There are places that value their customers and then there's Guitar Center. I'm never spending another dime here.

I would say I have bought 90% of my gear from guitar center. I've used multiple stores. Each time they're respectful they are honest and they're helpful. I've never felt like I've been taken advantage of, and they've always helped me out when I've needed it. I want to just say a big thank you to guitar center for all the years of great service. It means a lot. I recently purchased an amp and had an issue with it and Dylan the store manager without question took care of the issue. I can't state enough how professional the guys at the store were. They made a rough situation easy, which goes a long way in my book. Thank you. read more

I was really pleased as well as impressed with my recent visit to Guitar Center. My little girl has recently expressed interest in playing the guitar. I took her there to check out a few different models and see what she liked. I'm impressed by the number of guitars they have as well as the price range. Although they were swamped , I asked a male employee ( don't know his name but he had hair like Farrah Fawcett) a question about an entry-level guitar. He informed me that he was currently helping another customer, but would be with me as soon as he was finished. I truly respect a man that does what he says he's going to do! As soon as he was finished with the other gentleman, knowing I was going to ask him about an entry-level guitar, he took the time to answer my question and made sure I fully understood the different qualities of entry level guitars that they offered there. Although I could see he had 10 things pressing, he didn't rush my inquiry or his explanation. They also do drums, DJ and PA equipment. They have a dedicated gaming center and even an acoustically sealed room for you to go in and play. Top notch store. Extensive selection and very well stocked. read more

I went to purchase a high-priced guitar amp. The price tag said that the store would match any legit price online. I found a cheaper price at Musician's Friend and also on the Guitar Center website. The store refused to match the price. This interaction was false advertising and poor service. The store lost my sale and possibly my business going forward. read more

The majority of reviews on this site are not indicative of my experience. My whole family went in there on 12/20/2023 and had a BLAST!! Their platinum rooms make them standout. Yes they were busy, but I waited my turn to have the young lady pull down a few guitars for me. I also patiently waited for her to hang them back up. They appeared to be fully stocked on everything and had far more used inventory than my GC in New Braunfels, Texas. They were doing the best they could being as busy as they were. Only place in New Orleans to get strings besides pawn shops and mom n pop stores here and there but mostly blacks and they dont prodominitely play guitars most of the time so it fucks us. Guitar center is closer to metairie. Nothing in the city. Alot of people may be disappointed to know theres really not a big demand for live music in new orleans the way it used to be anymore and it shows with the lack of retail for instruments besides brass horns and they sound like shit in any type of music. Just being honest in my opinion. Guitar Center is all we have so ill give it 5 stars or id be playing with Draco strings from the French Market or low end DiAddarios from the Pawn Shop. I'm going to mimic what others have suggested here- DO NOT use Same-Day pickup. This location has absolutely no clue what's in-stock, fortunately I opted to visit the location in person before purchasing an item listed as in-stock. Compared to a GC location in Texas which I promptly ordered everything I needed from, I would think that these were 2 different companies. Locations like these give GC a bad rep. I was able to practice for almost an hour unbothered in the keyboard keyboard section during a lunch break. It was glorious. I'm so grateful for that time. That being said I was never approached about purchasing anything or asked if I needed help. So you must be willing to reach out to a staff member if you genuinely need assistance. I've come & gone at this place, its begun to be very familiar... Although recently, they've initiated a major renovation & it appears to be quite refreshing. The staff, although plentiful, all seem to be quite busy with other things people etc. Sooooo I suggest that you have a good idea of what you're looking for upon your arrival. But that's not to say they won't help you; it's just that it appears to more customers than staff. This place has the feel of a 'hangout' of sorts. I mean you can place on the equipment, have a jam session, guitar lesson tutoring, there's a drum room... I mean you can literally spend hours on end here. Ship-to-store is kind of a joke (even for "in stock" items like strings). It would have been quicker to get a leisurely lunch then drive across town and go inside with a screaming toddler in tow to buy in person. If you're lucky, they'll fill the order before they close for the day. If not I might as well have ordered cheaper from the manufacturer for home delivery. C&M isn't that far out of the way, I should have went there instead and supported a local shop. read more

Went to ask if they repair amplifiers, as stated on their website. They said no, but they know a guy who does and would give me his number. 10 minutes before I found someone to ask the question, over 15 minutes more to get the phone number. To make things worse, when I called this guy, he told me he wasn't an expert in fixing solid state amps, be he could open it up and wiggle the wires to see if that would fix the problem. This was a quick in and out trip.....I needed to pick up some mallets for the new xylophone I purchased(a life long dream of mine). I didn't seek out any assistance as I wanted to peruse around the store in a speedy sort of matter. I found two pair, each reasonably priced. I hadn't set foot in a Guitar center in 20 years.....I was equally starry eyed as I would be in an art supply store. Mostly because I'm such a music lover. People wondered around gazing and dreaming, sampling instruments and chatting with fellow musicians. I was in wondered as I found the used instrument section, I contemplated hard on buying a trombone....don't ask. It's a cool section though. I highly recommend checking it out. Checkout with a tall tatted man, who's smile was super infectious.....he was excited about going to see Roger Waters in concert that night..... I mean.....come on.....who wouldn't be! read more

Great used gear. This is a place we go when we aren't looking for anything specific because whatever we need is never in stock... Even my favorite sticky sticks inventory is running low and I hafta come to terms with the fact that once that stock is gone, it may be gone forever. The sale items in the drum section are always awesome and really well priced. My husband can usually find some of the odds and ends he needs for his guitars and amps but doesn't rely on finding anything here. Once he ordered 4 tubes... What a huge waste of time. The products never arrived, were apparently never in stock online and getting replacement tubes ordered was impossible. He eventually was able to get a cash refund after some hoop jumping. I can say that the staff are always super helpful, patient and friendly. Zero attitude other than a desire to help you find your goodies! I do plan on taking lessons here. There is no PRETENSE whatsoever! Everyone seems to be really kind and supportive. We will continue to frequent this establishment because it's fun, we have our own sections to bug out in and it's a productive way to spend a Saturday or Sunday. New Orleans has a small community of players... and everyone I know orders from sweetwater as a direct result of the Customerservice at this guitar center. the rock stars that work here can't be bothered. It's actually funny how bad it is. im sitting in the parking lot, right now. I just basically had to beg to give them my money for something I needed for tonight's gig. sales person with long bushy curley black hair was behind the counter. I walk up with the items I need... he ignored me and everyone else. I say "can I check out?" He makes no eye contact and walks away, picks up a dimebag Darrell dean and starts playing loudly. But as he walked by another employee he says "ya boy wants to check out". maybe hes not a salesman? Maybe some other position (he had on a GC name tag and shirt).. but come on. At least acknowledge the people trying to pay for stuff. At the time no one else was at the counter. seriously, this location is losing out on tons of revenue because of this. Not an isolated instance. This type of service is the norm here. these guys cannot be working on commission. Stunningly bad business model and likely a reflection of bad leadership. read more

As I write this review standing in Guitar Center, now on the 45th minute of waiting, there is still only one person working rentals during Mardi Gras time? Not a good call, particularly when there are several other employees standing around not doing much or anything at all (or in the case of some just playing on the guitars and instruments). One guy is doing the work of several, but naturally it's moving slowly. Figure this out... Prices are quite reasonable, but you pay for it in the time it takes to get what you need. That would be almost an hour and a half for me, despite reserving a month in advance. One would think this shouldn't be an issue now. read more

Sad day.... Four or five employees are standing around doing nothing while one person is helping at the rental desk. We have been waiting for over 30 minutes now, and I anticipate it will be another 20 minutes before we get our rental and get on our way. This one guy is busting his butt... Kudos to him, but shame on the rest of the employees. Who knew that service was important in a service-based business? Clearly not these folks. Go elsewhere. And... Now we have someone watching folks milling around and waiting for help, but the fool is playing a guitar and ignoring us all. For the love of it all, do your job. Seriously, go ANYWHERE BUT HERE. Well this place was far far from where i live but I'm sooo glad i came here for my guitar strings! I could order online but what's the fun in that ? Always good to go to talk to an expert. Anyways... back to choosing guitar strings... i'm a novice when it comes to guitars... but everyone was soo helpful! I was pointed to the main guy in the guitar section...I asked about strings and tools needed to change my strings. The sales associate asked if i knew how to change guitar strings...surprise! I don't!!! But i planned to use Youtube for my first guitar string change! To my surprise, you can pay $20 to have your strings changed by a professional which includes the cost of the strings. Josh, i think thats his name...he is situated at the guitar string change station. Anyways...he was super helpful!!! he used this drill bit to change my strings...i would have done it manually! He cleaned up my guitar...added some lemon oil to shine up my guitar! He even fixe the neck of the guitar so its more even! No wonder my fingers were having trouble making clear crisp sounds! Glad I came here all the way from Madisonville to give my guitar to love and care!!! read more

Went here in search of sheet music for the piano, on recommendations of local friends. I didn't even think about Guitar Center, because I didn't know we had one. I was in luck! Walking in, you encounter a friendly guy at a podium who will check your receipt when you leave. There is a section for pianos/keyboards, guitars (obviously), band instruments, and accessories. There is a huge section of speakers and a plethora of various types of guitars and strings. There is a small (small) section of piano books. Mostly big notes/easy piano, but there were also some regular books with regular arrangements. I found two - Super Mario Bros music (hell yes!) and a big book of classical music. Total purchase: $45.00. I haven't bought books in years, so was a little shocked at the striker price, but I was able to get my books and peruse the rest of the store. One of my dreams is to learn cello. While they did not have any cellos in the store at the time, they did have some refurbished and very reasonably-priced violins for sale. They had a whole lot of cello and other cases, as well as tuning/strings/other accessories one may need for string instruments. There is a room dedicated to guitars (the regular kind, not electric), and it is actually very pretty; they also have a room where you can practice the instruments! I moseyed into the room and got to hear a coupe guys jamming on their guitars. Hopefully they will get more sheet music, but when I asked at checkout, they said they don't get new music in very often. So, I may have to begin searching elsewhere. However, for my first visit, this place hit the spot! Staff was extremely friendly and helpful, and answered all of my random questions. I love music stores, and I love the feeling of being around all the different instruments and their capabilities to make beautiful music. read more

I really dislike this place. Had to go in there for work to buy some last-minute equipment. I was stopped at the door and was asked if I would like to give them my name. "Um...no. I'm using it". But sadly, I had to give them my name in order to get into the store at all. Security, you know. Must be safe and must protect the company from thieves and scammers... So sure. "I'm Stephen Webster...that's with a PH and not a V...Yes, that's good.... (I'm not actually Stephen Webster, just FYI. Sorry guy.). Can I go in and do my business now?" I was informed I had to leave the equipment I brought with me for size testing at the front desk. I think they were afraid I was going to stick a guitar into the roughly 6x8 box. So I asked if I could take the specific PART with me. Manager called..yes you can. Well Hallelujah Hoss. Walking into this place is like walking into a really bad Techno Wannabe club/snooty, hipster restaurant. Thump-thump music blaring and employees walking around and past you pretending you don't exist but somehow they smell something bad. *sniff-sniff* Nope. I still smell like Irish Spring. Anyway, I got my part, went to the counter and waited 15 minutes for 1 customer ahead of me to finally be finished getting his refund. Seems managers are scarce and people don't know how to do much without them. I actually paid for the part using my female boss' credit card and being all security minded, they never even noticed or checked. I signed the machine "George Bush". We'll see what happens there. I walked out right past the plebe who took my name and my box. He was flirting with a guy who just came in and I took my box back and walked out without him ever noticing. Horrible customer service. Hardly all gone in store and no one cared to help. Very rude sales persons behind the counter who only wanted to argue rather than show me equipment. Very unknowledgeable staff at even told me I'd be better off shopping at Walmart. I was looking to spend around $2000 on some pioneer equipment and high-end speakers. Absolutely no help and downright rude. I'll never shop here again or recommend it to other musicians in musical artists that I know. Your loss! read more

No star-I am a local DJ who has over the years spent more money than I care to admit. On most visits, I have had to ask for assistance, and more often than not, the clerks do not have skills to answer my questions. I have gone in many times, stayed in the store for extended periods of time, wanting to make major purchases, but have left because no one ever takes the time to ask if I need help. Again today I was in there store for almost an hour, no one asked if I needed help, so I left. The revenue they lose because of their ego's and incompetance must be incredible. First, let me say I have a natural aversion to Guitar Center, as it's always, no matter what location, an unpleasant experience. There's always some guy---an employee!--- playing Norwegian grind core through a PA system. Another guy saying, "Turn it down, Brad." Another guy, a customer, noodling the same intro to "One" by Metallica over and over again. Another customer pounding a beatbox, the same "dom-dah-ch-ch-ch-cha" ad infinitum. This location is a good deal suckier than others. A lot of the merchandise, particularly the used, is dirty and dusty. The store's also organized oddly, empty is some places, cluttered in others. One good thing: they have a pretty solid selection of used guitars and synths, as probably should be expected around New Orleans. But my God, the employees. One or two are helpful, but the rest are raging c88k-smokers. The egos of the guys who usually work in places like this: bafflingly gargantuan. All of them are in Voivod cover bands and think they're the next ones to "make it big". If making it big is wearing Hot Topic goth clothing and looking like you have five pounds of pubic hair gorilla-glued to your face, then they're major league. I know this might sound mean, but here's my verbatim exchange, yesterday, with pubic-hair-face guy: Him: Would you like insurance with that? Me: No thanks. Him (looking at me like I just crapped the floor): No insurance? Me: No thank you. Him: I highly recommend it. Me: I appreciate it. But it's a few hundred dollar keyboard. Not worth it. It'll last a year anyway. Him: You should get insurance. I'm warning you. Me: (silence). Him: Things happen. Me: I don't want insurance. Him: (acting like I just urinated on his holiday fruitcake) Okay, but things happen. Me: No, and that's final. Him: (rolling eyes) Give me your address. Me: (address given) Him: Again. Slower. Me: (again, the address) Him: 2. 3. (long silence, glaring at keyboard). 2. 3...? WHAT? Go. Me: You know what, man? Your attitude sucks. Etc. Mind you, I *never* say this to customer service people. I empathize deeply with them. I don't expect, nor do I want, someone pathologically cheerful. In fact, I don't even care if they say hello. But some of these guys, they go out of their way to treat you like they'd throw a block party if you got into a car wreck. Avoid if possible. read more

I am a professional musician and was shopping for a small guitar for my young daughter. There was a great selection and I found the perfect one! Looked great and sounded amazing! Best of all it was on sale! It even came with a matching bag! When the salesman rang it up though it was nearly TWICE the price on the price tag. The salesman was completely baffled. The manager, BK, also had nothing to say. The experience reminded me of why I don't like these big name stores. As a person who has recently picked up the guitar again (after a 20+ year absence), I must admit I really like Guitar Center. Here are a few reasons why: 1. Knowledgeable and helpful staff. Yes, you may have to "wait your turn" before you get assistance but that's because the place is busy. 2. Competitive prices. Basically, the same prices as found on-line. 3. Great selection! 4. The "Acoustic Room". Yes, you can actually play and hear what that beautiful and expensive Martin sounds like! 5. The place is just plain fun. Yes, the main showroom can be a bit loud and chaotic, but it's a music store so get over it. The only complaint I really have is that the salespeople really push the extended warranties/insurance. Sure, it's their job but please respect me when I choose not to purchase it. Bottom line: despite a couple of flaws it's a great music store. read more

What's the first thing that jumps into your mind when you see Smoky B? Of course you're thinking - "sweet lord, those hands were made to hold a glockenspiel hammer." Well, I'm here to tell you little critters that Smoky B here is a damn fine glockenspielist. I tell ya, when I hold those little hammers in my tiny hands, it's like the first time I lit up a bowl of bath salts - destiny. Keep this in mind as I sweep into Guitar Center. Imagine my shock, my indignant anger, that an establishment of this scale would eschew such a totemic instrument. I was so flustrated, my bowels promptly released. Luckily, I was wearing two leotards, with multiple towels and old shoes wedged between the taint/anal regions to prevent leakage (AKA "junk shot"). There I stood, layers upon layers of cloth and shoe leather filling with excrement, screaming my favorite Nickelback song at the top of my lungs (LOOK AT THIS PHOTOGRAPH), when I was calmly escorted to a soundproof booth filled with guitars. One of the kindly sales associates - also a dedicated Nickelback fan, albeit ignorant to the dulcet, subtle complexities of the glockenspiel - guided me through a lovely duet of Olivia Newton John's "Let's get Physical." Guitar Center gets five stars for a conscientious sales staff with a great taste in music. Also, they were very handy with a mop bucket once the junk shot failed my b-hole. read more

I can't stand stores that hound you for your receipt when exiting the door. I went here for a lesson and the worker at the exit is is yelling "yo my man!", "yo my man!", I didn't even realize he was talking to me, but he's outside the building asking where my receipt was at this point. I just had to shake my head and continue on. People aren't required to show anything when trying to exit the building, and getting some worker who can't even address a customer properly is even more annoying. I'll definitely be doing my guitar lessons somewhere else. read more

You could be next in line and they will literally talk over you to speak to the male that is behind you. This is by far the worst guitar center I've been to. good selection and the area certainly needs a Guitar Center. Prices are fair and the staff is hit or miss (some really want to help you, others not so much). If you have your heart set on a rig, honestly, you're better off buying from Musicians Friend, but GC is good in that you could probably try out whatever it is you're looking for because of their deep selection. I've bought new acoustic guitar and an electric bass from this location and both were solid deals. The used gear they sell is pretty interesting, too I've had to update this initial review to 3 stars. I find myself here quite a lot because it is a good store. This review is for Jerome G. He's a highly skilled luthier. He's worked on a mid sixties Gibson acoustic that was my great grandmothers. He's restored its sound. So warm and gentle...this guitar is a delight to hold and strum, whereas before it was unplayable. He cares deeply about his craft and it shows. Guitar Center is a fantastic place for all things music. Vintage guitar room, acoustic room, accessories, gently used gear, brass instruments, percussion, PA gear, and on and on and on. The service at this location is remarkable. I walked in and was instantly helped (even with a busy store). The worker spent a lot of time explaining which guitar is the best deal and teaching me a little bit about the basics. I ended up purchasing a Guitar and Ukulele. When I got home I tried to tune the guitar on my own and snapped one of the strings. I went back the next day and a completely different staff member fixed my string and tuned it for me for free! I was amazed. I was expecting them to charge me for labor and make me buy a new pack of strings but they gladly fixed everything free of charge. Since their renovations and new management team came on, shopping at GC, which at one time was such a nightmare, has become such a pleasant experience. I'm always able to find someone to help these days, the staff, especially some of the newer guys they brought in from other stores, really know their stuff. The selection of gear has improved a lot too. The platinum room has stuff for high rollers, but overall I feel there's a better selection and inventory. Today I came in looking for some guitar strings and to look at the guitar selection. Within 5 minutes I was asked very rudely and in a condescending manner if I needed help with something. I replied no since I knew what I wanted and was then told that I have to hurry and get out the store then since "people were waiting". People in waiting being in quotations because there were no people waiting. Never the less I was speeding up and then overheard the employees speaking horribly of the customers inside the store saying they don't understand why people have to come in, that the store sells the same stuff online. Overall horrible experience and I left because I refuse to provide this store with my money when they can't be bothered to deal with me or anyone else. Save your time and money and shop from stores that care about what they sell and the people that shop there. read more

Horrible. Terrible service. Worst music store experience ever. 10 years ago I put an amplifier in lay away. When I came in to pick it up, it had been sold to someone else. I stayed away for 10 years. On my first visit back in I saw a guitar and purchased it and was told I had to wait a week due to a police background check on the item. When I returned I was told that I was given the wrong pick up date and had to wait even longer. Unbelievably incompetent. Avoid Guitar Center. This is the 1st review I've ever done. I bought a guitar,amp,etc a couple months ago. Spent $640. Salesman was very friendly,and I was very pleased. I just retired and bought my 1st guitar. Read that I should get a setup. I live in Bay St Louis, 60 miles away,so I called the store. Was told I could use a $20 coupon when I came in. Next day I drive to store. Walk to counter, and salesman is working on a acoustic guitar on the counter. Said he needed the serial number. Had to open my case on the floor, people stepping around me, as he never moved his acoustic. Then he tells me I couldn't use my coupon because this was a "repair". Explained that a salesman the previous day, made the drive, but he could've not cared less. The $20 wasn't really a problem, but more of attitude. I'll find a small business guitar store to do business with, even though I will have to drive further. I'll never go back. Update. I was contacted by the manager.
