We had just strolled from Plaza Mayor on a Monday afternoon at 4:30PM. It was completely packed like an indoor version of The Great Migration in really slow motion. We could hardly see any of the food much less be able to order anything or even less, find any place to eat it. Through the masses, I could tell it was a high-end gourmet hall, and apparently over thirty vendors do business here. I saw maybe two. Come at 10AM if you have any interest in trying the food here. The cacophonous late afternoon anarchy made us lose our appetites. If you think my assessment is unfair, I suggest you march off the cliff with the rest of the Instagram lemmings. This one's in Chueca, so it doesn't feel like it was in the thick of the tourist corridor. It sits on a quiet residential street just two minutes from the Chueca metro exit, in a neighborhood known for its independent character and social diversity. Compared with more traditional food halls, the market is modern, eco-friendly and definitely has a more global perspective when it comes to culinary options. Spread across three floors, the ground level functions as a traditional market with fresh produce and meats, while the first floor offers a wide variety of international bites in separate, non-identical tapas and fast-food stalls. The selection appears to have something for everyone tortillas and croquetas, fried seafood, Valencian paella, fresh sushi, traditional charcuterie, American-style burgers, a bevy of Middle Eastern baklava. The top floor features a stylish rooftop restaurant dominated by a terrace lounge. This floor is open to 1:30AM on weekends when it becomes quite the popular social hub for locals and tourists alike. There are also some great tapas bars and a lot of empanadas places. There's even a Korean grocery stand inside! It was difficult to decide where to eat, but in the end, I opted for a simple chicken empanada. The venders didn't speak any English, but I managed to order just fine with my knowledge of the word "pollo". The empanada was really big, and it was only €2. It was located in the back of the market where there is a group of a ton of empanada stands, each with a long line. They also have Venezuelan, Bolivian, Argentinian, and many other types of empanadas in the market! I definitely enjoy this market more than the overpriced San Miguel market!

During our visit to Madrid we went to the Mercado de Valle Hermoso and had one at Mila&Co and let me tell you it was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!! Sure, you can have good Veal Milanese in many places nowadays (and I'll even admit that I make a pretty fantastic one myself at home), buuuut what makes this place stand out are the toppings. We ordered the "Cremosa" topped with melted brie cheese, nuts and a sweet honey glaze and it was soooo good. You've just gotta try it! I'm already dreaming of going back to Madrid to have a taste of the "Del Bosque" which sounds incredibly promising with melted Emmental and mozzarella, sautéed mushrooms and truffle oil. There were plenty of bocadillos and tapas on at least three floors here. We had an opportunity to browse at most of the offerings through windows. We finally decided on this one place that served delicious ceviche and beer. This place does slow down after two o'clock but they were warming up to open after about 4pm. It is well within walking distance of the Puerta del Sol and Atocha Train Station. One of the many food markets that Central Madrid has to offer and great offerings for all types of tastes.

For friendliness, the vendors we talked to were top notch. The layout of the market is ideal for browsing and taking your time. There was none of that chaos you find at the more touristy markets. A few restaurants too, notably the famous "Casa Dani" is located here, most recently made popular (to non-local foodies) by Netflix's "Somebody Feed Phil". I arrived on a Monday morning around 10:30am so the atmosphere was pretty low key with mostly locals picking up groceries, grabbing a bite to eat, with a couple local tour guides bringing around 1-2 tourists on personalized tours.
