In the wee hours of the night, when you just can't fall asleep, have you ever wondered about the…read more word "crayon"? Sure you have, it's OK, you can admit it here - remember this is a safe environment and a judgement free zone. Well the word dates back to 1644 and is based on the French word for chalk, whicjh happens to be "craie". Ever wonder where some of America's earliest crayons were manufactured? Well, I found the answer on the Madison Historical marker. I bet you can guess the answer now. The marker is located on Boston Post Road between Academy Street and Island Avenue. Here you'll see a 2-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission, in the familiar white lettering on a blue background. The marker has the same text on both sides. The 1975 marker is in pretty good overall condition. One side is in great shape, with a fairly bright and unfaded blue background and white lettering. The other side is showing very early signs of decline with some fading on the white lettering and some discoloration on the blue background. The full text reads: This area, formerly part of Guilford and known as East Guilford, was first settled about 1650 on land bought from the Nehantic and Mohegan Indians in 1641. With population increasing, settlers here sought separate parishes and the Society of East Guilford was incorporated in 1707, the Society in North Madison, called North Bristol, in 1753. The Town of Madison, named for President James Madison, was incorporated in 1826. This was once a center for fishing, shipping, shipbuilding, farming, and crayon manufacturing. Famous people born here included Thomas Chittenden, first Governor of Vermont; philanthropist Daniel Hand; artist Gilbert Munger; and chief sponsor of the Civil War ironclad warship Monitor, Cornelius Scranton Bushnell. Erected by the Town of Madison and the Connecticut Historical Commission 1975 167 CT towns down, 3 to go

I am so pleased to have worked with College Planning Partnerships! Their experience, clarity, and…read moreexcellent tutors really made the difference for me and helped me achieve my desired score. Before, I struggled with pacing and understanding what the test was really looking for. However, the sessions I took helped create a step-by-step plan that I would follow for each section. The help I received was specific to my needs and weaknesses on the test. They did not teach the test as if there was a set formula to doing well. My tutors were very encouraging and motivating. Also, after each session, my tutors provided extensive feedback to myself and my parents on my performance during the session. This was invaluable information. They had more faith in my abilities than I did! I would highly recommend College Planning Partnerships to anyone in need of SAT or ACT prep.

Sam and Zac were incredibly helpful in preparing me for the SAT and I went into the test more confident than I ever had for standardized tests in the past. Initially I was skeptical about the online tutoring, but I quickly realized that it was an extremely useful tool. With the offices being almost an hour away, the online tutoring was very convenient for my family and me and it allowed for much more flexibility with planning. Even though it was online, I didn't feel like any part of the tutoring was lacking because the tutors were so engaged and all of the materials we would have used in person were right in front of me on my computer screen. These prep classes really helped to make the test seem much less intimidating and I became more relaxed and calm when taking the test as a result. I learned so many useful test-taking strategies and was able to manage my time much more effectively. After taking the SAT for the first time, my scores were much higher than my PSAT scores earlier this year, and critical reading, which had often been my weakest section in past standardized tests, became one of my strongest sections on the SAT. Thank you so much for all of your help!

Connecticut Experiential Learning Center (CELC), literally, takes my breath away…read more The opportunity for the students at CELC is amazing and the dynamics of the group of students is absolutely beautiful. CELC is what, I believe, every parent would want for their child: a bully free and truly challenging (individully titrated, another miracle for a school) learning environment. Melinda Alcosser and Maria Mortali are the two exceptional forces that lead the learning process at CELC: for kids in grades 5th through 8th. Why CELC for my family? Coming from a fantastic public school in Shaker Heights, Ohio, (Onaway elementary school) we moved to the shoreline of Connecticut into a school system with high ratings. The bullying was so unexpected and frightening. Worse, my child was "viewed" as the problem. We moved him to a private school (in the same community), and found the same dynamic continued to occur in this private school. He continued to be bullied and he fell through the cracks with regard to academics. My husband and I had a difficult time getting him to do his homework, and as a result, teachers disregarded his abilities and did not challenge him. We moved him to CELC in March of 2012. The second week he was there, on the way home he said, unprompted, "I love being there. It is like something was missing in my heart before, and now I am complete." Since moving to Connecticut two years ago, my son is finally happy. He loves going out the door in the morning to CELC, and he comes home at night and completes his homework!!!!! It is only believable, because I have seen it happen for my son. At CELC, he is not only accepted for who he is, he is valued. He is challenged. He is doing his homework. He is finally happy. That makes me and my husband happy. Connecticut Experiential Learning Center takes my breath away. A truly miraculous school program on the Connecticut shoreline.

The amazing, dedicated teachers have created a nurturing environment, where the students really get to know each other. As a result, they have created a unique space where kids feel comfortable to learn, grow, and to be curious. Students are advanced and challenged according to their abilities and interests in a small class environment where they stay engaged and connected. The school provides wonderful breadth of activities beyond the core academics, including twice a week field trips, a Kingian nonviolence class, music, theater, cooking, community service, student run work shops, and other enriching experiences. Our son loves going to CELC, and CELC has inspired him to learn and to be his best self there.
