Feeling very disappointed in Gurney's right now. Weeks ago, I ordered a Carmine Jewel dwarf cherry tree from you. I had the option of ordering from you or several other nurseries and chose you because you have such a good reputation (in spite of your prices being higher than elsewhere). My ship date kept getting pushed back, so I reached out to your customer service to find out whether or not I was actually going to receive the tree (since I had already received the Romeo dwarf cherry I ordered). Later that day, I checked my order status again and the Carmine Jewel was no longer showing on the "to be shipped" list (although the invoice total remained the same). After multiple attempts to reach your customers service, I finally received a response to my emails today letting me know that they are out of stock and I won't be receiving my tree. Had someone let me know sooner, I could have tried to order from somewhere else, but now everyone else is out of stock too. If my order was accepted weeks ago and the only reason it hadn't shipped yet was my planting zone, it seems incredibly unfair that you would sell a tree that I already purchased. I guess northern buyers need to be aware that with our planting dates so late in the spring, we may or may not receive the plants we order from Gurney's. EDIT: I just spent time reading post after post after post from other frustrated Gurney's customers. What happened to this company? My grandmother and mother and aunt all swore by them. Theya lways said their seeds were the best around and that they were an honest company. My mom is the reason that I chose to buy my cherry trees from Gurney's rather than one of the many cheaper places. When I told her the price difference, her response was "it will be worth it when you have a successful planting and don't waste a year or two growing something that won't live or won't produce." Well, I've wasted a year anyway and have no chance of having success since I didn't even receive the dang plant I ordered. (Not to mention, I still haven't been credited for the unshipped plant.) read more

I decided to give this nursery a chance since they are only 2hrs from me. They forgot to mail one onion set and they sent them after a call. However, of the asparagus, peppers, tomatoes, and seeds did not survive. One pepper plant is still being babied and unlikely to bare fruit this year, and the others couldn't even revive with care and attention. So I gambled and it did not pay off. I have had to repurchase at local nursery's and won't be ordering again. read more

I spent over $400.00 on two 5ft Arborvitae trees and despite planting them right away and in good soil, and watering them with a drip system, the trees started dying right away. I contacted Gurney's and was told they were just going through transplant shock and not to worry, that they had a one year guarantee and I would be refunded if the trees died. The trees did indeed die, however when I contacted Gurney's for my refund they kept giving me the run around, claiming I hadn't sent them the pictures of the dead trees despite the fact that my send folder confirmed the pictures were attached to the emails I sent Gurney's and resent four times, then Gurney's blamed it on their email system. As a customer, I have no control over their email system and if it doesn't work properly, that is Gurney's responsibility to fix. I will now file a complaint with my bank. I will NEVER buy anything from Gurney's ever again and I will warn all my friend on Facebook, Nextdoor, X and instagram of the poor quality plants and the games they play when you try to claim your guarantee. I just wish I could post pictures here of the dead trees so potential customers can see for themselves. read more

I ordered 5 different bare root plants in February for delivery in April and May. I April, I received an email that 2 were out of stock. I received a refund for 1. I called customer service and it was corrected. 2 weeks later I received another email that 2 of the other plants were out of stock. I did not receive a refund. Customer Service said that email was incorrect and that I would be getting those plants in May. In May, I received notice that one of the plants was actually out of stock, and that I would be receiving 2 plants mid-May. Later in May I then received a refund for 1 plant, and I received 1 plant that was clearly dead and was clearly NOT an Iris as expected. I will not order from Gurneys again. I have also tried to unsubscibe from their daily emails with no luck. read more

Don´t EVER buy anything from this company. If it´s not dead when it arrives, it will be soon after. The website pages don´t load, so there is NO customer service. I stopped buying plants from Gurney´s years ago, thought perhaps they had changed and found out the expensive way they hadn´t. Save your money, and buy from a reputable dealer! read more

Gurneys has gone downhill. For several years, it had been my go-to nursery. No more! So sad, my purchases this year were expensive crap.

I ordered sweet potatoes May 11th (spring) they said they send them out in spring... I hadn't recieved them weeks later. I asked for a refund and they said they'd give me a "replacement Certificate". I wanted a refund but they said their policy is not to give refunds and I quote "for an item that is not currently in stock but is scheduled to return in a future." Their website said they were available in the spirng... its still spring. Give me my 38.86 back read more

Only giving one star because I have to! I am so disgruntled with the dishonest email promotions of free shipping with discount codes that never work. Since this is an order I usually make once a year I just always end up paying the shipping costs that should be free and shrugging it off but today I tried to contact customer service after two hours between a buggy chat function and call my problem was not able to be resolved. I was given a variety of useless "free shipping discount codes" that never work and told I'd have to spend $15 more in order to get it to work. I will not be spending $.01 more with this company! read more

I emailed them twice to ask why I was charged for delivery on an order over $75, which was supposed to qualify for free shipping. I never received a response. read more

Avoid - unless you want practically dead plants. Ordered on-line. They ship with FedEx and the plants sat around for 2 weeks "in transit." No refunds but issued a store credit. Since I have absolutely no intention of ordered from them again, I just lost money. If I could give no stars, I would. read more

It's regrettable I have to give this place a one. I ordered three plants end of March and I still have not received two of them. Their customer service does not answer emails. You wait a long time on the phone before they finally answer and when they did, I never did find out where one order went, and the other order is evidently on backorder. It's unfortunate that I lost my magic wand and crystal ball in the 1980s or I would've known that because I certainly didn't receive any notification from gurney's. Additionally, I said I would like to cancel the order and she said I couldn't even though it was on backorder and they didn't know where my other order was. Here's what you need to do. Don't waste your time with gurneys if you have a billing issue, contact your bank and dispute the item with your bank and request them to do a charge back. Keep all of your documents. If you have any kind of decent bank, they will charge the amount back. I just requested a charge back earlier today and I've already received notification from my bank that they're on it. Which is a lot more than I can say for gurneys. read more

I ordered 2 different types of potato starts, not only did they arrived mostly dead. I followed the instructions to revive and then plant and every single one has died off. I was issued a credit they don't do refunds. Don't bother ordering from them the customer service is terrible and they won't refund you. Additionally, it took almost a month to get them. I should've read the reviews before selecting this company. read more

I ordered 6 miniatures roses. Planted them, 2 started to bloom the other 4 did not. I submiteed an email for refund. They do not refund but will give me 140.00 credit. SO when you buy something and it doesn't "work" you won't get your money back. Find another nursery. Also my name is Lily...they addressed me as DOnald. SO Parveen 4620 Customer Service, doesn't take th time to see my name is Lily. I will finish my 140 then I'm gone. I gave them a lot of business. No more. Home depot and other companies don't treat me like this read more

I ordered Strawberries last Spring and none of them lived. I should have learned my lesson. This year I ordered Sweet Potatoes starts and they arrived in terrible condition. I am sending them back. Meanwhile I ordered from a company named George's and the price was half of Gurney's and they arrived in excellent condition. read more

First off, they sent me an email stating my order was sent on 4/22/25 via USPS first class mail with no tracking information. The order finally arrived today, 5/3/2025. The cost of the seeds was $42.94 but they also charged me $10.99 for shipping and handling. When the order arrived today, the first class postage on the envelope was only $1.77.................They totally ripped me off on the shipping cost. Never again will I ever deal with this company again. read more

Buyer Beware!!! I ordered a Miss Kim Lilac bush. It arrived but when I photo ID'd it it turned out to be a Common Lilac. I called the company to tell them this so they said they'd send out a Miss Kim. I said please be careful and do not another Common. Fed Ex arrived yesterday and guess what? Yep, another common and this was is deemed "sick." I called again and he kept putting me on hold " let me talk to my team!" Then he wanted me to send him pictures?!?! Nope not going to deal with this company again. Obviously trying to pass off less desired plants/ bushes. I'll eat my $38 ! read more

I decided to give Gurney's a try and my experience was mediocre. I ordered onion sets that arrived on time and as expected. They have done well, so far. I also ordered garlic bulbs and received an incorrect variety. I called and spoke to a very nice man that told me the type of garlic that I ordered was already sold out. He offered me a refund. I didn't accept at the time but he told me if the variety I was sent failed in my area that I had until June 30 to request a refund. I also ordered some heirloom tomato varieties that have not done well with less than 20% germination rates. I might order onion sets and garlic from them again but I will be purchasing seeds from a vendor with better/proven germination rates. read more

I placed an order totaling over $100 with Gurney's and was shocked to find out they shipped it without any tracking information. Their excuse? It was a "lightweight" item, so it went out via USPS First Class Flat--which offers zero tracking or delivery confirmation. When I reached out through their live chat, the experience went from bad to worse. The representative gave conflicting explanations, dodged my concerns, and ultimately ended the conversation mid-chat while I was still responding. Unprofessional and flat-out rude. Shipping expensive items without tracking in 2025 is unacceptable. There was no option at checkout to upgrade shipping or add protection. When your entire business revolves around shipping seeds and plants, how is there no secure shipping method for higher-value orders? Bottom line: if you're ordering anything of value from Gurney's, prepare to roll the dice. I won't be back, and I'll be warning others to steer clear. read more

We have used this company off and on for years. I know things have changed. The world has changed. However, we ordered three plants that arrived dead. We reached out. They offered to let us pick some new plants or seeds for the same amount. So we picked out six seed packets, and upon those being delivered, we didn't get one of the packets at all and one of the other packets was not what we ordered, it was something completely different. We reached back out again and customer service reordered the two seed packets. We just got them and they're finally right. read more

The delivery came right on time. My roses came bare root and did so good. They had the best selection. I will post pictures of my roses. Prices were affordable, HALF PURPLE TIGER FLORIBUNDA ROSE are so beautiful, and so are the HALF FRAGRANT CLOUD HYBRID TEA ROSE. Would definitely order from them again. read more

Don't do it.....I bought some seeds and after they didn't arrive I called. It was a call center in India. No kidding. Wouldn't refund me only offered store credit. Said my zip code was invalid and they sent the product to someone else. I disputed the charge. It was the only way of getting my money back. They prey on little old timid ladies to make money obviously. Horrible way to do business. They should be ashamed. read more

Returned 1 item and wanted to replace it with another. I had tracking information that Gurneys had received it but absolutely NO communication from them. I could barely understand their so called English and will not be ordering again. read more

Placed an order for seeds. Once, ordered found out it would take 3+ weeks for delivery. Seeds arrived late. Package of seeds missing from shipment. Emailed customer service twice with no response. Called to have missing seeds send out right away. It will take another 3+ weeks for these to arrive. Received an order confirmation. THEY ENTERED THE WRONG SEEDS TO SHIP. CALLED TO CORRECT THIS AGAIN! HOPEFULLY, I GET THE RIGHT SEEDS WITHIN 3 WEEKS! WILL NEVER USE GURNEY'S AGAIN! read more

Ordered 6 rose bushes last year, with free shpg. (total over $75.) All marked the 1 type of rose. When bloomed, one rose was different. Never notified of any substitution. Contacted Guerneys. They sent a replacement cert. for discounted rate. Ordered replacement rose now. Did not get same discounted rate and have to pay for shpg. since order under $75. So owed a balance for Guerneys mistake with original order. This is NOT right! read more

I'd give zero stars if I could. Garlic bulbs were not packaged properly and broke apart into individual cloves during shipping. Once the bulbs break apart they need to be planted immediately and it is not planting time for another week or two. So the bulbs I bought are useless for planting and a waste of money. I contacted their "customer service" with pictures showing the problem with their garlic and no one has contacted me back. They say they guarantee satisfaction but they don't stand up to that promise. Also, they will send you several emails a day about new promotions and I had to unsubscribe as it was obsessive. Maybe if they did a better job people would be return buyers without the excessive spam emails. Not a fan and I would never purchase anything from them again! read more

I ordered onion seed, as Gurney's were the first seed catalog i came across who sold this variety. A month went by with no notice of shipping. Emailed Gurney's and received a prompt reply that another package of seed would be sent out. Ten days later the seed arrived and were planted indoors in trays. Zero germination-not one seed germinated. They were sowed in the same mix and in the same way as three other varieties, from a different seed company, all of which were near 100% germination. Meanwhile, I received the first order, damaged and taped shut. I replanted these seeds and am curious as to whether they will germinate or not. As it stands I am a 6 weeks late in sowing this variety, so I don't know if they will make. Gurney's used to be my parents go to seed catalog, but times have changed and I won't be ordering from them again. Too bad. read more

I ordered 1 pack of strawberry bare-root, which is supposed to be 25, but I only received 12 crowns. The roots look great, but we'll have to see if they grow or not. The shipping is horrible. I would suggest purchasing elsewhere. read more

DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS COMPANY! I've placed (3) orders for both seeds and live plants for my garden. Two out of the three plants arrived DEAD and their customer service 'offering' of compensation didn't even cover my shipping costs. THE WORST customer service is terrible... it's taken me several attempts to get a reasonable 'credit" of ($10.00) AND THEN after trying to place another order the 'gift certificate' expired within 34 minutes of receiving in my email. TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE! I spent well over $100 with their company. NEVER AGAIN! read more

ordered in January. Mid April now and still waiting for most of plants to arrive. Wait and wait and wait and go to their website every couple of days. The promised date of delivery keeps changing, but the products are never sent. Getting too warm to be planting trees now. They delivered a dead, dry stick for a tree. Some of their stuff has grown though, so it isn't all that bad. Won't be buying again from them. read more

I live in growing zone 6b. Gurney would only send we plants in growing zone 6. This would put me 3 weeks from the planting date in 6b. They absolutely refused to send them earlier. They easily canceled my order. I was amazed a big company like this did not understand growing zones and would rather lose a customer than understand growing zones. I might also add that my pea seeds have not arrived and in this 6b area peas are planted in March. Totally amazed by this company!! Would have rated tham a 5 if I could get my plants when I wanted them. read more

Do I have to give them a star, well yes if I want to leave a review. DO NOT, DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY, their business practices and ethics are questionable at the very best. Ordered Deer Resistant Seed Mix X4 and Hummingbird & Butterfly Annual Garden Seed X3 for total of $41.79 on March 18, 2025. Standard Shipping, Gurney's will determine ship date by plant zone. Seems fair enough, but now April 22nd I still have not received my order, is past time to plant these seeds and Gurney's Off Shore Customer Service is absolutely an abomination! On 04/10/25 I called and was told order shipped 4/1/25 must wait 10-15 days before they will do anything on order. Phoned again on 4/18/25 and requested refund, was told NO NO you must wait another 24 hrs, it's 15 business days; NO REFUNDS only store credit or reship or order. Called today, 04/22/25 and again requested refund, why would I want store credit with someone I no longer want to do business with? Why would I want items reshipped when it is already too late? I just want my money back. Interesting concept I paid, you didn't deliver, you have not fulfilled your obligation to me. Customer Service continually regurgitated the shipping date of 4/1/25 by 1st class USPS, they can't track 1st class USPS. When pressing for refund I then told that the order shipped on 4/6/25 by FedEx. Changing the story within 4 minutes and trying to push out responsibility for failure to deliver. When I expressed my sorrow that the Customer Service Agent must deal with these type of phone calls all day long and is relegated to read from a script and continually repeat information that has already been established, that it must be very wearing and disheartening to represent such a dishonest company. She apologized again, asked me to hold, and disconnected the call without resolution. read more

I am placing a review here because Gurney's removed it from their website. Last year I ordered 2 apple trees, 1 arrived dead so they replaced it with a coupon. In Nov '21 , in order to get free shipping, I ordered 2 peach trees using the coupon to pay for 1 expecting spring delivery. On 5/18/22 I received both trees, 1 was broke just above the root graft. It had been broken prior to shipment because it was taped above & below the damage to a stick. When I called about the peach tree the customer service agent said she would give me a refund for the tree in a Gurney's certificate. I explained that this was a replacement tree & asked if she could just replace the tree instead of another coupon (so I would not need to buy anything else in order to get free shipping) & she stated that ALL peach trees were out of stock (in May). I asked if she could send an apple & they were out of stock...ALL fruit trees were out of stock. She asked me if there was anything else she could send & I had her send a clematis. I posted a review. In June I received a replacement certificate in the mail so I curiously checked my online account only to notice Gurney's has removed my review & pictures. This was a very reputable company when it was located in Yankton, SD. Now, not so much. I had given them the benefit of the doubt; 2 honeysuckle vines & 5 hydrangeas I ordered last fall have died as well. I will never order from this company again. read more

RUN from this company!! They constantly cancel order after waiting for months! Scam artists for sure, read all the reviews and ratings!!

Your online ordering is awful. I spent an hour, last night and this morning trying to order from you with no success. We are getting a bumper crop of fruit, but NOT FROM GURNEYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everything they sent us was dead or dying. When we couldn't order EXACTLY what needed replaced, they charged us prohibitive shipping which ate up what we were "refunded" We gave up and went to a local nursery and now have wonderful plants that are giving us great fruit at half the cost. The only thing worse than their prices and quality is their customer service. Save your money and shop local - they know what will grow and we have great prices, quality, and even customer service. read more

This company is terrible. Will never order from them again. Place an online order, obviously have to pay in full to place the order. Plants arrive TINY, WEEKS if not months LATE, AND some of them never awoke from dormancy (dead). I then started getting additional bills in the mail from them. Emailed them, took several emails before they would respond. Their response was that it was an error and to discard the bill. Then got another bill, with late fees. What's more, THEY DONT HONOR THEIR GUARANTEE!!! They have a 1 year alive guarantee. They refuse to respond to that. I put in a single email about the billing and the guarantee request and they only responded about billing, ignoring the guarantee request. So, they're double billing me, and failing to honor their guarantee request. This company is a horrible mess. I hope it goes under. Never ordering from here ever again. read more
