I visited a number of memory care facilities. I am so happy that I chose American House. The switch over to American House is like the change between night and day. Rory the Community Relations Director answered all my questions when I first visited American House and then helped facilitate her move. Tisha the Director of Wellness made sure that my mom's medical needs were in place upon her arrival. Her co-worker Jeff in the memory care unit promptly answers my questions about mom's medications and care. The facility is clean and the staff that works with her on a daily basis are extremely caring. My mom enjoys the meals that are served and her appetite has increased since she entered American House. Bethany the Activities Director for memory care provides stimulating daily activities and also arranges for outside entertainment to be brought into the facility for the patient's enjoyment. Shelby the Executive Director expertly coordinates the staff to ensure an organized and smoothly-run facility. Mom is receiving excellent care from all the staff. If you are considering a move for your loved one I highly recommend American House.

I would never recommend American House to anyone. Initially, my mother was in independent living…read moreand was very happy. However, after significant staff turnover, the quality of care and overall environment steadily declined. Residents became increasingly unhappy, and things only worsened over time. Following a fall, my mother had to be transferred to assisted living at American House. She is currently under VITAS hospice care, and I cannot say enough good things about the VITAS hospice team. They have been compassionate, attentive, and tremendous throughout this process. My mother is now transitioning at the end of her life, and what occurred at American House is beyond unacceptable. Hospice staff arrived at approximately 10:00 a.m. today and found my mother, who is on continuous oxygen and morphine, still sitting in a recliner wearing the same clothes from the previous day. She, her clothes, and her blanket were soaked in urine. The hospice nurse immediately commented that the room reeked of urine. She was left in the recliner overnight! What makes this even more disturbing is that I had called the night before at 8:10 pm and specifically asked if my mother had been put to bed. I was told that she had not and was assured that "the next shift would do it." Apparently, no one did. This is not simply poor care. In my opinion, this reflects severe neglect of a vulnerable elderly person at one of the most critical stages of life. No family should ever have to discover their loved one in these conditions. I would never, under any circumstances, entrust the care of someone I love to this facility. I am heartbroken and sickened that I was unaware of what was happening until it was too late.

He is in Skilled…read moreNursing and I they definitely DO NOT have enough help to meet the needs of the few patients they have, especially on weekends. I do my husband's laundry because of allergies to liquid soap and have posted three signs up in his room to this effect. Unfortunately some of his clothes turn up missing, plus I find things in his drawer which are NOT his. I also purchased Pads to be used on his wheelchair with his room number on them, they disappear on a regular basis and the search must go on. Today when I arrived my husband was half shaved, teeth not brushed and sometimes I find him wet. On Sunday we had him out for 2 1/2 hours. Upon returning he wanted to take a nap. We rang for a CNA, after twenty minutes one came into the room and we were told they were ALL eating lunch and we would have to wait. After another half hour, I had a friend help me assist him with a dry diaper and put him in bed. As I was leaving two CNA's were walking out of the room next door with a scale. I guess it is more important to weigh someone then to make sure that the clients are clean and dry. All these issues might seem minor, but when we are talking about the man I love, his care is NOT minor.

What we didn't know was equally important. We had moved into an amazing community--our fellow residents are interesting, friendly and supportive; the staff could not be more dedicated to making our living experience exceptional. They even stayed on-site during Hurricane Ian to be sure we were safe. And we have so much more time for life--no more cooking unless we want to, no more stripping and making beds, no more dusting and mopping! And there are so many activities, from exercise classes to entertaining lectures to outings to local points of interest. Finally, if we would like to go out on our own, all it takes is a phone call for the valet to bring our car from our private garage. Florida living at its best!
