This is a bit of a random one! Everyone sort of knows what they are getting with big chain…read moresupermarkets. They try but to make themselves as attractive as possible with deals and convenience but to be honest there isn't that much competition on this side of town. There's two Tesco stores within about a mile radius of this shop but that's all I can think of. We decided to visit Asda on Monday evening for a wee change from the norm and I have to say I was impressed, well as impressed as you can be with a supermarket. Ok so what's different and why should you go! Well, as boring as it sounds there is good parking an ATM and it's easy to get to. Next up the choice. It seems like Asda has really stepped up it's game in terms of fresh fruit and veg and meat. They have outsourced their butchers counter here to McGee's, a local brand and they provide fresh cuts of meat for decent prices. It's kind of like a throwback to the bygone days where people would shop local - suppose this is the closest we can get in a supermarket. Few other points to make, they sell booze and often have good deals on. There's also an electronics and clothing section selling all the usual suspects. All in all a good store - I don't think I have ever said I am a fan of a supermarket before but on this occasion I am!

I used to shop here frequently but have found myself less inclined to call in since the changes. North Belfast doesn't have the best selection of supermarkets though and this would be one of the larger options unless you head out to Glengormley/Newtownabbey

I'm a fan of their vegetarian foods and Sainsbury's own brand items (love Sainsbury's Nut Cutlets and veggie mince). They have the best labelling of all the supermarkets with all their own brand products clearly labelled as to whether or not they are vegetarian or BUAV approved (not tested on animals). In addition their brand match scheme ensures you don't pay more with Sainsbury's than with another supermarket. As per Sainsbury's website "When you buy ten or more different products, we'll tot up the comparable brands in your basket. If you could have paid less at Asda - even because of the deal - we'll give you a coupon for the difference off your next shop." I always use my brand match vouchers at my next Sainsbury's grocery shop. Plus their wine selection is superior to all other supermarket selections. Quality store with unbeatable prices, pleasant to browse and lovely, helpful staff. Perfect. At Christmas and New Year Sainsbury's have a special range of fabulous food you can order and collect in store, I would especially recommend the: *Three nut roast with cranberry sauce *Butternut & mushroom en croute *Limoncello buche de Noel If you want indulgent, treat foods try Sainsbury's 'Taste The Difference' range. This blows every other supermarkets 'luxury' items clean out of the water. Definitely the best you'll get, bar none.

The supermarket has all the stuff you would expect and more, and is a good place to get all your weekly shop done. They have a very large fruit and veg section, complete with salad bar if you are that way inclined, with a very large delicatessen meat and cheese counter. The store also has a large range of magazines, books, CDs, DVDs and games, and is always worth a check for a better price if you are about to buy a recently released item from HMV. As for the rest of the store there is a large range of everything as you would expect. The store has its own cafe which is good for pacifying those who have been dragged along or those who have worked up a hunger in their arduous shopping trip! The store also has installed self scanning machines, which is a real boost to customers as they can get in and for a few items much faster than in the past! I will sign off with a tip: try the white chocolate and cranberry cookies from here. You will not find a better cookie from any supermarket, pinky promise!

So I then had to go outside use the on site ATM and withdraw £20 (they didn't have any tenners) for a 98p drink! Surely it's time to accept card for all sales? The shop itself is actually quite good, it's in the heart of student Belfast so it stocks all the essentials, party snacks, energy drinks, pot noodles, ready made sandwiches. It also has a coffee machine and as mentioned an ATM on site! Losing a few stars for their ridiculous card rule!

Additionally they have a coffee machine and stock freshly baked croissants, pastries and cakes. There are a lot of other items too - magazines, stationary, prepackaged sandwiches, fruit, ready meals, bread, confectionary, household cleaning products, painkillers, deodorants and shower gels etc. Much better laid out than a lot of similar shops and the prices are reasonable, plus there's an ATM outside. Only one drawback exists - this Spar is located near Queen's University and in a main student residential area, hence it's swamped with customers during uni term time. Can be extremely busy, especially around midday.

There is a decent selection of fresh produce although stock control isn't always the best so dates need to be checked before buying. There are regular offers available instore and certainly a great spot to pick up top ups to a main shop. At the back of the store is a Subway, a new addition at the front of the store is a self service barrista bar which provides a half decent cup of coffee on the go. Another recent addition is an icecream station, I've yet to try it but certainly seems to be popular with local kids. Staff are generally friendly although there are a few that don't seem to have any interest in being there and it shows. They also sell a selection of coal, gas canisters and plants. Top up machine instore for bus cards, gas, electricity etc. Outside is a reasonable carpark although some of the markings have been redone at an odd angle and can make manoeuvres tricky unless you have a small car.
