My journey with Gurnick Academy was not a straight path. I initially enrolled at the Sacramento campus, but I was distracted by life and did not take my education as seriously as I should have. I ended up failing during my prerequisite courses, leaving me with a $1,500 debt that I had to repay before I could try again. When I decided to return to nursing school, I carefully researched my options and chose the Modesto campus. Although both campuses were about 40 miles from where I lived, the commute to Modesto felt more manageable. More importantly, the Modesto campus felt like home. The support I received from the instructors and administrators went far beyond academics. They not only taught me how to become a nurse, but how to become a good nurse. Those lessons will stay with me throughout my career and for the rest of my life. My biggest piece of advice to future students is simple: read the books. Do not rely solely on Quizlet or shortcuts. Read the chapters, take handwritten notes, and put in the work. I am not the smartest person in the room, but I worked hard and gave this program my full effort. I want to express my sincere appreciation to Tu, Mr. Bennie, Ms. Laura, Amber, both Stephanies, and Stephanie at the front desk, who always answered my questions and every phone call. I am especially grateful to Stephanie Kelly, my first clinical instructor, as well as Ms. Maria, MJ, Ms. Nisha, and Tina, the nurse at my clinical site. Please read before enrolling. I have just graduated from this LVN program, and I can honestly say that throughout the entire 12 months, the program was extremely unorganized. Module 1 was by far the most difficult not because of the material itself, but due to poorly prepared instructors who did not seem knowledgeable about what they were teaching, along with administration that relied heavily on fear and intimidation rather than support. Module 2 continued with the same issues. When I reached out for help regarding a class concern, I contacted Mr. Baca, the VN coordinator, and received a very cold, dismissive response. There was no compassion, no guidance, and his demeanor was unprofessional, rude, and insincere. This lack of support was consistent throughout the program. Module 3 was overall the easiest academically; however, the Med-Surg 2 instructor was frequently absent and displayed petty behavior, which further reflected the program's lack of structure and accountability. Module 4 was the one exception. Dawn, the OB instructor, was exceptional--she is one of the most passionate and dedicated nurses I have ever met. Ms. Charmaine, the instructor thats a NICU nurse was also outstanding and truly amazing. These two instructors were the highlight of the program and the only ones who genuinely cared about student learning and success. Along with Jay the clinical instructor, he holds a lot of passion for what he does. I did pass the exit exam and have completed the program. I would only recommend this school to individuals who are 100% committed to becoming a nurse, highly resilient, and capable of navigating a program with minimal support. I recently completed my LVN program (VN-90) at Gurnick Academy, Modesto location, and I am very grateful for this experience. The program offers a detailed and well-structured syllabus with excellent clinical exposure. The variety of clinical facilities helped me effectively connect theory with real nursing practice. The instructors are experienced, dedicated, and bring different teaching styles, which made learning engaging and meaningful. I would like to personally appreciate Ms. Mandeep Kaur for her excellent Med-Surg lectures and deep understanding of physiology. Ms. Dawn Hayek delivered outstanding OB lectures; her teaching style, expressions, and clinical insight made her lectures more valuable than textbooks. Ms. Laura impressed me with her energy and experience-based Pharmacology teaching. Ms. Charmaine brought strong expertise in PEDS and NICU, adding depth to her lectures. Mr. Phil Waymire played a key role during MOD IV and Capstone by helping tie everything together. His SIMS knowledge and rationales truly empowered students. I also appreciate Ms. MJ, Ms. Jess, and Ms. Ashita for being kind, supportive, and knowledgeable. The clinical instructors were exceptional. Ms. Antonieta Largoza is thorough and disciplined, ensuring strong fundamentals. Ms. Linda White is passionate and inspiring, and Ms. Alicia Grigsby has a unique teaching style with excellent student camaraderie. Special thanks to Ms. Tu (Director) for her coordination with students, Mr. Benne (VN Coordinator) for always advocating for students and resolving issues promptly, and Mr. Jay and Ms. Brenda (Clinical Coordinators) for their constant support and responsiveness. I also appreciate Mr. Tony (Security) for maintaining a safe and caring environment. Kudos to Ms. Kari, Ms. Sharjani, Mr. Veneet, Ms. Lori, and Ms. Edail Odisho for their continued support. My classmates were caring and supportive throughout the program, and I truly witnessed the nurturing spirit of future nurses among them. As a constructive suggestion, adding tutors with strong clinical and pathology-based knowledge could further enhance student understanding and learning outcomes. I'm currently in Module 2 of the LVN program at Gurnick Academy of Medical Arts and I truly have had such a positive experience so far. The staff and instructors genuinely care about their students and want to see us succeed. Mr. Bennie has been incredibly helpful throughout the program. He is very professional, always answers questions, and takes the time to guide students through any challenges. No matter what comes up, he always finds a way to help us out and make sure we stay on track. Ms. Brenda is truly an angel on earth. She is compassionate, supportive, and always encourages us when things get stressful. Her kindness makes such a difference during nursing school. Ms. Paula is an amazing teacher who explains concepts clearly and helps students feel confident in the material. She pushes us to do our best while still being supportive and understanding. This school is honestly pretty amazing don't let the 2-star reviews fool you. I just finished the VN program, and you truly get out of it what you put into it. If you can make it past Module 1, the rest of the program is cake. Fundamentals of Nursing is what takes most people out, not because it's impossible, but because it forces you to completely rewire how you think and develop real critical-thinking skills. A lot of students get discouraged or self-conscious and quit early, but I promise you can do it. If you're reading this and want to be a nurse: you can do it. Study smarter, not harder. Tools like NotebookLM helped me a lot it can turn lectures and notes into podcasts and even generate ATI-style practice questions from your PowerPoints. Once you understand the why behind the material, everything clicks and becomes so much easier. Ms. Nisha is amazing and offers math tutoring, which was a huge help. (Generally, I know people struggle with math for the Dosage Calculations) Overall, the school really does work with you to the best of their ability you just have to show up, put in the effort, and not quit. My only real wish is that they offered an RN bridge program. Instead of running 4 VN programs a year (with morning and afternoon cohorts), I'd love to see 3 VN programs and 1 RN bridge program added annually. read more

Okay I waited for a while to think about what i was going to write about my experience. Although I made the best of my time at Gurnick MODESTO CAMPUS (LVN program), I can't recommend it based on how the school is run. From start to finish, students are kept in the dark about financial aid, clinical placement, and what to expect throughout the program. The overall energy is very "because I said so," with little transparency. They enforce nit-picky rules like sending students home if their shoes have a tiny hole or if you have nail polish on -- yet students have shown up drunk at clinicals or on campus with zero repercussions. Important policies are vaguely written, while other rules are just made up on the spot depending on who you ask. Clinical instructors during my time were amazing -- supportive, knowledgeable, and truly invested in students. But classroom instructors were hit-or-miss. Some were great, but others were honestly the worst professors I've ever had. The biggest issue is that several had no real floor experience or had gone straight into administration after getting licensed. When you ask questions, don't be surprised if you get, "I don't know, look it up," for topics they should be teaching. In the morning classes there were tons of complaints of the professors teaching one subject but then giving tests that don't match. My class was given the wrong final before and all of us failed miserably. Career services is another disappointment. The "job placement help" they promise is basically sending you a screenshot of Indeed job postings. Later, they'll ask for your NCLEX results and license number, as well as where you're working -- not to help you, but so they can get credit for your job placement. I also overheard Kari Rose trying to steer applicants into programs they didn't want just because the ones they applied for were full. On top of that, there's constant teacher drama and classroom drama. Luckily, my cohort was incredible -- we supported each other and worked together to survive what was otherwise a hectic, disorganized program. Honestly, the best part of Gurnick was the classmates I met and the fact that I finished. With a positive mindset and a good group you can make it through! I went in made friends achieved a 3.7 gpa and passed nclex the irst try and it was with hard work and studying and using ALOT of outside resources! If you're considering enrolling, go in with your eyes open: you'll likely get through, but it'll be in spite of the school, not because of it. read more

I was interested in being a student here but had a couple questions about career direction , FAFSA , things like that . I've called to try to speak to an advisor or counselor many many times (different times and days) , left many voicemails , spoken to the ladies that answer the phones that promised a call back .... 3 weeks now and nothing still . Not even an acknowledgment that my messages are being received or passed on . If I can't even get a simple phone call back from someone to ask a few questions for 3 weeks , it just shows me what communication is going to be like at this school .. probly not a good fit then I suppose . I have made many detours in life and one detour led me to do the LVN program at Gurnick Academy. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be taught by some of the best instructors in class and in clinicals. I was given more guidance and support than I expected. The campus director took the time to check in with me and my progress. I recently completed the program and I passed my exit exam and NCLEX-PN on my 1st attempts. For someone who got out of high school and is autistic, I want to say whatever path you choose, please go for it. If you're like me, don't waste your time going to accelerated programs. Anything can happen during accelerated courses. I'll explain. I was in a class of nearly 44 students and about 2 weeks before the first module ended, 4 left or dropped out. I came in earliest out of all classmates so I could study and passed my first mod. Now, the second module was GOD awful. It made me wish I read the reviews before even enrolling into this school. No direction, last minute emails, disorganization all around. We went through 3 teachers and about 2 substitutes. Med-Surg was the WORST and clinicals was purely depressing. I want to express my concern, but hell, even one teacher who's at clinical sites at 4AM went to help teach our Med-Surg class which was at PM. I tried everything in my willpower to study hard and grasp what I could but how could I if all the instructors did was release us early or just didn't do a one-on-one? I understand not everybody is going to hold your hand, but this program and its material isn't easy. It didn't feel fair considering we pay so much for this program. I cried every night knowing I couldn't get sufficient help. Oh yeah. If you fail more than one class, you're expelled too. Which is what happened to me. They could have told me during my break, but they told me just before what would be my third module is about to start. After hearing the news, I called the front desk almost everyday to see if anybody was available to talk and finally! Someone spoke to me. What baffles me is that I was told I could re-enroll in September, but I missed the re-enrollment date in July. If I wanted to re-enroll, I had to pay $8k upfront. No way. Why would some teachers get annoyed off the fact their students are asking for help and send emails about it? Or when they have to use resources like computers or books or printers? Why would a teacher pull me into their office to tell me that nursing wasn't for me? That's looking down on me and I'm disgusted. I hope these instructors become more passionate about teaching if people are paying about $36k. If you are looking to get into a nursing program, go somewhere else. These people only care about the money and not their students. How this school is still even in operations is way out of my mind. read more

I was personally injured permanently by my instructor during the phlebotomy course. She went fishing and punctured my tendon so bad the entire class heard the "pop". I have since been in constant pain and diagnosed with rheumatoid issues in my right arm. It has made life harder and I was never compensated nor apologized to from the administration or Dean. Do not trust instructors at this facility, you never know who is willing to harm another by malfeasance. This school withdrew me so I could come back when they had more clinical sites (I only had 2 modules left) & I called a lot over 6 months & they never got back to me. I attended for like 2 years & have nothing to show for it because they aren't accredited (probably due to how terrible they are) & so I moved & have to start all over. Dont! Waste! Your! Time!! Giving the one star because of Bennie, Jay, Kayla, and Celia- this school deserves NONE but at least those instructors HELPED. I was VN54 and since we were online for the whole entire didactic part besides the 6 weeks we got out of MOD 2,3,&4 for clinicals due to COVID we had no help from the teachers or support. They would let us go early and you honestly have to teach yourself besides the teachers names I put I 100% know they did their best and they have helped me understand the topics. I had instructors who would just give 100% on head to toes when I know I missed stuff!! They were over this as much as we were and not to mention gurnick's graduation rate is below 60%. This school sends emails last minute you never know what's going on until either the night before or later in the day on that same day!! Also they tell you you get three tries for the Exit Hesi Exam right:..wrong- depending on your score from the three specialty exams you take like three weeks prior depends on if you get three chances because you have to pass VN440 with an 80% So i only got two tries for the Exit Hesi. So frustrating they have multiple programs going on so they literally all are over the place and they are so CHEAP which they get around 35,000 from just the vocational students...They don't provide us caps and gowns for when we graduate. They just supply us with a Sash and Pin...Like seriously? Ugh! I'm so glad i'm done with this school and program! If I could rate this school any less I def would! I had the worst experience with this school. I did not agree with how our teacher taught us in class and for that reason many many many of us did not pass onto the program. We were told that we needed to pay an additional 2k in order to retake the class. I feel robbed in so many ways, as I trusted this school from the get go. I contacted the dean tu left multiple msgs she never responded but she did with other classmates and seems to be very rude. This is from the perspective of an LVN Student who completed the whole program here at Gurnick in Modesto: This has honestly been such a great experience and the instructors here want you to pass. It's not all of money like some of these negative reviewers are saying, majority of them did not attend the program or only took the entrance exam and stopped. You actually have to stay up to pace with the program though since it is a fast program. Honestly, my favorite two people who have been there for me through stressful times and worked with me as counselors were Tu (the campus director) and Anita. Like I said, they actually WANT THE STUDENTS TO PASS. Trust me I've been through crazy situations, but they've always managed to help me through it. They give you different options and are always positive; yes, I read a couple reviews of the strictness of the school, but you honestly have to be. Before you sign up to attend Gurnick, they give you a policy and agreement to sign, which are the rules they go by. I love how the atmosphere is at the school and they are still building and adding! I highly recommend going to Gurnick, it's probably one of the best vocational schools around this area. I made the jump into the VN program at Gurnick in 2018. Kari was my Admissions Advisor and she was wonderful. She always answered my questions and was there to help. I completed prerequisites and was accepted into the program to start in 2019. The Financial Aid rep (I can't remember his name, sorry) was super laid back but super informative. It made the "money talk" way easier and less stressful. All of my instructors were so great! I probably sound like a broken record, but it's the truth. In the middle of Mod 4, I needed to have surgery and had to take a leave. The behind the scenes people made the transition super simple. Then COVID hit and we had to go online. I have to commend Jay LVN, one of the Clinical Instructors. He did his best to keep the long clinical days interesting even though we had all the busy work we had to do. The program director and her assistant, Angel, are always available to students. They really care. I graduated, passed the HESI and NCLEX first time (because no matter what anyone says, they do prepare you) and started working in Home Health as an Intake LVN. This is a fast paced school, I joined their Medical Assistant program back in February 2021. I am now graduating, the instructors are competent and help you out a lot especially during lab. Most of the book learning you will do on your own. I'm a veteran and used my GI bill to pay for the whole program, there was a little hick up from the finance department on getting my VA benefits pay but they resolved it in a timely manner. read more

I had a great experience with my vocational nursing program. What I mean by that is aside from the normal life ups and downs and being in a classroom full of females, I made the most of my education and came out as a vocational nurse graduate with a bonus of some life long friends I met along the way. There are so many complaints about this school but honestly, after three associates degrees from community colleges in California, ALL CAMPUSES ARE LIKE THAT! There are amazing instructors and not so great ones. There are great days and not so great ones. Homework is homework and exams always suck! Are you here to throw a temper tantrum because you didn't get away with breaking the rules or are you trying to get your education to be a nurse?! That's the real question! And all these reviews I've been reading make me laugh having gone through the program myself. February 2020 graduate, it was one hell of a ride and I'm so happy I chose Gurnick! I decided to do the Dental Assisting Program after many years of being interested. I went to Gurnick, talked to Nina and she walked me through everything I needed to know for the program. She even introduced me to the teacher Bega. The first day was exciting and nervous all at the same time. You're given a lot to do right away and it seems overwhelming, but if you stick with it, it'll get easier! The teacher Bega is amazing!!! She teaches you so you can relate, not just dental terms. If you need extra help she is always there and will make time for you. The other girls in the office and all areas of the school are very helpful too. I would recommend this school to anyone I know. I read other views that were good but mostly bad. I don't intend on devaluing or invalidating the bad reviews; however, my experience here has been, overall, a B+ to an A-. I have been to some "traditional" colleges around the country and this state. I know, setting emotions aside, that this was by far the best. I don't think I had the displeasure to come across a rude instructor or staff. I did come across the aforementioned whom would speak candidly. Something that I welcome because of my life experience. The program that I attended, LVN, is a program that should be noted as difficult but also rewarding. Going to the school I was expecting not to finish--to be honest with you-- because I was expecting a similar experience from other traditional/trade schools. I would recommend going here and in the same breath state: don't take everything personally, be zealous about your grades and be welcoming to some criticism ( it is not meant to hurt or deter anyone but make the best nurse--in my case). Above all be communicative to your classmates, instructors, and administrators. Currently a student in the DA program with Ms. Bega & Mr. Martinez. I didn't really know what to expect going into the program but from the first day I visited for orientation to now actually attending daily classes I am by far very happy about the decision to join Gurnick! The hands on practice is so helpful and defiantly what I needed in a school. The teachers and staff are all very kind and helpful in every way possible. First off, I want to say I graduated from this school August of 2017 from the Medical Assistant Program. Now for my explanation of the 3 Star rating. My first day here we found out we were suppose to receive our Scrubs 2 weeks before hand, but no one was emailed or notified. Which was already one downside of the communication aspect of this place. Now let us slide into a few months in. On the website under the Medical Assistant Program it clearly states that we will become a Certified Phlebotomist. Little did we know our campus (Modesto) did not provide this service. And my classmates and I would keep bugging Jeff about the situation and it didn't take until we GRADUATED for them to allow us to go take the Phlebotomy class in CONCORD! Like really? And the downside that our tuition includes the Phlebotomy classes and I haven't gotten any notice of getting any of that money back. BEST OF ALL During my Externship we are required to turn in Time sheets on our hours. I kept emailing my instructor and no response. I then texted my instructor and she notified me that she got let go right before we went into our Externships. AND NO ONE told us. I was the one who emailed the school and they then emailed my classmates about this matter. During our "Graduation" we were to arrive 30 minutes early. There was no set up, no practice, no telling us where to go. With my last name starting with "A" I literally went up took my piece of paper and asked the person handing it to me "Where do I go? Do you want me to stay on stage or go down?" Last of all we never met the new instructor and she was the one who led our Graduation like come on? YOU DO NOT KNOW US. It was just a mess and I am glad I'll further my education ELSEWHERE. Now all I have is my monthly payment for a school that wasn't even worth going to. read more

DON"T GO HERE... these people are not willing to help anybody.. all they care about is the money. Phlebotomy class is starting within a week after registration day.. and for those people like me that are getting the money from 401k to pay for tuition.. 1 week is not enough time to process everything and pay the tuition fee... I ve been waiting since March to enroll, and everytime i called to find out the dates to register.. they never knew when the next class was starting.... Plus they say one thing first & then they forget what they said.. they want half of the tuition on the first day of class, & if u don t have it, they drop you right away. But these people don t realize that they re giving you only 1 week after registation to get the your funds to pay for school. At first they were willing to help... and now that registation started, all of a sudden they won't wait a couple days after the first class to get all my paperwork poccess with my 401k to get the money. I just wasted my time with these people... They give false information, very unorganized and not helpful at all. They should spend more time and money to train their employees. Not even the director "Savia" could help me.. she's rude and won't return calls when you leave msgs... By the way after reading the previous review.... I contacted Gurnick to inquire about the VN program, and the front desk admin were always very sweet. Leslie (the rep) was so helpful and nice. She answered all of my questions, and fit me into her schedule very fast. NOW to where my HORRIBLE experience began: the financial aid coordinator..Felicia she was rude, and seemed irritated by every question I asked her. She kept avoiding seeing me, saying that it was a waste of time that I didn't have to see me yet. She never returns any phone calls, or emails. It seems like you're bothering her when all you need is help (isn't this her job?). Because of her, (one sour apple in the whole batch) I am now attending Institute of Technology at least they were willing to help! Honestly, I'm paying over $30k to attend school, and I would expect at LEAST decent treatment. IF YOU CAN PLEASE LOOK ELSEWHERE! Or request a different financial aid person. She's the WORST! I went here to learn about their LVN Program and what it had to offer. You will not get a tour of their school. My appointment was for me to take a placement test. It was the most ridiculous test filled with riddles and parables. Then when she told me I passed, and that it would be a $75 application fee, I thought really? I'm paying you to tell me if I can attend your school? They seriously make you feel like they are about to do you a favor, and this school is not cheap. Gurnick in Concord has awesome reviews. No Stars from me if I didn't have to put one. read more

I was an applicant from Fresno CA for the MRI program. The staff was completely rude, disrespectful, and incompetent. I took over three days off of work to travel to the campus. On the first meeting, the staff was late coming back from lunch by an hour and a half. The second and third time, the interviewer failed to show up at all for the meeting. The receptionist suggested that I just come back the following Monday and hopefully she would show up. (As if I could just take off another full work day on a whim and travel for four hours for a fifteen minute meeting where the interviewer MIGHT show up as agreed.) I told the receptionist that this treatment was unacceptable and that their incompetence had cost me over $600 in lost wages and gas. I suggested that the interviewer contact me via phone or skype and it was agreed upon. Though it was agreed upon, it was not honored, and my phone call merely consisted of being told that I would need to come in for an interview pending my fafsa results, which had been received, but that the financial aid adviser would be on vacation until an unknown date. Annoyed, I wrote a letter to the director of staff at Gurnick's main campus. She apologized and promised to contact me to straighten things out, but then failed to call me or return my calls for over six months. If you are a respectable student who values a true education from competent individuals, please do yourself a favor and pass on this institution. Frankly, I do not understand how they even keep their doors open. After seeing the reviews on both Yelp and Google, I can see that I am not the only applicant who was treated in such a manner, and won't be the last either. read more

This school is well worth your time and money! Yes it's fast and stressful and no I didn't care for every teacher but in the end I reached my goal. I paid a small amount at enrollment about 1,000 I could have made payment on that but chose not to. I also made small monthly payment of 250/mo until I graduated. I went four nights a week from 6pm-10pm The pre-req's were included and over in a month. The entire program was over in about 14 months. Its really what YOU make of it. I more than doubled my income and can continue on to my BSN now! Help was there when I needed it and if you go to learn you will learn! I loved it, I made a lot of new friends and I had fun too! I loved the staff and wouldn't change a thing! My experience was awesome. If you want to be a nurse go to Gurnick and just do it! read more

Warning!! Future Students: This school took my $1600 and did not let me into the core program. After stating you had to pass pre reqs with 80% they let students in with a lower grade than mine to fill seats and make more $$. After a month of unanswered phone calls to Sabia, Margie and Jeff to ask why I wasn't chosen,I went down there unexpected. While waiting in lobby I witnessed a female nursing student being asked to leave the school or the cops would be called. Just like me she just wanted to ask questions and had concerns. After waiting a hour to see Jeff and Sabia they gave me 10 minutes of silence and my questions and concerns went unanswered. I am 46 years old and I have never witnessed such rudeness, unprofessionalism and disregard to helping students reach their goals in becoming a nurse. After no explanation to why I wasn't chosen the meeting was unsuccessful and they threatened me with security. Really!! Cops, security is this how you treat your paying students Sabia?? Maybe treating your students with respect by returning our calls and emails, answering our questions when we have concerns would of been more helpful!!! Institute of technology or Brightwood college both have LVN programs starting soon and do not charge $1600 for pre reqs then drop you for no reason! Good luck in your pursuit of becoming a nurse. Please do your homework before choosing this school. Its a lot of money to not feel safe and supported by the campus director Sabia or Margie LVN director or Jeff their assistant. I will be filing a formal complaint with the higher education board, BBB, and meeting with a lawyer to try to get my money refunded. Please feel free to contact me if you have had a similar experience. Hopefully together changes can be made and future students will never experience such treatment. gurnick academy is a great school of opportunity i would highly recommend this school to anyone trying to succeed in life with any of the careers they offer. i took the phlebotomy class and was finished in no more than 10 weeks and experienced a great time while working towards my goal at the school. Great teachers and staff all there to help you get to where you want to be. read more

I had a very pleasant experience at Gurnick thanks to the amazing staff of teachers (tracee..saudia..anne...phil and june) and the office staff especially Leah supported me the entire time and even after graduation. Their career services and support helped tremendously. The curriculum and nclex prep got me ready for the Nclex...the only thing is...if you didn't show up for classes and labs...you missed alot...so if you chose to attend Gurnick. ..make it worth your time and money and they will prepare you for your future as a nurse!!
