Arrived here late 4am MT, nice they have the night reservation box for any interested visitors wanting to camp. One of the best KOA ive been to yet with clean and good looking bathroom/restrooms- warm water got a problem, wide camping grounds with very minimal bugs(unless the cold temps of 40s scared them). Too bad they ran out of souvenirs with KOA Gunnison- but they said theyll be closing for season by end of sept, so yeah. The staff was very friendly stopping their work to greet you hello or bye as we were leaving!

Our pop-up at an electrical with water hook-up site at the Gunnison KOA.

First, we enjoyed our stay. The KOA recommended this place for our needs. If we could give 4-1/2…read morestars, we would. I'll detail the pros and semi-cons (there aren't any big cons). Pros: 1. The staff is very friendly and helpful. 2. We'd been concerned with the name of the place that it might be filled with political signs (there is a park in Creede that is filled with hateful signage and it was scary, frankly) But there was no evidence of anything political, and everyone we met was nice. 3. We only needed water and electric hookups. They have a few spots like this, which were cheaper and the woman I made the reservation with advised me to wait to come by a few days to save money. The spot was pretty darned flat and, though close to others, worked just fine 4. The spots are shady. Lots of trees. 5. We don't have a dog, but the place is dog-friendly, and people pick up after their dogs well. 6. The women's bathroom was pretty darned clean. One evening there was hair on the shower drain, but they clean in the morning, so no issue. Semi-Cons: 1. The men's bathroom apparently wasn't as well maintained as the women's while we were there. They have 3 shower stalls for the men and just 2 for the women. Two of the men's shower stalls had broken hooks, and one was completely missing a shower head. My husband made due, and I reported the issue to the desk, so hopefully this gets addressed with whoever maintains the men's side. 2. It was extremely muddy when we were there, so we had to watch where we stepped and drove. It would be good if they would replenish the gravel in those areas during conditions like this with monsoon rains. 3. We had two nights with a couple near us running their A/C all night which was annoying. Especially since it was cold outside, like around 40 degrees! They could just open a window? But there's no rule against this. Maybe the noise rule could be expanded on colder nights to cover A/C when not needed? 4. We think blackbirds or woodpeckers ran over our roof every morning and evening for periods, waking us up. No one seemed to know what this was about, and I don't expect them to do anything about it, it was just scary when it first happened and we didn't know what it was. Weird. That's never happened to us before. So, if you hear tiny running sounds while you camp, it might be these ornery birds! :-) 5. The wifi was spotty. I was able to get on a Zoom, but it was a little wonky and on our phones, it was out as much as it was on. Most RV places have this issue, but the other reviews led us to believe theirs was better. Also, not theirs to fix, but AT&T sucks in this area. Better if you have Verizon or T-Mobile from what the office told me. 6. They have a cowboy statue outside the office and they place a radio thingy on it that plays country music all day when the office is open. I used to work in country radio so it doesn't really bother me, but it might bother others, so recommend maybe not playing the radio and let the campers choose what they want to listen to? So, you see, not much in the way of cons. We would go back if they'll have us. Their intent is good.

I didn't know too much about the park and was a bit disappointed that we had to nix the plans to do our large hike in the North Rim of the park. That being said, BCGNP far surpassed all expectations on just our very first overlook - Tomichi Point - within minutes of driving into the South Rim. I was not prepared for the sheer beauty of the canyons. The South Rim is so very different from the North Rim, so if you only have time to go to one, make sure to do your research. The South Rim is much more developed, more popular, has plenty of tiny hikes and overlooks, and brings the easy, classic beauty. The South Rim drive is an easy 7 miles and features 12 overlooks with the longest hike to the overlook being about 0.5 of a mile. And most of the hikes are more like walks. Stunning views, perfect for sunset. You'll also find the BCGNP visitor center on the South Rim drive. The North Rim is much more underdeveloped and less visited. We visited in the late afternoon and only ran into one other group of people while driving their scenic North Rim drive. I believe it's about 4.5 miles, and it is unpaved - that being said, we drove it in a Toyota Corolla without any issues. These overlooks are equally gorgeous but give you a different perspective of the canyon. You'll find a lot of the bigger hikes in the North Rim. While we weren't able to fit one into our schedule, we did do part of the North Vista Trail to see Exclamation Point - wonderful hike, wish we had been able to do the full trail. Overall, I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I visited Black Canyon of the Gunnison, but it definitely wasn't how breathtakingly beautiful this park is. 100% worth a stop, and if all you do is stop at their overlooks, you will still get to experience so much beauty.

The staff was super friendly and accommodating of our need to extend our checkout until later in the day so we could finish out the work day. The park grounds are well kept; the on site Wi-Fi worked well when we used it (we had Internet in our RV via AT&T and Verizon) and we're able to work from the RV during the week with no problems; the little laundry facility was clean and even had a nice table to fold on and a rolling basket to move loads with. Most of the washer and dryer units were working and did a fine job at cleaning our clothes. I was also pleased at the $1.25 a load for washing and $0.25 per 15 minutes for drying. We didn't use the bath house so unfortunately I can't opine on that. The only con is that you parked awfully close to your neighbors and I felt bad because our sewer hose ran next to our neighbors eating area/pic-nick table. Also, because of the closeness of RVs/Trailers, it was a little more of a challenge than usual to park our RV. To be fair, it is an almost 38' long Class A Motorhome (so a bit like driving a bus). That said, most of the folks camping in the park were older, clean and quiet which we really appreciated. There was an occasional barking dog but everyone seemed really good at taking care of their pets and not letting them bark endlessly for long periods of time. Similarly, you are close to the road, and do get a little bit of traffic noise but it didn't bother us at all during the day and there isn't much traffic at night. We would definitely stay here again.

We were right next to the river and it was a really lovely view. Prices were fair. And the camp hosts were welcoming and friendly. It was a beautiful little area just outside of lake city We would definitely stay again if we were back in the area. The water went out one night and we were not able to take a shower that night. The camp host seemed surprised that we didn't have ability to shower in a RV. We were renting a cabin...... We had been climbing 14ers the last few days and just wanted a shower but alas it was not meant to be. Wish they would have put a sign on the door to explain what was going on instead of just locking the bathroom from the inside. We thought someone had just locked themselves in because of the curtain on the shower i went to ask about it and then was told that the water was out. Just put up a little communication about it to inform your guests :) Otherwise wonderful stay.

The bathrooms are the cleanest I have seen at a campground in a long time. There are trees throughout, and we could hear the river at night even though we weren't next to it. The spots are not super close together so you can enjoy a meal outside without the constant smell of someone emptying black tanks! I would definitely stay here again.
