't an issue as he took his time with my taxes and we were ready to file by the end of the appointment (2 hours). This year, it was just not it. I had all my paperwork ready for him including all business expenses from my personal business, my rental property, all GET taxes receipts, my w-2 from my main job, as well as my husbands paperwork as we decided to file together this year. We sat down at 5:20 and as we went through everything I told him everything he would ask about and labeled and coded everything to make the process as quick and smooth as possible. My husband is military and is from WI and my company is based in VA so there was some things he had to look up and verify but it seemed like everything was going well but he said he would need to do some research and told me he had another appointment at 6pm. It was 5:40 when he pretty much kicked me out of his office but hey, things seemed to go smoothly and I just had to wait for him to message me on the app so no stress right? 4 of 5 days later I message Dennis sending him some information I remembered he would probably need for my rental property (that he hadn't inquired about). No response, no acknowledgment, nothing. It had been 9 days now (20th) and still nothing so I decided to call the office. I let the secretary know I messaged Dennis on the app and have not received any information about my taxes or any updates. She asked me "do you have all the papers he requested from you?" HUH? mind you I check that app on my phone every day and there was NO requests for ANYTHING from Dennis ANYWHERE. At this point I was so fed up but firm and told the secretary I received no request she told me to "wait sweetie" and at that point I had already made the decision this was my last year with them. Lady, I don't know you like that for you to call me "honey" or "sweetie" and you don't even know how old I am, how disrespectful and casual can you be when this is my first interaction OVER THE PHONE with you. Dennis ended up calling me back 30 min or so later and said "'I had a few questions for you" okay, soo why didn't you ask them through the app or call me in the last 9 days? why did I have to reach out for an update before you continued my tax filing? he asked some questions (that I had already gave him the information for on our initial appointment) and he said he would have them done in the next day. Well guess what? are we surprised I didn't get anything the next day? no. Are we surprised I had to message Dennis again asking for an update on the 22nd? again, no. The 22nd, I messaged Dennis again asking for an estimated time it would be completed as my husband would be deploying soon (the 27th) and we needed to look over the final document together and approve before he leaves. How does he reply? "I need your husband's x, y, z paperwork and I need a copy of your mil dependent ID"...AGAIN why is there MORE things you need and why is it NOW you're needing it after me having to initiate contact with you again? am I being punk'd? Am I not the one paying THEM for their service? I gave Dennis everything he requested and he FNALLY had my taxes ready to file on the 25th. I got the notification to look over the paperwork and saw my refunds but wait..where's my husband's (usually 6k) in WI refund? I messaged Dennis about this and he said he would "look into it and get back to me asap" and the message after that? "WI need the city and county and zip to efile. Refund will be what he expects."...EXCUSE ME? SO YOU MEAND TO TELL ME YOU SENT ME THE FINAL DOCUMENTS TO APPROVE BUT YOU WERE NOT GOING TO FILE MY HUSBANDS PAPRWORK WHEN I SAID WE WERE FILING TOGETHER?!" God seriously must be testing my patience and I'm a centimeter away from failing this test. At this point..I'm just done but I'm in too deep to stop the process and do it myself. We finally got the files to approve and there are so many egregious errors and things wrong including filing taxes to a state I don't owe money to as well as underreporting my federal refund, and not handling MSRRA withholding properly. This whole process has traumatized me and I can confidently say I do NOT trust HR Block with my future tax filing. I chose them for "peace of mind" but I received everything BUT that. read more

Kapolei H&R Block Experience: We arrived 10-15 mins prior to our scheduled 3:30 appointment on a Saturday. While seated in the waiting area along with my family we overheard a couple who came in the office and checked in around 3:45 pm for Mr Dennis. Mr Dennis later exited from the back sometime around 4:10 pm and announced that he is running late and he will get to everyone asap. Moments later, he saw my family but immediately by passed us to shake hands with the 4: 00 pm appointment and stated out loud in front of everyone waiting with out hesitation that that this family can ONLY be seen by himself. After stating that comment, he asked my family and I to follow him to a cubicle so that someone else can assist us. After noting that no one was aware of our arrival which was not pre planned and absolutely unacceptable he finally found someone who was open. We sat and tried to complete the process. While seated at the designated cubicle we noted the 4 pm family walking along with Mr Dennis to the back of his office without further delay. Even after designating someone else to cover down for him we have not even completed what we suppose to. He later arrived to the cubicle and asked us to follow him to his back office around 5 pm. We left the office a little after 5:30 pm in which the entire time we felt he was rushing and we were not understanding the breakdown. The process was not even complete. This is by far the worst H&R Block experience we had ever had. We felt UNWELCOME and not IMPORTANT since maybe we are not part of the local population who he had a long rapport with. I am military and ONLY wish that no other family would experience this type of treatment. Why? Because I was with my kids who witnessed the treatment and I have always tried my best to teach them fairness and respect. I would NOT RECOMMEND this location or Mr Dennis. People who say he is the best maybe right or wrong to say however, my experience was witnessed by multiple family in the waiting area who I had a small conversation with about the treatment. We go to Dennis, every year to do our taxes. He is great!!! He makes you feel comfortable and gives great advice. There are so many guarantees that are offered, which is amazing and comforting! I first had my taxes done by Mary over 20 years ago when she was at their location at Sears Pearlridge. My Mom and I had just moved to this side of the island. We each had our taxes done by Mary and enjoyed her professionalism and expertise. We went back the next year and again felt that part of our lives were competently taken care of. Then life happened and I ended up going somewhere else for a couple of years but wasn't really happy for the price I was paying. I looked for recommendations and a friend liked the fellow she was going to at a different H&R Block. I hired him for a few years until he retired. Then I found Mary again. By then she had moved to this office. When she worked on my taxes I felt they were in capable hands again. Sure enough she found a mistake the previous guy had been making. So I've been going back year after year. I'm super slow and unorganized and she just finds comfortable ways to get my stuff done in spite of me The last few years we've been finishing in one visit instead of two which I'm proud of Thank goodness I can access the info online nowadays. We'll see how it goes with the unauthorized people nosing around in everyone's data... For this year it's a wrap and Mary got everything in and submitted with hardly any bloodshed! First time I ever tried to use h and r block and it will be the last time. Stay away from these people. Tried to use the free app on line. Ran into an issue after I finished forms but before the taxes were filed. Went to local office, explained situation, hoping they could use everything I had already done. The office manager said there was nothing they could do and gave me a BOGUS number to call. Zero integrity. Later.... Got a call from someone named Jimmy who claimed to be managing several offices in Hawaii. Explained my situation and he accused me of making up false stories. Now going to proceed with FTC complaint for deceptive practices. I had a simple question and all they had to do was be truthful. Then they try to turn the table and make it my fault. read more

I have been going to HR Block for over 35 years to do my taxes every year on 14th April. First, it was at Sears Pearlridge, then their Pear Kai office, then their Kapolei office because it was closer to home. My 2021 taxes were prepared by Dennis G Smith, "Master Tax Advisor." I paid their fee plus a "Peace of Mind" fee. I received a letter from the Federal that there was an error and I needed to spend Thousands of Dollars. I called the Kapolei office and asked for Dennis, but they said he was on vacation. I went ahead and paid the amount specified. About two months later, I received a letter from the State asking for Thousands of Dollars, so I called the Kapolei office again. Dennis told me to drop off the 2021 Return, and he would do an Amendment. When he amended the amendment, he made several errors and had to amend it. Afterward, he wanted me to pay another fee when I had already paid the "Peace of Mind" for 2021. I told him I paid, and he asked me to bring him a bottle of Blueberry Brandy. I told  Dennis G Smith I would see him next week and confirmed my appointment for 14th April 2024, at 3 pm. When I arrived for my appointment, the receptionist said I did not have an appointment. I showed her the confirmation on my cell phone, which did not matter, nor did she care. I waited an hour. She notified Dennis, and he came to the waiting area and told me not to worry; he would accommodate me. I waited 3 hours, and then he changed his mind and said he would not see me. After waiting 3 hours, he returned to the area, began being rude and mean, and said he couldn't see me. I think Dennis is an incompetent tax preparer and needs to step down. The two receptionists could have been more helpful and honored my text reservation. read more

Death and taxes, we all pay somehow. And walk-ins are welcomed. I'm surprised that I'm going to be the first to review this site. What yelpers don't pay taxes? Anyway, I came here last year and was so impressed with the service I had to come again. Even through I had a large processing fee, my tax consultant Dennis, found me some credits I did not know I was eligible for. Their site is at the tail end of a strip mall. This place could not be at a better location. You can celebrate with a huge meal or small meal depending on your tax return or you can go to the tavern right across the parking lot to drown your sorrows. Like I said perfect location. It's like all H&R Blocks I have been too, Check in with the receptionist and have a seat on those tacky plastic chairs. At least coffee and water is provided. When called, you follow you tax consultant to their little cubicle and talk story. My recommendation, bring aspirin and tissue. I know if you have a W-2 and a couple of 1099s you get a simple tax return. That's what I use to do. Well if you are not fortunate to be simple (tax return not simple minded people) H&R Block has you covered. They explained every line and why or why not you couldn't count the credit. I like that fact that the computer screens are large and there is a remote monitor of your viewing. That way you don't have to each fight for a view of the screen. They also compare your returns from last year making sure you have all the forms and also making recommendation for the next year. I followed the advise I was given for 2017 returns from last March 2016 visit and it saved me a couple of bucks. Also I believe this is a training area after the tax season. There's another room (class room style) with about four rows of desk facing a whiteboard. And at each deck was a computer. I know the consultants go through yearly reviews for the upcoming tax season. It's piece of mind for me to know they have up to date info. Overall four stars. Service and people are great. What not five stars? Well I don't like the seats and who the heck likes paying taxes?!?!? Wait is that why I'm the first to review? Now excuse me, I got to gas up the car. Perfect location. Never. Again. Filed our taxes with these guys in April. They charged our card TWICE ($297.38 x 2), we call in to find out that this is normal & that it will only show up as "pending" on our bank statement for 5-10 business days... FIRST OF ALL, they didnt even tell us this information up front.. second of all: WRONG. The money was taken out of our bank account & we followed up after the 10 business days was up and we saw that they didnt put the money back yet. Only to find out that the tax refund itself was rejected & nobody notified us. Good thing I called! They start a claim for the money they stole ($300), we send them the bank statements showing it was charged twice, etc... & we were also able to figure out the rejected tax refund. They resubmitted it & i dont hear back. I'm thinking, "no news, good news" I call them after some time has passed because our tax refund didnt come yet AND we're still waiting for our $300 to be given back. ONLY TO FIND OUT that they need signatures from us in order to actually finish submitting the tax refund... so it wasnt even submitted yet... So the guy says hes gonna send the papers electronically.. i wait & we dont get the email. I call back AGAIN today and was told that they closed the claim for the $300, & the office that has to send me the signature papers isnt able to call me until 2 days later... its freaking JULY... thats 3 months since the start of this process. Cherry on top: they transfer me to their escalation to reopen the claim for the $300 they stole .. they answer and hang up on me..... so i have to call AGAIN. I am so frustrated. Not to be dramatic but I really feel like these people committed a crime against me & is giving me a hard time so they don't have to give me my money back... NEVER. AGAIN. DO NOT PASS GO. DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE YOUR $300! You'd probably be better off doing it yourself.. read more

Chiaki & Mary told me that I was not qualified to claim HOH even with a qualifying dependent. If they looked at my taxes for rhe last 5 or even 16 years I claimed HOH (1) I have a qualifying dependent (2) I pay rent & have a rental agreement so long story short I went to Autumn (#674-4211) and she amended the mistake Chiaki. I'm sorry to say but H & R Block is expensive just to do your taxes. Call Autumn (#674-4211) to do your taxes. Very scattered and unorganized. I deposited money prior to my appointment to make sure I could pay whatever fee for this service. The total was around $200; I deposited $500 prior and had to run my card 3x and for some reason it declined every single time. The process of getting my taxes done was faster than the payment process; none of the employees seemed to know what to do--which is really frustrating as I have other errands to run. Not sure if I'll be returning; TurboTax seemed much more convenient. read more

This complaint isn't personal, nor is it directed at the office or the tax pro either, this complaint is directed at the organization as a whole/itself - H&R Block. I had a tax appointment on March 14th to ensure I met the April IRS deadline. I was missing information, so I went home, gathered all required documents and uploaded to MyBlock account by March 30th. Since March 30th, I called four times asking for an update, and each time I called, I was asked if the requested documentation had been uploaded, which I politely mentioned all documentation has been uploaded and asked if there was anything further needed - the answer was no, that's it. Yesterday, May 20th, I received a notification from MyBlock account again asking for the requested documentation, and again I stated all documentation has been uploaded. I received a notification this morning, again from MyBlock account stating my taxes were complete and ready for my review. This is out of H&R Block's control here (or is it?) but when I went in to review and sign off on my taxes, I was told there were state specific issues with e-filing this year, so next I'd have to go to the post office to mail my taxes off - myself. Yes, I paid for that as well. Yet, I'm paying for a $400 late service. Not only that, but paying for a late service by H&R Block and late to meet the IRS deadline to file my taxes - and an expected 5% late fee from the IRS. To continue, I called H&R Block's customer service line to complain and question the service, but felt my complaints were being discredited. "Is that it?" "Ok, is that it?" "Have you been informed of a late IRS tax penalty?" My point is I shouldn't be in this situation in the first place spending so much time, effort, and money when I specifically went to an organization who is supposed to specialize in tax services but I'm doing more than half the work at this point. What "service" did I actually pay for? And to continue even further, when on the customer service call, I mentioned if a note could be put on my complaint that if I miss the call from H&R Block support that I need to call back or I need to find the time to reach out. Haven't I already called H&R Block enough about this process? Shouldn't the calls be made to me to follow up, multiple times, like I had to? When am I going to get paid, because it sounds like I'm on H&R Block's payroll. In review, my taxes were submitted today, May 21st. That is 68 days since my initial appointment with H&R Block, and 52 days since all my documentation was submitted. Is nearly two months late H&R Block's standard? Is paying nearly $400 for a late and subpar "service" a H&R Block standard? For those wondering what my next step/approach is and my recommendation, I'm in the process of requesting a refund. Maybe I'll get it, but I don't expect it from an organization such as this one. I'm expecting a life lesson and to move on. My recommendation is to not use H&R Block any further, I most certainly won't be. read more

My Husband and I had an appointment on Friday morning to meet with a tax specialist, we had met with her for a few minutes and she said that she would call us when she finished filling our tax documents, so we left all of our documents with her and expected a call in a few days which never came. I decided to follow up with her on Tuesday and when I called she said that she didn't have any record of us dropping the documents off and didn't remember us so my husband and I decided to go down to the office in person to see what was going on and when she saw us she said that she gave our tax documents to someone else, at this point I was very upset because no one had notified us that our documents was being handed to another agent. After asking which agent they said they don't know and they don't know where our files where, they had everyone in the office looking for our documents. I would not recommend this location and I wouldn't recommend going to see Cynthia. read more
