It's always nice to find a shop like this one, where you can get help and advice on what to wear…read more They have a really good range of clothes at reasonable prices. It's easy to find your way around and the staff are very friendly and helpful.
I'm aware that I sometimes use these reviews as a bit of a confessional: Primark is a typical case…read morein point. It's definitely a bit of a guilty secret for me (secret rather than pleasure...). The guilt comes in on two levels - first: because I wonder about how their items are produced, when they sell them so cheaply, and second: because it's so easy to become lured into buying items you don't really need. Throw-away fashion and all that! I could launch into a whole debate about a consumer society but it's probably not the time or place... The upside of their stock, besides the accessibility of their prices, is the up-to-the-minute, bang-on-trend styling. The downsides are often the finish, the attention to detail (hardly surprising) and the way that sizes can vary greatly from one garment to another (even in the same style). Also, be aware that when they do produce a really 'hot' style you'll have to move fast or they'll fly-off the shelves before you can reach them.

Amanda's had been in Ashtead for many years before I moved here. I've found the staff very helpful…read morewithout being pushy. Being short I find separates easier to buy because waists are usually too low to fit me properly. I've bought at least 4 pairs of good quality trousers from this shop over the last 3 or 4 years as well as a jumper that has become my favourite and a very nice cardigan. They stock some pretty costume jewellery too. I should also point out that alterations are free which saves me a lot of work.

The sales…read moreassistant girl practically threw the shoes down in front of her and then she had to ask for a shoehorn. She went to get it and then practically threw it on the seat next to her. She did nothing to help her try the shoes on. My mother is in her 90s! And a regular shopper in Banstead. Small boutiques like this need good service to survive. The service at Fluke women's store Banstead was appalling.

The Ashley Centre is Epsom town's shopping centre. I can still remember the excitement when it…read morefirst opened in Epsom, heralding an era of shopping under cover and the building of the one way traffic system in Epsom. These days, it's on the small medium size with a House of Fraser being the only department store. There are mainly chain stores, my most visited being Marks & Spencer and a recently opened Boots, which took over the entire area of the previously open air Kings Shade Walk. There are a few quirky shops like Cook, which offers high qualitty ready prepared meals. The Ashley Centre car park doubles as the town car park in the evenings and is convenient for the Epsom Playhouse and nearby restaurant row, South Street. It's A-OK but no more than that.

The Emporium is the biggest of all the antiques shops in Bridge Road, and the most comprehensive. While it used to be even larger- it took up 3 floors of this grand building - it still is stuffed with an array of antique goodies. There are around 40 sellers in here, each person has their own stand - and their own style. So vintage watch clocks sit along side pop memorabilia which sit alongside 1950's tea sets. There is plenty of vintage fashion and jewellery in here as well. If you pop in, look for a stand owned by a girl called Kirsty - she has some glorious pieces on display. I spied some beautiful 1940's gloves when I was last here, as well as a couple of parasols from the 1950's.
I bought this Spode's antique milk jug. Very beautiful!

But for those who can afford the multi million pound homes - think the Chelsea football team and their birds, who all live around here - Bernard of Esher provides all the clothes that you will ever need for a Hello! or OK! photoshoot. Bernard, (don't call it Bernies, they don't like it) has been serving Esher residents for 30 years now. Its premise is that it gets in collections by the big guns - now that is not that unusual, but back when this was considered the sticks, ladies that lunched had to go to Knightsbridge, darling, to get their summer and winter wardrobes. So in the beautifully laid out shop you have got collections by the likes of Diane Von Furstenburg, Luella, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Vivienne Westwood (Red Collection) and Stella McCartney. Plus a separate room for bags, shoes and accessories. The stuff is gorgeous, no doubt about it; but I wouldn't bother coming in here unless you have serious cash to spend. They don't exactly roll out the red carpet if you look like you are only going to do a bit of window shopping. I swear one of the assistants thought I was a hobo/thief last time I came in (the raggedy parka I was wearing probably didn't help my cause). However, they do have a pretty comprehensive sale on about twice a year, and occasionally you can get the odd bargain.
