Not sure why this guy has 5 different entries in Yelp. Perhaps they are auto-populated. I went to Chris Gunter's office after getting a DWI in Austin. Yes, it sucked, and yes, I am an idiot. Let me first say that I wish this never happened in the first place. Concerned as I was about this incident, I visited about 12 different law firms to see if I could find the best representation to make sure I got the best possible outcome for my case. Prices were all over the map, with Mr. Gunter toward the top of the price range. Mr. Gunter promised to be aggressive in court, and gave me the impression that he'd really take good care of me, so I thought it was worth spending a little more than I would have with other attorneys (I paid him about $3500). He gave an amazing presentation to me in his early meetings before I confirmed that I would hire him, and I was impressed by his time on the DA. Unfortunately, once I hired him I got a completely different experience. Everything about our relationship made me wish I hired someone else. First, he did a terrible job representing me in court. He wouldn't even go with me to court. He'd usually send either another attorney or a junior attorney to go with me. Not what I paid for. In the end, I would have had the EXACT SAME OUTCOME IF I HAD REPRESENTED MYSELF. I really wish I just saved that $3500! None of the things he promised beforehand did he actually follow through on. That was the worst part. But, this way of handling his clients carried through to everything. Whenever we'd have an appointment, he'd be about 45 minutes late (on average), and would make me wait in his waiting room. This is tough to manage while trying to hold down a career! His reception staff was super rude any time you'd call or show up for an appointment...not sure why they are so angry! Maybe he treats them like his clients. At the time that we worked together, they did not use email (at least for clients), which is a very convenient way to communicate or to send non-confidential documents. Now I understand that a DWI is probably small potatoes for a criminal defense attorney. However, if he was not interested in helping me he should have been clearer about that at the outset. If I had it all to do over again, I would have never set foot in his office. There are a lot of good DWI lawyers in Austin, and I'd highly recommend that others look at some of them before Mr. Gunter and his associates. read more

I found out the hard way how easy it is to get a DWI in Austin. Two relatives of mine had used Alan Bennett and were pleased with him so I considered having him represent me as well. I did visit a few other attorneys to shop around and they seemed more interested in getting me to sign a contract than learning more about my situation. Not so with Alan. He answered all my questions and after sleeping on it for a night I went through with it. He fought to get an occupational license since I refused the breathalyzer and I always felt like I knew exactly what stage my case was at. Alan always called back the same day or occasionally the following day when I had questions (which I had a lot) while waiting on my case. It turned out I was under 0.08 (barely) and Alan got my case reduced to a traffic ticket which was eventually dismissed as well. I will be using Alan again in 2 years when I'm eligible for an expunction of the arrest. In summary if I were to ever be in the unfortunate need of legal representation again I wouldn't hesitate at all to hire Alan again. read more

Adding my endorsement for Mr Bennet who helped this dad with my daughter's arrest for DUI. As most know, DUI arrests in Austin are for real, happen often and they expose you to a very scary part of our legal system...one with not much aptitude for compassion or common sense at the arresting officer level. Simple lane change violation followed by voluntary admission of one drink followed by breathalyzer refusal will get you booked and in jail as fast as a drunken high speed chase with injuries. My daughter (the former case above) was traumatized and sitting in jail when we contacted Mr Bennet. He went above and beyond to provide thoughtful and compassionate advice, kept us informed about options and when required, leveraged his reputation and relationships to finally win a complete dismissal of charges. This was a months long process and an expensive lesson for us but in terms of value for money spent, Mr Bennet's fee pales when compared to restored reputation, security clearances, driving privileges and insurance rates.
