Native Landscapes & Gardens

Native Landscapes & Gardens

Our yard was getting a little out of control, and needed some serious attention. I got ideas and…read moreestimates from a few companies. Native was the best of the bunch for both. I had three major considerations: I wanted something very easy to maintain; I wanted native plants and flowers that would attract butterflies; and I wanted it to be enjoyable for all the wild critters who live in our yard. Marc is great - I love his vision, enthusiasm, and wealth of knowledge and experience in the field. He walked the property with me and pointed out what was native and what was invasive (I have very little horticultural knowledge), and how he thought different designs could improve the space in this way or that, depending on how we wanted to use it. He gave a bunch of options and ideas, and listened to what I wanted. It felt very collaborative, which was nice. And he is great at explaining things you don't quite understand. Marc and Matt and Colin, and several more workers whose names I didn't catch, came out to do the job on time on the assigned day, well-prepared. The weather was off-and-on rain, which didn't remotely slow down the crew. They were all working hard all day - you'll see from the photos there was a lot to do. In addition to a full yard cleanup which in itself was a beast of a job, they redesigned/redefined several beds, planted a perfect pollinator garden in the back that I have been wanting there for years, trimmed/pruned trees, shaped hedges, reshaped the backyard, mulched everything, and planted three beautiful young sweet bay magnolias out front. It was a big job and took two days. The crews were great - polite and hardworking, with no complaints even when they were getting soaked. Marc came by each day to meet with me, explain what was being done, and get my input. He also met with and worked with his crew, mapped out where everything was going. He was out in the pouring rain with his crew, unloading trees from the truck and doing whatever was needed. They were an impressive team. I am beyond thrilled with the results of all the hard work they did. And so excited to sit outside this summer enjoying it all. Thank you, Native. I look forward to our ongoing business relationship and future, further collaborations.

I met with John from Exscape Designs late spring 2014. I wanted a design for custom cedar fencing,…read moregate and plantings on both sides of my house. He seemed to be a very qualified landscape architect and had some interesting observations and suggestions. He said he would provide a rough estimate in about a week. However weeks later I had heard nothing. I contacted John and he said he would work on it right away and get it to me in another week. Weeks came and went again without a word. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt and certainly this estimate must be nearly done, afterall, I was not expecting a detailed design at this point, just an estimate, so left yet another message for him. Another week went by without even a courtesy call back, so I finally called the office and asked to speak to the owner. The owner contacted me within 24 hours and apologized and said this is not how they do business and this will be remedied immediately. He said they were extremely busy now as this was the height of the season but I explained to him I have been waiting for about six weeks now so he said John would get me the estimate. I also discussed doing some additional design work on an existing patio, but they indicated that as most of the design work was already completed, they were so behind, they would not be able to do it at this time, which I understood. I reminded them that I still wanted a ballpark estimate on the other work and that if they could get me an estimate and ensure it could be done by the fall I would be willing to wait. He said that would be perfect as they would not be busy in the fall. He thanked me for being so patient and indicated that John would get me that estimate so that the work could be done in the fall. But believe or not I never heard from either the owner or John after that phone call. Obviously a very disorganized place with little interest in customer service if the concept of reminders and return calls are so difficult. A perfect example of a contractor that repeatedly makes promises and totally underperforms. I was more than patient and was prepared to have an job close to 5 figures, but I guess that's not big enough for this company. Not to mention they wasted soooo much of my time and it was too late in the season to find someone else -- so unprofessional! Unless u have a job in the +20,000 range and r willing to accept lots of missed deadlines, don't use them!

They are also great to work with from an architect's point of view. They are good team players that are able to listen to everyone's wishlist or design intent and create a product that satisfies all. I would recommend this company and have worked directly with Mike and Bill but also hear wonderful reviews of John.
