I was in the neighborhood, and was recommended to try out the gyro shack. I tried the gyro special, which comes with fries and a pop. The gyro was a big size and they wasn't skimpy with the meat. The restaurant was clean, good customer service, and a flat screen Tv for entertainment. They also have an outside patio, to enjoy your food on nice days. Omg omg. This food is so gross. It's literally inedible. I'm starving now and in the next 10 mins I know what I'll be : even hungrier. The gyro meat they use is absolutely disgusting. Fatty , greasy and has an off taste. Their slogan is "no one does gyros like us". Yeah they are right about that. I think they added just enough disinfectant cleaner to make this taste like the dried out rubber it is. Whatever seasoning they use needs to be stopped. IMMEDIATELY. Gyro plate came with one pita. I guess they know what they are doing. They figured this would go straight to the trash so the one pita is less garbage for the environment. Not to mention less punishment for the consumer. The cooks behind the counter are absolutely awesome. If you are a regular they remember your usual as you walk in the door. The beef tacos are excellent well honestly everything is excellent. I can honestly say I've never had a bad experience. The people at the register are always nice and friendly, they like to joke around and it's always welcome. This place appeals to all demographics - when I was there today, I saw both a guy with a giant neck tattoo and a dude in business clothes working on his laptop. It would appear that everybody loves good food at a great bargain. My advice is to round up some friends and order the gyro plate. For $6.99, you get a huge heap of meat, onions, tomatoes, feta cheese and kalamata olives with french fries buried under it. Order a few extra pitas and additional containers of sauce because this thing is designed to be shared. My coworkers and I managed to split it among five people and each of us had a gyro full of meat and toppings to enjoy. The appetizers are massive, too. For under $4, you get probably 20 or more fried mushrooms. The cheese fries arrive drowning in cheese sauce and have to be eaten with a fork - the mark of good cheese fries, in my book. Oh, but don't plan on eating there. There are only a few stools by the window and a handful of picnic tables outside. This is a definitely a "take it home and enjoy it" sort of joint. When they call it a shack, they're not kidding - that's the size it is. I can see some easily missing this as its literally a tiny shack in a part of town that might deter some out-of-towners due to the area, but its not as bad as it looks. Inside had classic sitting booths against the wall that you find in fast food joints. Menu was massive as they had gyros, burgers, poorboys, steak sandwiches, mexican, and even had a separate counter for ice cream and milkshakes. Got a gyro plate and a baklava for $11. The guy's voice at the counter sounded like James Earl Jones. You might want to ask for extra pitas as you can easily make 4 sandwiches with the amount of meat/tomato/onion that's given. We stopped at the Gyro Shack on our way through town because of the yelp reviews. The food was amazing. Super yummy and TONS of it. In fact we were a family of four and only ordered two gyro plates because everyone talked about how much food they gave you. Well one plate would have been more than enough. The food was delicious and much better than the atmosphere would suggest. You will want to order more pita and also bring a friend or two to share. I just had my first Gyro from Gyro Shack and it won't be my last! The meat is so flavorful and tender. The gyro plate comes with an obscene amount of meat! Easily the best Gyros in the Joliet area. The Gyros meat isn't burnt or dry, the fries are crispy and you get feta cheese and olives in addition to the onions and tomatoes. I say crew as the same two gents have been manning the kitchen the whole time....,that speaks of loyalty and taking care of your people. From the obvious family feeding gyro plate to the cold subs (sliced to order )....it has all been great. Sure they may double dip his fries once and awhile but not since he started using the coated fries and isn't that par for a great little greasy spoon. Btw my personal fave is the Maxwell St. polish ...he is the ONLY guy in the city to do it right. Grilled/fried with grilled onions, mustard and sport peppers.
