Madrid is filled to the brim with markets to visit, but this one strikes just the right balance. In…read morethe heart of Lavapies, you expect that the market will reflect the diversity of the area without feeling overdone, and it does a great job. There are a good variety of stalls with different types of food and drink, though I'd love to see more of the variety that the neighborhood itself has. Of what there is, though, the prices are generally great and the atmosphere is really fun (at least on Sundays, when I go). My friends and I are sidra-lovers, so the Asturian stall right in the middle is a favorite of ours, and they have great sidra-and-food deals. Bond 40 was our pick for last Sunday after seeing their 2 spritzes for 9€ deal; the patatas bravas were (surprisingly) actually a bit spicy, a big plus for this American.

Visited: 09.04.2026…read more We stopped by Mercado de San Fernando for a quick bite after landing in Madrid, so we were all still pretty jetlagged. It was only a few minutes' walk from our hotel, which was nice, although it was absolutely sweltering. We got there around 5:30ish, and most of the stalls were still closed. There were already plenty of people eating and drinking, though, so it still had a lively atmosphere. We walked around trying to find a spot and eventually made our way toward the back because I just wanted something simple to eat with a tinto de verano. Most of the stalls didn't speak English, so we had to navigate our way through with our broken Spanglish. It made things a little more challenging, but we managed! Overall, we had a good time. It was a convenient stop after a long flight, especially with the market being so close to our hotel. Just be prepared for the heat, and don't expect every stall to be open if you arrive around that time.

Really enjoyed Mercado de San Miguel, even if it's the more touristy food market in Madrid. Came…read morelater in the evening. Must gets include - jamón ibérico from Puesto Carrasco Ibéricos - olives and vermut from The Hour of the Vermouth - wine from Pinkleton & Wine - codfish from La Casa del Bacalao There's also a Spanish omelet vendor but it was okay. Great energy in the market. Can be difficult to find a seat at a table but there's plenty of standing counters along the perimeter.

We had just strolled from Plaza Mayor on a Monday afternoon at 4:30PM. It was completely packed like an indoor version of The Great Migration in really slow motion. We could hardly see any of the food much less be able to order anything or even less, find any place to eat it. Through the masses, I could tell it was a high-end gourmet hall, and apparently over thirty vendors do business here. I saw maybe two. Come at 10AM if you have any interest in trying the food here. The cacophonous late afternoon anarchy made us lose our appetites. If you think my assessment is unfair, I suggest you march off the cliff with the rest of the Instagram lemmings.
