I've taken rings to be re-sized or have a diamond replaced in past years here. This visit I wanted my husband's wedding band to be resized to fit me a week after he passed. It was very busy when I walked in but I was greeted and told somebody would be with me shortly. One woman offered her help and realized she needed Denny to look at the band before she could quote a price, but he was at lunch. She called him to see when he'd be returning. I was told 20 minutes. I needed to make a call so I told her I'd be happy to wait and would be outside. When Denny was back, I was still on the phone outside. The woman came out to find me to tell me he could help me. That was amazing. When I went in, she took me back to the workroom where Denny was. I was not expecting that! He took a look and thought he might be able to compress the ring down to size rather than having to cut it and re-weld it. He said he could just do it while I was there. So we had a lovely conversation while he worked on the ring and tried it on me to test the size. He polished it up and then cleaned my own wedding ring to make it shine as well. The price to do that was very reasonable and a fraction of the cost I'd been told over the phone at another place. It was a bright spot in my day and week of an otherwise sad time. The regular bi-weekly Thursday night auctions, as well as the scheduled estate sales, always have a rollicking mix of items.... all jumbled together. A Chippendale chair might be auctioned just before or just after a pair of old golf shoes. You just never know! I'll bet there's not a lot that the Masseys haven't sold over the years! With the recent scandals at Ivey-Selkirk, it's hard to find a good auction house in the area, but the Masseys are doing a great job of picking up the slack without taking the fun out of their jobs. They like the upscale estates, but aren't averse to selling old farm equipment or store liquidations, either -- they just good-naturedly tackle the job at hand, and put on a really good show while doing so. The audiences are a hoot, too. You see a LOT of local antique dealers looking for bargains, lots of toothless Fagin types and hairy ZZ Top wannabes, and everything in between. Doesn't matter who you are or what you look like, though, because the Masseys like everyone, whether you're a bargain-hunter, an antique dealer, or an upscale collector, and they make it a point to entertain. Even if you aren't buying anything, it's fun just to watch the sale! That said, I've gotten a lot of magnificent pieces of furniture at Massey Auctions; some of it just reasonable and some of it for a song. I've also gotten caught up in the fun and gone home with a few nonsensical impulse buys, but that's one of the hazards of going. Don't go to one of the Thursday night auctions expecting Sotheby's. These are rapid-turnaround events held at the Maplewood American Legion Hall ... but just because the venue isn't tony doesn't mean there's nothing good for sale! The Masseys are honest, too, so if something is a reproduction, they will say so right from the outset, or if they aren't sure of the provenance of an item, they'll tell you that too. Come prepared, because the sales are cash- or check-only. You should go! You'll have a great time!

Although they did a good job organizing and prepping for the sale, they were very difficult to deal with - moody and "pissy". Worst of all, instead of meeting with my wife and I to discuss how the auction went and explain why they sold all of our stuff for next to nothing, they left a check for the negligible amount on my doorstep. When I tried to teach them to ask what happened, they would not return my calls!!! If they had returned my call and provided me with an explanation, I would have probably given them 3 stars in this review. The fact that they didn't is inexcusable. Do not use these guys.

I asked if they'd shipped the wrong one; and was told online auctions don't allow returns, and I'd had plenty of time to cross-examine them earlier, but had missed my chance. Which is quite true, legally speaking. Hence my review: they're slimy. And also not very bright, since it would have been smarter for them in the long run to recruit a loyal customer. "Big mistake. Big. HUGE.... I have to go shopping now."

In a market where properties were going under contract the day they were listed, the seller stated she had only had 5 showings including us in over 30 days. It's no wonder, when her realtor wouldn't respond to realtors trying to contact him. I could understand if it was just one call not returned. This was the entire 30 day process! My sister was ultimately able to close on the property but it was absolutely no thanks to Darrell. Maybe he should stick to listing properties closer to where his office is located.
