The staff was shocking; two girls were chatting and doing their best to ignore me. The manager was hovering around the floor, careful to avoid any customer who might require help or service. The queue at the till was ridiculously long. The store inside was in really bad shape, with shoes all over the floor. So I left without my bag. More money to me. And it will be a while before I go back in.

I purchased one of my favorite, no, my favorite most durable pair of dress shoes here on sale; Down from £275 to £105. Had they not been on sale, I probably would have ventured back into Harrod's to purchase its similar, albeit lesser constructed, look-a-like. Gotta love sales. Of course, having my feet massaged by the R&B Russian blonde bombshell saleswomen didn't hinder the sale. Amazing how they turn off the charm as soon as the card goes through, so only 4 stars.

When the Elmsleigh Centre in Staines was renovated, the Clarks shoe shop moved to another site…read morewithin the Centre and in the process lost a lot of it's ground space. This means that the selection of shoes is now really limited and moving around the shop to browse can be difficult. The staff aren't particularly interested in helping you. A good example of this is when I bought some sandals, got home and discovered they'd given me one Size 7 sandal and one Size 5 sandal. When I took them back the next day the manager wasn't very happy to sort this out and commented that I should take responsibility for it as I should have checked both shoes were the same size before leaving the shop. There isn't a great range of shoes to choose from due to the small size of the shop so you quite often see styles in magazines that you can't find in the Staines branch. Distinctly average.

I have always had an excellent experience at this Clarks store, they have welcoming and great staff…read moreand it is well-presented and run. I'm a big Clarks fan - been buying from them all my life, and more recently I have barely bought shoes from anywhere else(!). They are a little more premium than maybe some other shops in the high street, but the quality is usually outstanding. I have pairs of shoes from them - part of their 'UnStructured' brand - which have literally lasted years of almost everyday wearing. Anyway, unlike my usual experience with them, I had to return some faulty shoes where the sole had unglued itself. I had been putting it off, as I find these situations quite stressful, thinking I would have to argue my case as I couldn't find the receipt. But I was extremely pleasantly surprised. The regular staff were very understanding and shared my view that this was unusual quality for them. The manager first proposed that she would replace them - ordering in a new pair at the right size for next week - if I would just bring in a bank statement showing the sale. Hurrah I thought. However, when she went to order in the new pair, she realised that they out of stock for this particular shoe, and so then offered for me to exchange them right there and then for a new style. So - amazingly - I ended up literally walking out the shop with brand new lovely shoes, and they just took the old ones without receipt or receipt. This may have been quite unusual, but I am now even more of a fan and a very loyal customer to the Clapham Junction branch!
