I've been a designer and fabricator of furniture and sculpture for over forty-five years, so it wasn't difficult to start developing ideas. As I dreamed I began looking around for assistance with the process, and found Artisans Group. I didn't go to Artisans Group looking for an industry-leading eco-home. I came because I saw a couple of their projects and loved the clean modern style Tessa Smith and Randy Foster were putting together. They were realizing designs that seemed to me to be far beyond what other design/build groups were creating. Architecture has been a fascination most of my life, and what I saw in the lines and volumes Tessa was producing was a natural feel for proportions, for minimal and unique details, for the flow of life patterns in a home, and particularly for the play of light, natural and artificial, as it enhances and defines spaces and the experience of living. With Tessa and Artisans I got all of that plus a great experience of collaboration in design, and a house that always surprises me--because it is somehow more "me" than I would have designed by myself. It's a "world house," designed with details and technological solutions that are distinctly European and soundly ecological in a way that just makes sense. The house stays at comfortable temperatures with the air always fresh while using a tenth of the energy of my last house. The biggest surprise was when I moved in and found the experience to be more physically comfortable than I would have--or could have--imagined. The house seems to have its own body temperature, and wears like a glove. The Jewel Box (as we nick-named it during the design process) was designed to be a home and gallery. It has become a museum of my life's work and remains so comfortable and inspiring that I stay home wondering why I would want to be anywhere else. Considering it was in the middle of the pandemic it was completed very fast. About 6 to 7 months start to finish. Costs are always hard to manage on a project like this given so many unknowns, etc. It's impossible to nail down exact costs up front, but they did a good job of providing estimates. Adin sent monthly costs updates and met with me to discuss questions. Jason and Adin were creative in coming up with a couple design solutions to issues as they came up. The end product was a showpiece house that we're very pleased with.

It's not just a waterfall but a work of art that has transformed our building into a serene oasis. The design perfectly complements our building, and the sound of the flowing water is incredibly soothing. So many people took photos of our waterfall and asked me who built this. Some said they saw my photo in Germany and other countries on their social media to talk about how gorgeous the waterfall is. I am especially grateful for their pond maintenance. From start to end this company was incompetent and extremely unprofessional. I paid $15,000 for…read morelandscape design and installation. A dollar amount they said was pretty small for them so my job took on the feel of being more of an annoyance to everyone at the company. We start the prop with the designer showing up with no tape measure! This should have been a clue! Problems with incorrect sizes and material requirements rained supreme during this nightmare. Deposits were paid in September for an April start date, only to find out one day one of the project there would be delays because the required materials were not ordered. Oh by the way if they say you need 20 plants or 16 pavers and they only use 5 of each, they keep the rest. It's in the contract! Oh did I mention that if they stated you need 15 plants and you need 20 they will sell you the other 5 from inventory left over from other jobs! Yes, paid twice for the same plant! By the way, the plants they bring only have a warranty if you buy their installed sprinkler system for an additional cost. On and on and on it went! In the end I gave up, tired of fighting for what should have been common sense! Stay away from this company!!
