Dr GUELICH is my new (Ortho) doctor. I was seeing a Rheumatologist in Indiana and Dr GUELICH had a complete X-ray and confirmed what the Rheumatologist told me and that I was riddled with arthritis throughout my entire body (my L knee was bothering me the most) and although he OK'D a cortisone shot this time, he wants to try a different kind of shot next time that would last longer (I forgot the name of the medication ) but he confirmed what the Rheumatologist told me that eventually I will need a complete knee replacement. I found Dr GUELICH and his staff caring, kind and supportive. I will be a returning patient. read more

My son needed surgery to repair a torn Labrum. As a dad, obviously I want the best for my boy even if I don't know what a Labrum is........... You will not find a better doctor or person for that matter, than Dr. Guelich. Excellent explanation skills. Excellent communication skills for both the teenage boy AND his dad. Excellent follow-up. Excellent post surgery examinations, explanations and coaching. Most important, an excellent surgeon. My son is 4 months into the rehabilitation, and everything is perfect! Dr. Guelich... Where do I start? I don't doubt his competence. I am sure he knows what he is talking about. My entire review is based on the level of "customer service" I experienced. Really there are three primary issues I have: 1. Dr. Guelich is kinda a jerk. Charming at first but when I asked about how I can confirm my insurance will cover the knee scope, it triggered a negative reaction. Sure, I get it, he has a ton of patients and I'm sure he gets asked for help in verifying insurance all the time. It's obvious he is sick of that question. He was borderline angry when I was inquiring about the subject. I'm sorry, I'm not as informed as you are doc. His answer was "Go figure it out yourself. I'll give you the codes. Do you have any idea how many patients I have?!?!" His anger is tied to another point I will list below. 2. His assistant! Smug and "too busy" for you. My interactions with her were very negative. I'll admit my attitude was equally as bad. She's never able to answer her phone, and when you do speak to her there is not a very friendly vibe. She seems to have a sense of entitlement. I'm not kidding, the next comment I make is extremely speculative but it almost seems they are most likely dating. You ever work with two people that are dating and one of them is in a position of power? How does the other person act? That's the sense I get. She essentially hung up on me the last time we spoke. I think her job security will never be an issue and she knows it. 3. Quantity over quality. I think most of the negative vibe I sense from both Dr. Guelich and his assistant probably stems from the fact they are waaaaay overbooked. Perhaps that is just a Chicago thing. Anytime you walk in there, the waiting room is jam packed with people. I'd imagine they have so may patients that it becomes very frustrating for them to juggle everything. That was what sparked Dr. Guelich's anger when I asked him if they could help me verify my insurance. That question triggered pent up frustration on his part. His assistant is also most likely in the same boat. Long story short, if you want to go to a doctor who makes you feel they truly care about you and are willing to take the time to address any of your concerns as a customer / patient, this is not the place to go. Maybe I'm naïve and what I'm looking for no longer exists. One thing is for sure, this review won't impact Dr. Guelich and his assistant. They have a steady stream of applicants and surely I've been replaced with the next person up. However, if I've helped one person avoid the interactions I had working with them, the review was worth it. read more

This guy deserves zero stars. I fell and tore my hamstring. At first I tried to tough it out. After a few days the back of my thigh started turning black and blue and then turned totally black over the whole hamstring area. Dr Guelich was recommended by my primary care dr. I echo everything mark w wrote in his review. It's nothing but a factory there and when Guelich saw me I felt he was totally dismissive of me because I wasn't an athlete. He was most excited when I showed him the iPhone pic of my black leg (it was looking better when I saw him). He said he could use it for his lectures. Then he said he was kidding but I don't think he was. He told me an MRI wouldn't tell him anything useful and when I asked about the pain which wasn't abating he said it's an 8 week injury for an NFL player and I wasn't going to do better than that. Then he said I should get physical therapy and to come back in a month. When I asked if it might be avulsed (torn away from the bone) he said no. Not probably not, but no. So I went to Rush the next day. Actually after reading mark's review, I made the appt even before I went to Guelich just in case I wanted a second opinion. They were so professional. They ordered an MRI which showed a total avulsion of my hamstring and told me I needed surgery ASAP or I'd risk permanent damage. The next day they operated to reattach my hamstring to my pelvis. Had I listened to Guelich I'd have a lifetime of pain. Do yourself a favor and do not go to Guelich or this clinic. They are negligent and incompetent. read more

Marathon career = no more. I've never been to a doctor's office and felt so much like a number. Post surgery I was lucky if he spent two minutes in the room with me when I always had to wait at least half an hour for him. . Also, its been a year, and I still have pain in my ankle worse than before the surgery, with more swelling. After surgery he was happy to say he found my tendon did not need to be repaired, and just the bone needed to be fixed. NOT good. Fixing the tendon was half the reason I had surgery, so it means he misdiagnosed me prior to surgery. I was told I would be running again in 90 days, and I have been unable to run more than 2 miles at a time without extreme pain. I USED to run marathons, and now my career is over unless somehow I can find another doc to fix what he did. One more thing, he DID NOT recommend physical therapy post surgery. I saw two other docs after him, and they both were quite surprised that he didn't do this. The nurse in his office was even surprised that he didn't recommend this when she was in an appt with me. When I finally got fed up with his treatment and decided to confront him, it was past 90 days, and my insurance charges me $100 to see a specialist. He wouldn't see me again unless I paid another visit. I can't recommend this doctor for ANYTHING, and am VERY dissatisfied with his performance pre/post op, and bed side manner. I felt that he only wanted to operate on me and make some $$$. read more

Do not understand how there can be people who speak bad things of this doctor. He treated me because I had an accident in my ankle and everything was incredible. I'm from Mexico and had just come to live in Chicago and I hurt my ankle and no one wanted to attend me because they asked me wait on a referral from a physician that I did not have at that time. A friend happened to me contact Dr. Pedro Iturbide who besides being a great Dr. is a great person. He works with Dr. Guelich, and it was through this that I meet Dr. Guelich. I had the best care of each of the members of the office, they are not only professional and friendly but they are great human beings. 100% recommend him and his team. read more

Dr Guelich has been treating my shoulder injury. He and his team were efficient and knowledgeable. Stacy, his PA, was very helpful in coordinating my care and physical therapy. I had to bring my 3.5 year old son with to my original appointment. Dr Guelich was so kind to him and took the time to explain what he was doing during the exam because my son was afraid Dr Guelich was going to "break mommy's arm." The patience and gentleness he showed my son were remarkable. I would highly recommend Dr Guelich. read more

Dr. Guelich is quite simply a ROCKSTAR doctor. I've had terrible knee issues since I was a kid, now in my 40's they have become unbearable. Dr. Guelich took the time and interest to properly address my ortho issues. I've had several doctors in the past who wrote off my pain as arthritis and gave me little hope- just painkillers. Dr. Guelich is extremely through and knowledgeable. I recommend him highly to anyone who has orthopedic issues. Keep in mind that his office holds many doctors and it can get very busy in there. That's not what I care about... I want a GREAT doctor, and that's what I got. I am now looking forward to having full use of my legs back and more importantly keeping up my rigorous workout schedule. read more

Dr Guelich has worked on my elbow tendon exercise injury( epicondylitis) and he and his PA Stacy are both great . They are super nice and very knowledgeable and professional . I liked them so much I referred 3 of my friends there and they were all very happy with their care . They have 2 offices and both were great. Their staff is very nice and responsive . read more

I completely disagree with these reviews. I find Dr. Guelich to be the best sports medicine doctor I have been too. I have had quite extensive knee injuries. He is not the type to immediately recommend surgery like many other surgeons do. He has spent so much time with me discussing options, the pros and cons of each, and answering my million questions. He really listened to my actual symptoms and not just the clinical exam, x-rays, and MRI. Great doctor! read more

I was referred to Dr Guelich by the excellent PT, Paul Schroeder, of Accelerated/Athletico to assess a SLAP tear in my shoulder, which possibly needed surgery. It did, and Dr Guelich also suggested I had a distal bicep as part of the procedure to avoid future problems. As I write this, 6 weeks post surgery, my shoulder is much better, although the healing process for this joint takes a long time, so I need to be patient. From the initial consultations, through to pre-surgery, surgery itself and post-op I have been delighted by all aspects of the care and service. He and his are very professional and I would recommend them to anyone needing assistance in his areas of specialization. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Guelich for the past 2 months for an Achilles Tendon rupture and have had a great experience. He was able to get me in to his office the morning after my injury and took the time during my initial visit to answer any and all of my questions. Surgery was scheduled quickly and my recovery has been tremendous as he allowed me to go for an aggressive Physical Therapy course. Not to mention, my scar is impeccable for an Achilles scar. I hear horror stories of people having anywhere from 3" - 12" jagged scars from this injury and mine is 1" and straight. During follow up visits he did spend little time with me, but my leg was fine and healing well. He's kind and great orthopedic surgeon; if you want someone to hold your hand, bring a friend. read more

I have had a great experience with Dr. Guelich. His office was able to get me in within days of my MRI. He confirmed the torn ACL that the ski resort Dr. had diagnosed and could have gotten me in for surgery in only a couple of weeks. I decided to wait as I was told by multiple folks that the stronger your quadriceps, the easier the recover is. I was not in much pain, just unstable, so I continued by spin class (albeit with no jumps) prior to the surgery. In fact 3 people in my spin class have had favorable experiences with Dr. Guelich, not just on knees, but also shoulders. The team he worked with at Presence/ St. Joes were awesome, especially the PT's at 1525 W. Belmont. The communication between the PT's and Dr. Guelich seemed to be seamless and they had me back to normal and no more PT within 3 months. As long as I'm careful, I expect to be skiing again next year. Sure, his office is very busy and he always seemed to have an entourage of PT's and Dr's in training. I appreciated the efficiency, although some of the newbies could learn to listen better when they take notes for the Dr. (If they ask how are you and you say, "great, no pain whatsoever." The next question in front of the computer should not be, "so are you in any pain?") Also, in terms of constructive criticism: the reception team could be a little more sensitive: people on crutches could use some help with their backpacks... Overall, no complaints. read more

The short story: GO ELSEWHERE! You will NOT matter to them as a patient, there is zero follow up, consideration, or responsibility taken by the staff. The novel: I waited an HOUR & they were surprised I was still waiting. The assistant appeared & confessed she had placed my file under a stack of papers & had forgotten about me. Fantastic. After a consultation, I could hear her talking to Dr. Guelich. She briefly described my knee problems & resulting strains: "Her left knee, then right, now hamstring & groin. She ran the marathon, blah blah blah." The "Blah blah blah" is actually part of what she said. The doctor entered & asked, "So this was your first marathon?" I replied that it was my ninth. He was visibly taken aback. He had clearly assumed I was overreacting about the pains, thinking I didn't understand the strains of running a marathon. Regardless, I should not have been made to feel as though I'm not connected with my body. He was friendly enough, gave a quick exam, & referred me to PT. As I left, he apologized for the wait stating, "I love teachers, you're some of the nicest people. My mother was a special ed teacher in Utah, and let me tell you, there are a lot of special ed kids out there." How is that in any way an appropriate thing to say? Leaving the office I was told someone would call me within 48 hours with the next steps I needed to complete. One WEEK later, I'd heard nothing. I called & spoke with Shannon Lund, who stated that it had not gone through. I asked about the 48 hour notice & the fact that there had been zero follow up. Her response? "Oh, it NEVER takes 48 hours!" So why was I told 48 hours? "Sometimes it's 48 hours." Ok, which is it? I understand certain things are out of her control, but they need to learn how to manage expectations & communicate with patients, like a 30 second message with updates. Her tone and curtness clearly communicated her attitude, & that I was not a priority. Miracle of miracles, the next morning I received a message that the referral had gone through. What a coincidence! I called & was informed that this is not correct. I needed to call directly to the PT office first. The office informed me that the referral was NOT showing on my file. They cautioned me that this needed to be in order prior to my appt. I contacted the office manager at Chicago Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. My conversation was good; she seemed upset that I'd had such experiences, & instilled short-lived confidence in me that things would be taken care of. Shannon was placed back on & again her tone was abysmal. I asked her to email the referral so I could make certain things are taken care of. I'm glad I asked. Somehow, a PCP I've never met & an office I've never entered were listed. I have an HMO; I get the hoops I need to jump through. When I successfully clear the proverbial hoops, though, I deserve professional medical attention and I should not need to call incessantly to remind them the steps of their jobs. I called the manager again to inform her of this mistake. She was "aghast" & I spoke with Shannon, both by email, & on the phone, & she assured me she would find out who could fix this. I was referred to my PCP's office to make the change. I called the primary's office- nope- the specialist is making the referral to the PT, so they need to make the change. I called back. They again insisted they would rectify the situation. I had a month until my PT appointment at this time. I waited that month: from 21 Nov-16 Dec. I emailed Shannon again asking for professionalism & assistance. Crickets. I called Dr. Guelich's office & asked for the office manager. I was told she was running payroll & that "HAD to get done." I replied that I had been waiting for a MONTH for communication regarding a referral for an appointment now in two days' time. Shannon was put back on the phone & had instant attitude. I have never been spoken to in this manner before when supposedly dealing with a professional, & if this is how they run their practice, then I feel for the poor souls who remain their patients. We had a heated exchange & I begged her to do her job. I am sorely disappointed & this office should be hanging its head in shame. read more

Dr. Guelich and his staff have been fantastic since I started with them 2 years ago. I'm a 34 year old athlete that's had knee trouble all my life. I've had corrective surgeries in the past, but my knees still never felt right even for just regular activity. With Dr. Guelich I now most recently had a major operation done on my knee that has been a complete success. My knee for the first time ever feels sturdy like it should (and I didn't need a replacement or anything like that). I will be getting my other knee done the same way next chance I get. Dr. Guelich's a personable, caring person, and he is the most up to date surgeon I've ever come across, which is why he's been able to treat a condition I have that I never thought could be fixed. The office staff is organized as well. I've had about 20 visits with them and they are usually right on time. Their follow up is excellent as well. You'll be in good hands with Dr. Guelich...I can't say enough good things...good luck! read more
