This review is specific to Open Gym!
We went on a Saturday, and were surprised to find that they were about to close admissions because they were full. The parking lot wasn't full, there was no line, and they gym didn't look full, but they must have a specific number they won't go over. I heard the staff telling several groups behind us that they were full, and that they set limits based on what their staff can handle.
The up side is that it was less crowded than some other open gyms we've been to.
The equipment seems to be new-ish and in good condition, and there are plenty of chairs for parents. There is plenty of equipment, and a nice variety with a reasonable layout. One downside is that they had left the preschool-sized obstacle course in place, even though this gym time was for kids over 6. It would have been nice to have that floor space available.
In contrast to other open gyms, this one seemed to be full of actual gymnasts - more like open practice time than open gym. Luckily my kid is also an active gymnast who wanted to practice so she fit right in.
BUT during open gym time they also had one of their teams doing actual team practice in the same space at the same time, which meant that whatever the team was using was unavailable to the other kids. Which is not really cool when you pay for *open* gym time.
So, remember how they limit the number of kids to what their staff can handle? Given that they were at capacity, I expected to see their staff actively supervising kids - and maybe stretched a little thin, even - they were at capacity, after all. But no. Two of the staff were sitting down talking to each other the entire time. They occasionally spoke to kids about safe behaviors, but only kids who were within easy hearing distance.
The real bummer was that the staff seemed to be selectively enforcing the rules. I don't know for sure what the difference was, but it looked like the kids who were allowed to do more were kids they knew. One could argue that that's a reasonable distinction to make, but it still sucks for the outsider kids.
So bottom line: it's a nice gym environment, and probably great if you're a member who knows the staff. If you can get in, of course. We may or may not be back, depending on whether the kid remembers the fun or the disappointment more. And if you're a newbie with kids who just need to blow off steam, I would go somewhere else. read more
